The unforgettable cross country journey of a runaway couple in their twilight years determined to meet the end of all roads on their own terms—a major motion picture from Sony Pictures Classics starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland. The Robinas have shared a wonderful life for more than sixty years. Now in their eighties, Ella suffers from cancer and John has Alzheimer’s. Yearning for one … for one last adventure, the self-proclaimed “down-on-their-luck geezers” kidnap themselves from the adult children and doctors who seem to run their lives and steal away from their home in suburban Detroit on a forbidden vacation of rediscovery.
With Ella as his vigilant copilot, John steers their ‘78 Leisure Seeker RV along the forgotten roads of Route 66 toward Disneyland in search of a past they’re having a damned hard time remembering. Yet Ella is determined to prove that, when it comes to life, you can go back for seconds—even when everyone says you can’t.

An elderly ailing couple go on one last road trip. Laugh out loud funny but also very real and very sad at times. Kinda like life. Highly recommend this one to any boomers who have been married awhile and are looking at growing old together. The male author by the way, did a wonderful job of telling the story from a woman’s point of view.
I enjoyed this book and had a lot of good laughs, but didn’t care for the ending. While the entire book was both simultaneously funny and sad, it was also touching in many ways. I understand why the author chose the particular ending, and in many ways the entire story could be heading in that general direction. I have too much empathy for the …
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Alternately crazy funny, and bittersweet love story. All aboard for this beautiful journey on the Leisure Seeker… you will be glad you did.
Wonderful ending for open minded readers! Really enjoyed!
This was awesome. Sad so many people have dementia this was a truly good book, sad ending, but it happens so often. One can not live with out the other after many years of being married.
I loved that the book was about the older generation couple and their adventure. Such a refreshing chance from 30-somethings! I read this book in one day – couldn’t put it down.
Many senior folks can readily identify with the couple who take off on a trip against the wishes of their children. Even when illness and age-related dementia cause some real problems, their adventure was still far superior to sitting out your last days in a locked facility (if you’ve visited a few of those “retirement places” you can feel locked …
Ella has terminal cancer and her husband of sixty years has Alzheimer’s disease. Against the wishes of family and doctors they go in their old RV on Route 66 from Michigan to California. The plot is great with an unexpected ending. There is quite a lot of profanity.
Loved all the Detroit references
Very thought provoking…..what would you do, how would you handle your end?
Bittersweet and poignant but also funny. A pretty accurate description of the aging process and how hard it is for families (both aging parents and the adult children who worry about them).
This is one of the best books for preparing the end of life quality you wish for. The characters and their old-age interactions were so true to life.
Thank you for a thought provoking read.
I loved this book, so relevant today.
The ending is expected however getting there is a very fun and heart warming account of a senior couple spending their last travel vacation together depite health issues.
I could relate to this story. My late husband had dimentia no I took care of him for several years.
I loved this book! The characters were close to home for those dealing with terminal illnesses.
I loved this book. It was a page turner for me, as I really needed to know how it turned out. I could not have predicted the ending, but I was somehow comforted by its conclusion.
Good but sad because it’s so realistically life sometimes but a great read
An excellent read for a more mature reader !
