#1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly introduces Renee Ballard, a fierce young detective fighting to prove herself on the LAPD’s toughest beat–the Late Show.Renee Ballard works the midnight shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing few, as each morning she turns everything over to the daytime units. It’s a frustrating job for a once up-and-coming detective, … job for a once up-and-coming detective, but it’s no accident. She’s been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor.
But one night Ballard catches two assignments she doesn’t want to part with. First, a prostitute is brutally beaten and left for dead in a parking lot. All signs point to a crime of premeditation, not passion, by someone with big evil on his mind. Then she sees a young waitress breathe her last after being caught up in a nightclub shooting. Though dubbed a peripheral victim, the waitress buys Ballard a way in, and this time she is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her partner’s wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night.
As the investigations intertwine, Ballard is forced to face her own demons and confront a danger she could never have imagined. To find justice for these victims who can’t speak for themselves, she must put not only her career but her life on the line.
Propulsive as a jolt of adrenaline and featuring a bold and defiant new heroien, The Late Show is yet more proof that Michael Connelly is “a master of the genre” (Washington Post).

Connelly always comes through a very satisfying read by a dependable author
I just finished reading this book and it had me from the first page which I love as I can’t put it down and want to keep reading. The characters grab you from the beginning and the story is always fascinating and interesting and edge of your seat. I highly recommend all of his books and I have another one that came out recently I am going to read next.
A little different then most of the Connelly books that I have read, new main character, but enjoyable read.
Lorved the book!
Anything written by Michael Connelly is wonderful!!!!!
I liked this book… a little unbelievable at times, but an easy read.
Slow, slow
Interesting new protagonist from Connelly.
She’s the female Harry Bosch with a slightly different kind of edge. Looking forward to more stories featuring Ballard.
Loved Bosch, this seems as worthy
Connelly is my favorite crime/murder author. I wish he had written 300 books – I read faster than he writes!
Excellent
Typical Michael Connelly. Fantastic. Picks up where Bosch left off. Main character is infinitely likable and of course somewhat flawed. Read it.
Another great Connelly book!
Fun read and good plot development. I like the protagonist. She’s realistic and gutsy.
Michael Connelly has created another wonderful character. Renee Ballard is as complex and interesting as Harry Bosch.
I always love Connelly’s characters. Their lives are never easy, just like real life. Just layers on layers.
Great writer.
Loved it…always love Connelly
Love the new character!
Michael Connelly writes good stories. The Late Show is a perfect example. His characters are well-developed and the storyline pulls you in and keeps you reading long past your bedtime.
