The unforgettable cross country journey of a runaway couple in their twilight years determined to meet the end of all roads on their own terms—a major motion picture from Sony Pictures Classics starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland. The Robinas have shared a wonderful life for more than sixty years. Now in their eighties, Ella suffers from cancer and John has Alzheimer’s. Yearning for one … for one last adventure, the self-proclaimed “down-on-their-luck geezers” kidnap themselves from the adult children and doctors who seem to run their lives and steal away from their home in suburban Detroit on a forbidden vacation of rediscovery.
With Ella as his vigilant copilot, John steers their ‘78 Leisure Seeker RV along the forgotten roads of Route 66 toward Disneyland in search of a past they’re having a damned hard time remembering. Yet Ella is determined to prove that, when it comes to life, you can go back for seconds—even when everyone says you can’t.
“The Leisure Seeker is pretty much like life itself: joyous, painful, moving, tragic, mysterious, and not to be missed.”—Booklist, starred review

LOVED the story.
I had a feeling that this was what the couple planned. But was so sad when at the end of their story they were able to carry out their plan to go out of this world on their own terms.
I thank God for the strength of life long love.
A wonderful older couple facing the end of their life
You reach a certain age when you start thinking about how much longer do I have on this earth. This book helps you reflect on your own life and especially your relationship with your significant other. You find yourself asking what are your most significant memories and might be a little surprised at what comes to mind. If you had a loved one with …
The ending was not what I expected at all. Heart-wreching and unforgetable. If you’ve experienced either situation in the book you will understand my meaning.
I was pleased to find this story and loved the surprise twists. Cute older couple.
Really eye opening about life , love and death….painful yet inspiring…
One last road trip for an elderly couple with health problems.
Part travel book, part love story “The Leisure Seeker” is an eye opener about end of life, the right to choose how to live and die and a travelogue that takes you on a journey along the old Route 66. I’ve always been curious about Route 66 so this drew me in. To see it through the eyes of two aging, sick people who decided to have one last …
Haven’t seen the movie, but from what I read about it, it changes the route taken by the couple in the book. I prefer the book, as usual.
I enjoyed reading because I can relate. My husband I retired, built a cabin in the Rockies and thought we’d really love it. Turns out after 12 years of maintaining two homes, one being in the high-altitude, we decided to sell the cabin. We were relieved of so much work. Soon we were bored again. We bought a Country Coach. We love to travel …
Beautifully written story – unexpected ending
Surprise ending
Terrible pro suicide story!!
The couple in this story are from my neighborhood in Michigan and they traveled through a lot of the country that my husband and I have gone through by car over the years. Even though they were older, I could relate to a lot of the story. It was sad and funny; overall, a lovely book.
It was very easy to read and definitely held your attention. It was a little bit predictable but this type of book usually is. It is also kind of thought provoking for individuals getting close to the age of the characters. Although a little sad, it is an enjoyable read
A fun read about an aging couple on their last hurrah! It ended as it should have.
I thought that this was a beautiful and realistic love story. Very nostalgic.
It was sad and pretty realistic story of what the older generation faces. The characters were well written.
