#1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly introduces Renee Ballard, a fierce young detective fighting to prove herself on the LAPD’s toughest beat–the Late Show.Renee Ballard works the midnight shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing few, as each morning she turns everything over to the daytime units. It’s a frustrating job for a once up-and-coming detective, … job for a once up-and-coming detective, but it’s no accident. She’s been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor.
But one night Ballard catches two assignments she doesn’t want to part with. First, a prostitute is brutally beaten and left for dead in a parking lot. All signs point to a crime of premeditation, not passion, by someone with big evil on his mind. Then she sees a young waitress breathe her last after being caught up in a nightclub shooting. Though dubbed a peripheral victim, the waitress buys Ballard a way in, and this time she is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her partner’s wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night.
As the investigations intertwine, Ballard is forced to face her own demons and confront a danger she could never have imagined. To find justice for these victims who can’t speak for themselves, she must put not only her career but her life on the line.
Propulsive as a jolt of adrenaline and featuring a bold and defiant new heroien, The Late Show is yet more proof that Michael Connelly is “a master of the genre” (Washington Post).

This story is about women left behind in France during the German occupation in WWII. The story shows courage and bravery and is easy to read. The characters are realistic and I enjoyed the book
I’d read the phone book if Michael Connolly wrote it.
Hope this is the start of a new series.
A good read, but not as good as his other books.
Micheal Connelly never lets you down!
so disappointed,,michael connelly is absolutely at the top of my list of favorite authors,,,but this was nothing more than a coldly told police procedural,,,no character building
New Character introduced
I love all Connelly books!
So pedestrian. Not nearly as good as his other novels.
I did not enjoy this book as much as other Connelly books.
Another wonderful Bosch book
Connelly has created another winning protagonist. I will be looking forward to another book in this series.
Michael Connely is one of my favorite authors. Fantastic book.
Michael Connelly is a wonderful writer! I have enjoyed everything he has written. I eagerly wait for his new books to arrive.
Typical well writen Michael Connolly effort. Liked the female lead, hope she returns.
I was hooked by the start of chapter 2. Very timely, at the current time.
Looking forward to the continuing saga of another new Connelly’s character
Not quite on par with Bosch, but a good book regardless.
I’ve been a fan of the author for years and was disappointed with this book. Had trouble relating to the main character, felt the book dragged in too many parts and the plot was just OK.
Love the new Michael Connelly character, Rene Ballard! As always, his writing is exquisite and story compelling. Nothing formulaic about this.
