The Letter is a book with characters that live between the covers of the book and if you are like me; their stories ever since I “closed” the book.
Such a fabulous story. I couldn’t stop reading!
I loved this book. It is both a love story and a mystery, one of my favorite combinations! The plot alternates between the WW2 era and the 1970’s, linked by a letter that the protagonist finds in a suit pocket in the thrift store where she works. It grabbed me from the start and I read it in a couple evenings. Very satisfying and uplifting.
A wonderful page turning read! Life is just full of surprises.
I enjoyed the unique characters in this story. They each had their own story to tell and the plot came together in an interesting way. I thought it was one of the best books I’ve read.
Equal to THE NOTEBOOK, and better than most of Sparks. Awesome! Spellbinding and unpredictable. I especially enjoyed the Brit and Irish venacular, description of Manchester and southern Ireland, insight into war-time and convent life…okay, I loved everything about THE LETTER!
Nice story of new chances after an abusive marriage and a peek into the past.
This book was tough to get into because the author quickly introduced multiple stories in multiple time periods. Once I finally sorted out who was who, the book was much more meaningful. From an autocratic father in England 1939 to a drunken abusive in 1973, the story had plenty of villains. But the underlying theme of romantic love and family …
I now have a new favorite author. Kathryn Hughes is fantastic. I read The Last Promise in a day and immediately looked for another book she had written and found her first The Letter. The characters are so real and I again could not stop reading. This is a marvelous story that three generations. Absolutely wonderful.
I loved this story. Even though the end was tragic and not a happy one. It was one I could not put down.
To me, it was a wonderful story, with sad, happy, loving. The old story of a young woman, who finds herself pregnant, and the effect is has on the whole family. I found myself cheering for her.
This is a book that keeps you captured and you can’t put it down.
An interesting story worked around a letter found in an abandoned suit. Certainly a realistic look at spousal abuse and timely, considering its look at Irish convents that handled unwed mothers. It held my attention and has convinced me to read more by K Hughes.
Wonderful story!
An easy read with a lot of twists and turns that all come together in the end. Liked this one so much, I hated to see it end.
Very heartful. Well written
Lovely story! When a book grabs your interest at the very start and keeps you captivated until the very end, you know you’ve just read a great book written by a gifted author! After being on a cycle of mostly lifeless books lately, I am once again encouraged that there are some gems to be found. If you like Nicholas Sparks, I think you’ll enjoy …
I read this for bookclub and found it somewhat predictable.
Story takes place in early 1970’s. A woman, Tina, abused by her jealous husband works at a thrift store and finds a letter dated 1940 in the pocket of a donated suit. The Letter is from a man, to a woman, apologizing and professing love and marriage. The letter was never mailed. Tina makes it her goal to deliver the letter to the woman it was …
