What would you give to live forever? Elijah Brighton wants to become an ascender—a post-Singularity human/machine hybrid—after all, they’re smarter, more enlightened, more compassionate, and above all, achingly beautiful. But Eli is a legacy human, preserved and cherished for his unaltered genetic code, just like the rainforest he paints. When a fugue state possesses him and creates great art, … great art, Eli miraculously lands a sponsor for the creative Olympics. If he could just master the fugue, he could take the gold and win the right to ascend, bringing everything he’s yearned for within reach… including his beautiful ascender patron. But once Eli arrives at the Games, he finds the ascenders are playing games of their own. Everything he knows about the ascenders and the legacies they keep starts to unravel… until he’s running for his life and wondering who he truly is.
The Legacy Human is the first in a philosophical HopePunk sci-fi series that explores the intersection of mind, body, and soul in a post-Singularity world.

Enjoyable sci-fi. have both ebook and audible versions.
I wish we could give half stars as well, I’d have given this story a 4 and a half. For me there was a little too much teen angst and teen crushing. But otherwise I loved it.
A little about myself I’m a woman in my mid 50s, and I really enjoyed this so I would not consider it just a young adult book.
The narration is great, Nick Podehl really brings the story to life. He differentiates between characters wonderfully.
This audiobook was given to me for free at my request from the publisher or author or narrator and I provided this voluntary review.
The Legacy Human (Singularity) was a good read by Susan Kaye Quinn. Elijah wants to become an ascender, which is a post-singularity human/machine hybrid. But Eli is a legacy human which means he’s preserved and cherished for his unaltered genetic code. Eli attends the creative Olympics but finds that the ascenders are playing a game of their own. This was a good read and I can’t wait to read more by the author.
Imagine entering the Olympics — for your creativity. This book takes a big twist on the idea of the super-talented. Elijah Brighton wants to become an ascender — a human/machine hybrid. But when he lands a sponsor for the creative Olympics, he begins to discover the world he knew is not at all what he imagined. Layers of secrets and duplicitous friends make this a book you can’t put down. I read it in one very long sitting and dragged the next day, but it was worth it. Great read.Susan Kaye Quinn
Elijah wants to become an ascender so he can save is mom and the only way he sees doing so is getting a sponsor for the creative Olympics.
This was a very interesting story concept.
To be honest the concept was difficult for me to grasp at first; so I had a hard time getting into the book. But as I continued to listen I started to grasp a few more aspects the author was revealing.
I’m not sure I’ll continue with the series at this time but this one was still worth the read
it had good characters, but was too busy twisting them to set up the next book to bother to resolve the world problem. very realistic to our current world.
OK Read
What a thought provoking book! SKQ has a way of bringing you into the story that I haven’t found in any other book or series that I’ve read.
SKQ could not have picked a better narrator for this series. He does a wonderful job of differentiating between the characters & I enjoy the tone of his voice.
I received a copy of this audiobook to review in exchange for an honest review.
This was a really good book, in the beginning I thought I wasn’t getting the book. However one just needs to wait a short bit and everything comes together. It was a high tech book, where there are the Ascenders post singularity – people whom are genetically altered, to be part human, part machine. They are physically beautiful, smarter, stronger, faster and have better lives, with access to anything they want.
Then there are the legacy humans, whom are not genetically mortified. They don’t have everything they need, like medicine that can cure their ill. Elijah Brighton is a 17 year old young man who is a legacy human, with a terminally sick mother and no access to the life saving medicine. He wants to become an ascender. Since another benefit of becoming an ascender is living forever. Plus if he became one his mother would also benefit becoming one also, since living forever without your close family members wouldn’t be worth it. If he ascended along with his mother, she would be cured of her sickness and it’s all Elijah wants nothing more than to save his mother by ascending, he loves and cares for her with much love, along with help from his best friend.
There are also pockets of legacy humans who are against ascending, believing they loose their soul.
Definitely worth reading, or listening to. I listened to it and it was amazing. I was just so engrossed in listening to the person reading the book. It made me feel like I was right there watching everything unfold. There’s certainly a lot that happens, secrets revealed, betrayal, murder, people who end up being very different than originally thought and people who end up being on the side I never imagined they would be. Definitely thing’s I didn’t see coming and I loved that.
The characters were very authentic, believable, the relationships were strong with love you could feel. I just really enjoyed this book. It was an ARC, but that never effects my review, ever. There are two more books in this series that I’m looking forward to listening to. I’ve read other books by this Author and so far, I don’t think you can go wrong with her books. I personally have enjoyed all the ones I’ve read.
The Legacy Human Singularity, Book 1, my fourth read from author Susan Kaye Quinn. Reminiscent in ways of The Hunger Games or Divergent. Nick Podehl’s narration made the109-hour 6-minute tale pass quickly, although the book seemed longer due to the detail written into it. I look forward to The Duality Bridge, Singularity 2). I was given an Authors Direct copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
Fascinating Story! I love all the twists and secrets that make an interesting world an even more intriguing tale. Definitely worth a read!
OH MY GOSH! WHAT IF THIS REALLY HAPPENED IN THE FUTURE? I couldn’t stop reading this book as I was concerned for Eli, his ill mom, and his dedicated friend. Since he could remember Elijah Brighton wanted to have a chance to ascend, to live forever, and to take care of his mom with no more experimental and illegal drugs to keep his mom until they could both ascend to her fail body could be as good as new. With the chance to be in the Olympics where he could ascend he was on step closer to achieving his goal. I admired this teenager and his love for his mom and I can’t wait to read this rest of the series to see what happens next!
This book was a bit disappointing to me. The story is interesting and it reads easy, but when it starts as a science fiction story, half-way in turns into a religious fiction. This book aims to ask a question “what it means to be human”, but fails in this endeavor because instead of leaving room for the reader to bring own thoughs and imagination, it pushes a certain religious world view on the reader.
Fun quick read but I thought a bit predictable
I enjoyed this novel because the author’s made the story line interesting and the characters were clear & defind.
I’m giving this book three stars mostly because I got bored and gave up. This was at the point the main character was in the competition. At least for me, the story got bogged down at that point in what read more like a YA novel as far as his interactions with the other competitors. It’s an interesting idea, and the writing is fine, but I lost interest in the main character, which is my tell-tale that it’s time to go.
I enjoy a story that isn’t predictable and this one kept bringing in new and pleasantly unexpected developments. I was disappointed when this portion of the story ended but I guess that’s why there are sequels!
Not my usual type of book so I was surprised to find it quit a unique and fun read.
It just makes you realize what a speck in this universe we are.
I would have given it a 5 star rating, but thought some things were repeated more that necessary.
