Caution: Story contains strong profanity and descriptions of violent acts.
When a mutilated corpse is found bound to a tree deep in the forest of remote Aubrey Island, Washington, residents learn that the murder mirrors, in every ritualistic detail, a series of revenge killings described in a century-old local ghost story. More abductions and killings soon follow.
Justin Riddley, recently …
Justin Riddley, recently transferred to the island’s small college, faces growing evidence that one of his new friends and fellow students may be the murderer. John Marshall, redemption-seeking captain of the local police force, leads the frantic murder investigation and struggles to figure out whether the killings are tied to the island’s dark and violent past. Tormented by tragic wartime memories, and more convinced with each day that it is humanity’s fate to destroy itself, Marshall races against both the murderer and the specter of his own mental breakdown.
As blood continues to spill, Riddley and Marshall wonder whether there may be a dark, universal force that drives evil deeds great and small, and whether the nature of one’s childhood might sometimes, in the end, be all that separates the saint from the psychopath.

A bit dark, different from most of the books I have been reading. Nice atmosphere, I liked the characters. seemed reasonably well developed and loved the landscape. Evocative of stories told over campfires when I was a teenager.
Good book. Lots of foul language that’s not necessary. College pranks that made me laugh out loud!
Tight gripping plot, good character development and lots of originality.
Suspense worthy of Alfred Hitchcock.
For a while I couldn’t figure out which way the author wanted to go and it felt like he didn’t either. It’s like he started a story without a plot. It tried to meld a few genres poorly. Gaping plot holes and no resolutions. I found it a waste of my time.
I could not go but a few chapter in this book due to the violence.
I didn’t guess who done it, I like that.
I was able to really get into this book and fully enjoyed it. A very good read.
One Awesome book! Very different storyline. Kept me guessing right till the end.
Not a real interesting book. Moves slow.
A little too much philoso-babble, should have been a long novella instead of a novel, but it kept me engaged for the most part
The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was, I figured out the “who did it” and so did others who read it.
This was a smashing good read! About a handful of college students grow up around the story of Devils Creek Killer.
They are a group from all walks of life, some with happy childhood’s and some with sad. They bond in college and hang out going camping, fishing, and just being boys trying to grow into manhood, dealing life the best they can. They …
Not many books I don’t finish but this one bored the heck out of me. I gave up on it because it never reached what the story line was supposed to be.
Gory details of the murders. Didn’t really explain the connection between the old murders and the new murders. And, never did find out who did the original killings before this current bunch, since they were spread out over decades.
Wanted to think Justin was a small, shy kid because of his insecurities. Was hard to grasp that he was over six …
The friendship seems to outweigh the murders, which is fine. It is nice to see a group of college friends who bond naturally and the philosophy makes the reader want to join the discussion around the campfire.
sometimes you’re pulled into the philosophical discussions, that you forget this is a murder mystery. Good read with an unwanted and unexpected ending.
A page turner right to the end!
Very well written. A compelling read I highly recommend! (There’s some gore and foul language but it’s all part of the story and did not seem at all over-the-top to me within the plot)
Loved the characters and suspense.
