Uncertainty is measured in lies. From award-winning author D. Fischer, arrives the highly anticipated Howl for the Damned, a series for fans of Mercy Thompson, Bitten, and Alpha and Omega.Balancing loyalties and desires isn’t easy, but Jinx Whitethorn is determined to try. She finally understands what she is and the secrets that bind her fate, but she still has questions. Jinx turns to the only … turns to the only living relative she has left on her father’s side. It goes against every tribe fable Kaya Whitethorn had been told as a child, but she agrees to help her skinwalker niece.
Possessing both a combination of shaman and witch magic, Jinx needs to learn how to control her power to defend the people she loves, and her father’s pendant. A pendant that harnesses the wolf souls of the cursed Bane Pack shifters.
Meanwhile, Jacob looks into a mole inside the pack. Someone’s feeding the Bane information, and he’s determined to find the traitor among them. He’ll protect the woman he loves, no matter the cost.

The Liar Among Creatures (Howl for the Damed: Book Two) (Howl for the Damned 2) by D. Fischer is a very awesome story that I have had the privilege to read. This is book number two in this awesome series and I am so hooked I can barely wait to read book number three. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about witch magic and wolf shifters.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
Each person is unique. In a society that stresses normal, do you accept yourself for your differences or try to blend in? Embrace all that is different and dive in to this wonderful trilogy!
Jinx has never really felt that she belonged anywhere. As a witch without magic she was an outcast in her coven. Now living amongst the shifters, being protected by them, can she find a home at last? Or are there too many unanswered questions still, about who Jinx really is?
Meeting her aunt, trying to train and be in control of her skinwalking ability should make it possible to defend herself against the Bane? But can Jinx learn to trust? In herself, her family, and the pack?
Jinx has powers she didn’t realize she could control until recently. She also has secrets she isn’t ready to reveal, not even to Jacob, the alpha shifter of the pack who is slowly accepting her into their family. Both of them find themselves in a relationship they can’t fight but don’t have time for as they wrestle with the danger threatening the pack the closer they move toward the answers they each seek. Working together isn’t always easy. Finding the one who is feeding the Bane pack their secrets is the most difficult of all. When the truth comes out, it could tear their world wide open.
This story keeps taking us deeper into not only the world this author has built but an understanding of the creatures she has created and the Native American folklore many of us know so little about. She combines fantasy, paranormal, and Native American history to bring us something wholly unique and exciting. I cannot wait for the next story in the series.
I have to comment on the cover for this book as I think it fits it so well. I love the continuity of the howling wolf on the cover and the fact it is kind of see through perhaps representing the animal that Jinx turns into. Then there is the forest background that features within the book as it is in the grounds of the home of the Riva Pack. These covers represent the books extremely well and certainly do their job very well, as I would certainly pick them up in a book store to learn more about them.
Now it’s kind of difficult to speak about Jinx and not reveal what she is in this book, so if you haven’t read book one you may want to stop reading here! So the identity of Jinx’ father is now known and the Riva pack is searching for his relatives in the hope there will be someone to help Jinx understand, handle and control her transitions into her spirit animal, which happens to be a stunning white wolf, that Alpha Jacob’s wolf is rapidly falling in lust and love with.
A relative is found and it turns out she is Jinx’ father Adriel’s sister, Kaya. As it is still considered dangerous because the Bane wolves are still wanting to capture Jinx to force her to remove their curse, Jacob’s second in command Rex collects Kaya and brings her into the home of the Riva Pack.
Kaya reveals more details about Adriel to Jinx and also has regular training sessions with Jinx to help her control her changing more whilst remaining conscious.
Sadly, when secrets about the whereabouts and movements on pack land appear to be leaked it seems like Jacob has a traitor in the camp. Whilst Kaya demands all of her niece’s attention, pitting her against Damien, one of the toughest wolves in the pack, and really pushing Jinx to her limits. Later whilst on guard duty patrolling the Riva Pack home Damien is attacked, meaning there definitely is someone leaking pack information to outsiders, but how did these outsiders get on pack land evading detection long enough to attack Damien one of the strongest pack members both in and out of his wolf form? It is revealed that the sensation and sounds that Jinx feels/hears from the wolf pendant she has that belonged to her father are the voices of the Bane Pack wolves, but what did the Bane pack do that made Adriel remove their wolves and trap them in the pendant? And could anyone other than Adriel or his daughter remove the curse, and free the wolves?
My favourite characters in this book were once again Jinx and Jacob and their cute, but passionate relationship. I love the way Jacob wants to give Jinx the option to walk away after they sort out the “Bane Pack problem” as it is referred to. Jacob has felt the mate bond pull strongly, but as Jinx is fairly new to wolf pack customs, he forces himself to hold back, which in turn worries Jinx that Jacob doesn’t want her as she is not a usual wolf shifter, more of a spirit wolf shifter.
Both Jacob and Jinx want “more”, “now” from each other but neither thinks the other wants to commit. It’s a classic misunderstanding of unsaid words and unrevealed feelings, though it is obvious for everyone around them that they are quite literally made for each other, like two halves of a coin.
The other relationship that’s “going strongly” in this book is the one between Sara, Jinx best friend from the Lotus Coven, who is usually the perfect witch example of “love them & leave them” is living at the Riva Pack home and is sleeping with Cinderson, Riva Wolf and owner of BeDeviled also a “love them & leave them” type. However, the two of them together seems to becoming a regular. In fact, there’s an embarrassing scene for Jinx when she walks into Cinderson’s bedroom and see’s both him and her friend Sara naked in bed! Which is quite funny really as you would think that the whole nudity thing could be “old hat” to Jinx now she has been living with the Riva Wolf pack for such a long time.
I honestly slipped effortlessly back into this book with it great different types of paranormal characters I think it will appeal to a wide range of readers. At around three quarters of the way through the book I was like, Oh…wow I think I know who is giving the Bane pack information and help and they are quite literally in plain sight right under the noses of Jacob & Jinx……Was Damien attacked because of his similar wolf colouring to Jacob? And was it the mole/traitor that attacked him alone or did they have Bane pack help? Why did Adriel curse the Bane pack? Could it be something to do with his sister?” As you can tell I had lots of questions popping up in my head as I was reading The Liar Among Creatures. I love a book that keeps you thinking and asking questions. As well as the well thought out, skilfully created characters and the amazing action depicted within the book, there are detailed descriptions of the surrounding woods, as well as the inside of the pack home that make the scenery easy to imagine.
My immediate thoughts upon finishing this book were Oh wow! Amazing! It felt great that I had guessed the mole/traitor too, even though at one point in the book I felt like shouting who it was at the characters lol. I was also left with even more questions, that may or may not be answered in the next book, such as, Does Jinx’ mum have any more information on the situation between the Bane pack and Adriel that may help? When will things settle down long enough for Jinx & Jacob to start/complete their mate bond? Will there be a future for Cinder & Sara’s relationship too with him shifter & her a witch? (I really hope so, and she doesn’t seem the type to be forced away from someone she may love by rules, no matter how ancient they are!) Also are the Bane pack still coming after Jinx? I want to read mooore noooow!
So, to sum up. . Amaaaazing, action packed, loads of potential for future books! Definitely looking forward to more!
This was a super fantastic read. It continues on from Book 1 with more about Jinx and Jacob. Like the first book, the characters are well developed and interesting. The story continues to develop them further and it is really good to see them grow. I am very much looking foreword to reading the next in the series!
Author D. Fischer has done it again! Book Two hooks you from the beginning then takes you on an adventure full of drama, betrayals, twists and turns and ends on a note that leaves you yearning for book three to be released already! (not a cliffhanger though – thank goodness!!) I devoured every word of this book like the first in the series. The authors writing style is so beautiful – it’s like I am right there with Jinx, seeing what she is seeing, feeling what she is feeling… I cannot wait to see what Book Three brings to the table!!
Fast paced read filled with all the tension! Jinx and Jacob are both still dealing with A LOT of baggage from their past – and learning how to move forward. For a middle book in a series, it did a good job of character building and adding to the larger story arc while keeping the action going. The first book was all about reveals and Jinx learning what she is. This book looked further into who she is and and how she fits into a larger story she didn’t even know existed.
This is book 2 in the series and needs to be read after book 1 as the books build on each other. It doesn’t end on a cliff hanger – but there are some pretty big reveals at the end that will leave you eager for book 3!
Whoooo boy! Things are getting complicated between Jinx and Jacob. Kaya is suspected of hiding something. I really love the intricacies of the inter relationships of the pack, it is so fascinating! I loved reading this and can’t wait to read the next book!
Another amazing edition to the marvelous world D. Fisher has created for us. The Bane seem to be playing cat an mouse with Jinks. The pack is warming up to Jinks, and so is Jacob. Jinks looks deeper into her skinwalker roots and someone is betraying the pack.
4.75 stars
What a book! The second in the Howl for the Damned series, Ms. Fischer has unleashed some whoop a** and lit a fire under these characters. This is one high octane, intense read with betrayal, drama and twists and turns that readers will not see coming. Everyone is being put through their paces and the only question that remains is who will remain standing when the dust clears? Once again, the author has painted a vivid description of Jinx’s world that will have you enthralled from beginning to end.
Book 2 does not disappoint except that it left me dying for book 3. LOL We still have all the same great characters and we get a little more depth for each of them. We get to see the growth of our main characters and how they will help each other and change each other. There are great emotional concepts about love and loss and change and growth and even family. This one also flows at a steady pace and while I saw the twist coming, I think the delivery was beautifully done. I truly can’t wait for book 3 and to see where the story takes us!
This the book 2 for Howl for the Damned-The Liar Among Creatures.
The characters are fantastic now quite well established.
Jinx the main character now knows what she is and what is her destiny .
Getting to where she learns about herself is what makes the book more interesting and exciting.
She knows she is in love with Jacob ,where will that take her….
Jacob is in love with Jinx and he will protect her not matter what.
Jacob and the pack know they have a mole in there pack.
Jinx meets her only relative and asks for her help but can this person be trusted.
All this and more with mystery , fights , twists and turns .
This book is better than the first and a must read you will not be disappointed.
„The Liar Among Creatures“, the second book in the “Howl for the Damned” Series by D. Fischer, is a wonderful blend of fast-paced action, romantic elements, intense characters and a thoroughly enjoyable urban fantasy plot.
The plot explores the relationship between Jinx and Jacob and shows the ups and down of navigating their chemistry while taking care of their personal problems. Jinx finally discovers what it is “wrong” with her as she seeks the help of her aunt, the only surviving relative of her father’s. And so, she discovers the rare mix of shaman and witch magic that makes her unique. The discovery also unearths the powers of her father’s pendant and forces her to take some serious decisions about how and if to use these powers going forward.
In the meantime, Jacob keeps busy trying to find the traitor in his pack, the one who keeps informing Bane on his plans and putting not only the pack, but also Jinx’s life in danger. The situation explodes into a never-ending trail of hard-core action and tribulations that barely let the reader catch a breath before the next thrill comes blasting around the corner.
D. Fischer is a born storyteller that captivates the reader with a mix of unexpected twists, a very good plot and incredible high-quality writing. Her characters, despite being part of an urban fantasy setting are fully credible and feel familiar and real at all times, turning the plot into an adventure the reader takes part on.
It’s a fantastic book with a slight downside… it ends… can you believe it? it ends… but despair not my friend…. as Jinx, Jacob and the pack will be back in book 3…
I can hardly wait
An absolutely amazing follow up to book one and I’m patiently waiting for book 3. D. Fischer is an amazing author and I love her writing. It this book you learn more about Jinx and Jacob, how they have found each other even with all the craziness in there lives.
