This is the second book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter book series. In this book, the police have asked Anita’s help in identifying a monster and finding it, and finding the baby it took. There are killer zombies, regular zombies, and vampires. A fantastic book from a great author.

Ms Hamilton is a standout in the genre! She is one of the few authors I purchase as soon as her book is available.

Anita Blake has three significant problems at the start of The Laughing Corpse. One, a flesh eating zombie appears to be stalking St. Louis. Two, she’s managed to tick off a woman who is quite possibly the most powerful vaudan priestess in the country. And three, a mob-connected millionaire wants to force her to raise a zombie so old that only a human sacrifice will make it possible. That means that in the second novel in the Vampire Hunter series, the zombies are coming after Anita and it promises to be a thrilling chase.
And that’s what makes this book such a great novel. Guilty Pleasures was all about the vampires, but The Laughing Corpse gives us a chance to understand much more intimately who Anita Blake truly is. She is filled with a power that lets her raise the dead from their graves and put them back again and now we get to see both the dangers in her vocation and what true evil can be done with the powers at her command.
Not that the vampires are completely missing. Jean Claude is now Master of the City and he hasn’t forgotten that Anita is his Human Servant even if she denies this and wants him to suffer a bit of amnesia. Around the edges of the story, we see Jean Claude begin to tighten the screws on Anita as he strives to assert his dominion over all the vampires of St. Louis. You see, he has tied Anita to him and he can’t afford to look weak by not forcing her to act his servant—but Anita would quite literally prefer to die than be his slave. Not that Anita is the sort of person who lays down and dies—she makes it very clear that she’s willing to kill Jean Claude to get him back out of her life even if he is the sexiest man she’s ever met.
The vaudan priestess, Senora Dominga, is one of the scariest villains Hamilton has yet created. She’s human—but she could give the monsters graduate courses in how to be evil. And unlike Anita, she feels absolutely no constraints to follow the law. If she sees profit and thinks she won’t be caught, she will do anything.
The storyline satisfyingly ties together the disparate problems confronting Anita at the beginning of the book, and in the resolution, Anita gets the first glimpse of the power that has attracted Jean Claude to her. Anita might be one of the good guys, but if she’s a paladin, she’s one who fights in shadows not the brilliant light of day. It’s a lesson Jean Claude needs to take to heart as well. Push her hard enough and she’s capable of doing a whole lot of terrible too.

This part of the Anita Blake Series and is full of unexpected twist and turns that lead the reader on a fun rollercoaster ride that will make reading the rest of the series a must.
This is NOT the first book of the series, To start at the first book look for Guilty Pleasures.

I’m going to try to keep this review short and sweet. We will see how it goes because I’m doing a re-read of one of my favorite series right now. The Anita Blake series got me into the Urban Fantasy genre, and this is the third time I’ve read the second book in the series. It has to be one of my favorite series in the book because of how dark and twisted it is as far as other books. It also was the book that introduced Anita’s hidden powers. She may be small, but she is one fierce kick-butt female heroine.
The Laughing Corpse, which is the second book in the series, focuses on Anita’s Animator/Necromancer skills and some very sick twisted villains in the story. If you read the first book and thought the former Master of the City was bad, you haven’t read anything until you meet Dominga Salvador. She is one voodoo priestess that will give you nightmares. Anita has to track down who could’ve raised a zombie that is now on a killing spree. She ends up dealing with more than she bargained for in this story. Be prepared for an action-packed, twisted storyline in this book, although you will also get Anita’s ways of dealing with danger. She’s scared at times in this book, but she has humor too in this book.
Overall, this book gets 5-stars from me, and it is one of my favorites in the series. Anita Blake will forever be one of my favorite kick-butt heroines. I know later on the books change a lot, but I enjoy them. I like how Anita grows in the books. There is no sex in this book, but a lot of action. It’s been a while since I read the earlier books, so it was nice to be back in the previous world of Anita Blake and how much she hated Jean-Claude but also loved him in her ways. I can’t wait to dive into the next books because I’ve missed this world that Laurell K. Hamilton created. I love this series, and I’m glad it’s getting me out of my reading funk I’ve been having lately.

This is quite possibly my favorite book. It’s the book that got me to WANT to publish. Without this book, without Laurell K. Hamilton, I would not be where I am right now.

Loved this book. Anita kicks some major ass as usual. Jean-Claude is super hot and I just need him to come home with me. I love Willie McCoy the normal vampire. The world building is fantastic. Can’t say enough good things about this series.

I swear I want to love this series, but I really can’t do it. I’m a sucker for punishment because I feel the need to read each book until I find one that I like. This was an improvement from Guilty Pleasure. I think I’m starting to understand Anita’s character a bit more, although I still don’t find her to be all that interesting. I like how she reads a situation and she’s very smart. She studies people’s behavior and actions and let it guide her in how she acts. She’s very defensive, if not a bit paranoid in her line of business, but she’s not afraid of pulling her gun on anyone.
The mystery surrounding this book was underwhelming. The brutal and bloody killings are interesting, but not all that important. A lot of the side characters were less memorable and just there to keep the story going. I sense that there is a lot more to Anita than even she knows that will make her more interesting than she is. I just haven’t seen it yet.

Not to heavy on erotica, more fun. Interesting for people from St Louis.
