Boring
Was a harbinger of things to come…. very worthwhile reading for all Americans….
This is the ninth book in Karin Slaughter’s riveting Will Trent series, although it does work as a stand alone. I treated myself to The Last Widow during lockdown for Covid-19 when reading and writing were my escapes from the real world.

The Review
This is the ninth book in Karin Slaughter’s Will Trent series but it works perfectly well as a stand alone novel too. I enjoyed this book because it developed Will’s character further and I felt I got to know him better. He becomes involved in the case almost by accident when he and his girlfriend, Sara, are at her aunt’s house for lunch. Will has been working in the garden when Sara goes to tell him lunch is ready but an explosion goes off at the nearby hospital.
They go to try to help but Sara is abducted by the perpetrators. Her mother blames Will for letting her get taken and this colours their relationship. Although Will is injured during the abduction but insists on going undercover to try to rescue Sara and secure her release. Sara discovers that she is not the only woman they have abducted, Michelle, a scientist who specialises in dangerous viruses is also captive.
Sara and Michelle are being held by a white supremacist group that lives independently in a hidden hamlet. The group lives a simple life following their leader Dash and his wife Gwen. Gwen’s father established the group but is now held prisoner.
This is a gripping story and I really enjoyed the twists and turns through which the author led her readers. Unfortunately, I felt there were parts of the story that were too verbose and could have been shortened or even deleted. There are only so many times I needed to know about Sara exercising to relieve her boredom. Also I knew Dash and Gwen were strange, wicked people without repeatedly being told about their odd gatherings for family lunches.
Nevertheless, The Last Widow is a gripping tale and I highly recommend it.

The Last Widow, by Karin Slaughter. A scarily prescient page turner about a missing CDC scientist and a white supremacist’s plan to send a deadly message to the country.
What is there to say about Karin Slaughter books I haven’t said before? An utter emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. This one starts with a bang and never slows down. I loved the multiple POV looks at what was happening for Faith, Sara snd Will all at the same times. This book should probably have a trigger warning for content because it is intense in dealing with hard subjects like pedophilia, rape, racism and cults. As always I don’t believe slaughter ever used these issues just for the shock factor but to truly portray the evil in this world. It’s a fantastic book with difficult subject matter but I fell in love the moment Will started telling Sara’s parents all the things he knows and loves about her. Just try reading that scene without a tear in your eye. I dare you.
Beginning this book was like coming home, slipping on comfortable clothing and settling down with a hot chocolate, but don’t think that this is an easy read. The joy of being amongst characters so well-drawn they are real only heightens your anxiety when they are in danger.
Sarah Linton and Will Trent are adorable together; the threat in the book is more than plausible. This is a keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat story for so many reasons, and no spoiler, but if you are already a fan you will re-read the last scene over and over. The Last Widow
A truly frightening account of something all too possible. I’ve loved Will and Sara each of their first books, but have read everything out of order. Now going back to the Grant County books is a little confusing 🙂 but, if possible, this one is even more action-packed than the previous. I don’t know how she keeps coming up with these engaging, realistic and novel plots. Definitely one to read all in one go, or over a weekend when sleep is optional!
She’s done it again! Another fantastic addition to the Will Trent series.
I feel like I got to know Will and Sara even more in this story, and I may have fallen a little bit in love with Will.
When an explosion goes off, Will and Sara both run to help. Things take an unexpected turn for the worse, and Sara is taken.
The sheer determination Will has to get back to Sara is swoon worthy. As a special agent, he always dives headfirst into a case, but it’s a whole other thing when the love of his life is in jeopardy.
Fantastic story that gave me such an emotional reaction. So much hate and loathing from the antagonists. Their actions are despicable. I wanted to cry when I realised what was happening.
Definitely one for the Karin Slaughter fans.
I love the Will Trent series of books and this is no exception. It is a frightening, action packed, heart wrenching story with threads that include biological warfare, domestic terrorism, prejudice, paedophilia, rape, murder and cults. When bombs explode at the Emory University site, medical examiner Sara Linton and her boyfriend, Agent Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, rush to provide help. When Sara gets kidnapped by the killers, Will has to go undercover to try to find her and discover what her assailants are planning next. I think it is the plausibility of this story that makes it so scary, especially with the recent rise in Alt-Right groups. The fear, helplessness, obsession and craziness are palpable in this book. You are shocked, on the edge of your seat and your heart is broken at numerous points in this captivating, gritty story. The narrator of the audiobook did an excellent job of showing the various emotions and fear. Bringing the characters to life and making the story feel real. This is a very well written and narrated story that leaves you both shaken by the content and yet warmed by the two main characters. It is a gripping read that will remain with you for a while after you have finished it.
This book captured my attention from start to finish! It is one of the Will Trent series. Yes, Karin Slaughter’s books are very graphic but the violence is not extraneous. Will Trent, a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent and Sara Linton, ME, couple up to bring down a group of criminals who have kidnapped a Dr who works for the CDC. Murder, bombings, and a nefarious plot all combine to keep the reader thirsting for more after the conclusion. My only problem with the book is that I wanted more after the end.
I loved this book, the characters were likeable and I felt right at home with them. The story was engaging and I cared what happened to them and what will happen next. I will be looking for the next book in this series. I can hardly wait to read it.
This is an entertaining, fast paced, well written romantic suspense novel. It is an action packed thriller with likable, engaging characters. I have read and enjoyed many of Ms. Slaughter’s novels. This is the first Will Trent novel that I have read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It works well as a stand alone, and has piqued my interest in reading the other entries in this series.
I purchased this book as soon as it came out because I love the Will Trent series. I read it slowly, however, because I have so many books on my “must read” shelf that there were many days that I didn’t get to this one. But it was so good! Sara is kidnapped in this latest saga of the relationship between Sara and Will. Will was severely injured when the cult members took Sara away, and now Will feels overwhelmed, angry and helpless. Most of the book is about Will trying to find Sara and the FBI trying to discover what the devious and destructive plot the cult is planning. There were some parts in the book that seemed to drag because I just wanted it to move on and do the big reveal, a revelation that was worth waiting for in the end. I recommend this book to those who enjoy thrillers and suspense.
Disclaimer
I own a copy of this book which I purchased from Barnes and Noble. I was not required to write a positive review. These opinions are my own.
I enjoy following Will Trent and Daraha’s journey of discovery, very interesting.
As always, an excellent writer……..
Love it!!! Which I loved every book in the series. Keep them coming Ms. Slaughter!!
I have been a Karin Slaughter dan for a long time – and I think this is her best book to date. Couldn’t pit it down, hated for it to end. Those 2 things are my requirement for a 5 star review!
Slaughter does it again. An excellent read incorporating timely topics.
Karin Slaughter has once again delivered an amazing thriller in The Last Widow. It is a Sara Linton and Will Trent story. Karin is a phenomenal storyteller. Glad she brought back two of my favorite characters and the rest of the supporting cast of characters. The story begins with the kidnapping of Michelle Spivey, a CDC scientist from a shopping center parking lot. The following month there is a bombing of a parking structure near the Emory University, and in the ensuing chaos, Sara is kidnapped by the perpetrators right in front of Will and Michelle is in the getaway car. There are not any clues left behind and no one knows anything about Dash, the man who kidnapped Sara. Along the way Sara has left clever clues behind to let the team know that she is OK. Dash is planning a major catastrophic event, but Sara does not know the details. Will goes undercover in Dash’s white supremacist army hoping to ascertain what are Dash’s plans and the location of Sara. He locates Sara, but the following morning leaves The Camp to accomplish Dash’s mission. As they drive toward their target, Will tries to devise a plan to put an end to Dash’s mission. The Last Widow kept me on the edge of my seat. Love all the plot twist that Karin Slaughter included in the story. It was a great read.
Was not near as good as usual very disappointing
