First off, I’ll be honest. I love Karin Slaughter’s books, especially the Will Trent series. Will is such an amazing character that Karin masterfully develops little by little in each book in the series. This is book is intense at times–but if you like Karin Slaughter you already know this is her style. As usual, the action is non-stop and the stakes couldn’t be higher when Sarah is kidnapped by a group of White Nationalists. If you enjoy reading about a group of strong female characters–BTW Faith cracked me up several times in this book–and equally strong male characters, you will love anything Karin Slaughter writes.
What an amazing story!
I absolutely loved each and every page of this on the edge of the seat story full of a rollercoaster situations and emotions that kept me awake all night and making me not wanting to stop reading, even if i was like One more chapter, one more chapter and my eyes were sore and sleepy, I just couldn’t stoped till I read the last page and had my heart beat at a normal pace.
If you love NCIS , CSI and other TV series like I do, this book it’s definitely for you.
I love both main characters for so many reasons and I’m happy it ends up the way it is after so many troubles and deadly situations they have to get through because some people are too selfish or ignorant.
You really have to read the book because I can’t give any spoilers as you have to go through the same emotions like I did.
Great writing, amazing characters and a blow minding story.

Karin Slaughter, you got me with that line. Okay, for real, you got me 18 years ago when I read Blindsighted and fell headfirst into true book love with Jeffrey and Lena. I was thrilled every year when a new book came out. Though I will read a book in any genre if it appeals to me, I was in thriller mode those days, and your books packed one hell of a punch.
Here’s what I didn’t get immediately: Even though you had me so wrapped up in Lena’s story, I thought I was reading your books because they’re incredibly smart, beautifully written, and packed with fast-paced action. While all true, it took me several (and I mean several) books to realize, I didn’t just love the intelligent, twisted plots and the devious criminals getting their due. I was in love with your very real, very down to earth characters, and you, Ms. Slaughter, are so very talented at weaving romance and the angst of romance into hardcore thrillers.
Stand-alones or series books, doesn’t matter. You are the master of blending just the right amount of romance, physical intimacy, and in-your-face violent criminals into spell-binding books. Of course I’ve read every one of your books, and of course, I will continue to read them, and this is intended to be a review of your latest, The Last Widow. But how could I possibly give that book—in my opinion, the best yet—its due, if I didn’t mention that I have been completely wrapped up in your characters for nearly twenty years?
I am a fast reader, and sadly, I usually start and finish your books within a day or two. With The Last Widow, I started it and was immediately in the zone with Sara in her aunt’s kitchen (keep in mind, I launched the last Will Trent book across the living room when I finished, and you know why) and then I hit chapter two, and my stomach was instantly in knots. I read through chapter seven, and there was so much book left, and I was scared to read more. I put the book down. For a few days. And then finally, I picked it up again, because I had to know what would happen…and I finished it that evening.
The in-depth plot in this one was very well done, and as always, when I read it, I thought well, Karin Slaughter’s not only a writer and a police chief and GBI agent, she’s also a woman who knows the fear of losing someone you love, a chemist, a biologist, and maybe a doctor, too. Incredibly well done, and after leaning all those details about Will and Sara through her point of view when she was in the cabin, I am even more fascinated by that relationship…the one a hardcore thriller writer created…Tracy Broemmer, Author of Sketching Litchfield Lake
Karin Slaughter has not disappointed! The ninth book in the Will Trent series that characters, relationships, tensions continue to develop along with a scary plot to make a grand statement by the Invisible Patriot Army. Ms. Slaughter incorporates past information in a succinct manner – just enough to clue in the newbie without boring the series followers (something not all authors are capable of doing).
Another outstanding novel by Karin Slaughter. While this is #9 in her Will Trent series, this is the first I have read and I didn’t feel like I missed anything by jumping into the series. This action-packed book keeps you on the edge of your seat with surprising twists and a plot that could have come straight from newspapers today.
A scientist from the Centers for Disease Control is kidnapped. A month later there is a devastating explosion on the Emory campus which includes Emory Hospital and University, CDC, Grady Hospital and FBI headquarters. Will’s girlfriend Sara, a medical examiner, is also kidnapped when they rush to the scene of the explosion. Will goes undercover to find out what the group that kidnapped Sara plans to do next and, of course, to save Sara. What Will and Sara discover is beyond comprehension – pure evil. With plans to cause the death of multitudes of people the race is on to stop them.
The story is told in the alternating perspectives of Will and Sara. I felt like I was right there alongside Sara as she moved among the members of the group soon realizing how serious these people are about their “mission”. Then in Will’s chapters I could feel his fear for Sara’s life. If you like a story where you have to remind yourself to breathe, I highly recommend this book.
“The Last Widow” by Karen Slaughter is graphic, terrifying, and redemptive, and thus not for sensitive readers; hence, only four stars. It is part of the “Will Trent” Series, but new readers will immediately become immersed in the story. This book is about hate and the people who make hate a commodity. Sara Linton’s husband had died in the line of duty, and it seemed like the world was filled with widows.
Sara Linton brought Will Trent with her to a dinner gathering at the family home. Trent’s divorce had just been finalized, and they had settled into a happy routine. Two explosions from the nearby Emory University campus shake the ground. Trent, a special agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and Linton, a doctor, immediately rush to the scene. This decision forever changes them.
The chapters that follow expose danger, trauma, and horror. Linton and Trent are caught up in a detailed and complicated plot that includes domestic terrorists, white supremacist groups, military dissidents, survivalists, antisocial drug dealers, and lone-wolf shooters. The goal is many people dying, and the motivation is fame.
Time is important, and events involving different people in different locations occur simultaneously. The time is noted at the start of each chapter, and that starting time goes slightly backward to encompass the actions of the previous chapter from a different perspective. Each point of view reflects different concerns, procedures, and levels of panic. All commentaries work together to develop a complex and complete view of the action. Like a diorama, everything happens all around with the reader in the center. Tick-tock, tick-tock, the minutes pass for each person; details are revealed, and plans are discussed. Readers react to the trauma, follow the preparations, and feel the tension along with characters. The pace is non-stop, and the action is intense.
“The Last Widow” deals with controversy, hate, and abuse. Danger, desperation, and blood ooze from every line. Despite the trauma, the story is compelling and gripping. Every page pulls readers into the ordeal. Ultimately, there is resolution along with the death.
I received a review copy of “The Last Widow” from Karen Slaughter, HarperCollins, and William Morrow. The story is relevant, current, and frighteningly real; it could be from any nightly news broadcast. I recommend it with a caveat for violent content, but this is consistent with Slaughter’s previous books. Regular readers will be glad to know that amidst the distress and devastation, Will and Sara attempt to address at least some of their many complicated personal issues.
How? How can a human being do such terrible thing? A father, mother or anyone for that matter. It isn’t fathomable that there is so much hate in the world.
This book takes on difficult subjects. Pedophilia, brain washing, racism. And the scariest thing of all….. How easy it is to find people willing to die for something someone else is telling them. Great story with much to think about after the last chapter is read.
The ninth installment in the Will Trent series does not disappoint! What do the kidnapping of a scientist from the Centers for Disease Control and massive explosion in a major Atlanta neighborhood have in common? Will and Sara soon find out when they find themselves embroiled in the middle of a militia group/cult trying to destroy many human lives. In a deadly showdown, Sara is also kidnapped, and Will must risk all to get her back. Karin Slaughter writes great books and creates fantastic characters, and they keep me coming back! I once again listened to this on audiobook with the talented Kathleen Early narrating this compelling book. I gave it five flaming stars!
This “ripped from the headlines” plot was a real page-turner! The whole time I was reading I kept wondering…why haven’t I read this author before now?!? Time to read the Will Trent series from the beginning!
This is Karin Slaughter at her very best and I just want more. The Last Widow was an absolute thrill from beginning to end.
Set in Atlanta and a nearby forest, this book features Sara Linton and Will Trent. There are a lot of twists in the story as they seek to identify who is behind a bombing on a nearby campus. Highly recommended.
Gripping and enthralling. This book will have you captivated right from the very first words. Definitely one of my new favourite authors.
Even though this is the 9th book in the series and I haven’t read the first 8, I didn’t feel that I was behind or missing anything.
The book starts out with a high-ranking CDC employee being kidnapped in front of her young daughter.
One month later, a hospital is bombed in Atlanta. Will and Sara, a physician, live nearby and went to see if they could assist at a car accident they could hear from Sara’s house. Will is an agent with the GBI, Georgia Board of Investigations. While at the scene, they both sense that something isn’t right. As Will is retrieving Sara’s medical bag from her car, he witnesses her being kidnapped by one of the “victims” of the car accident.
This begins Sara’s inclusion into a cult-like group that is setting up for delivering “The Message”. She is supposed to be helping out with sick kids within the group but she also sees the CDC specialist and is unsure as to how she fits in with all of this.
Will and the other investigators with the GBI are helping the FBI investigate this group and he goes undercover to get in there and see if he can find Sara and the CDC employee.
I really enjoyed this book but it started out with 4 different versions of the same event – the bombing of the hospital – from 4 different perspectives. Once I got through that part, it made sense. As mentioned, I don’t feel as though I need to have read books `1-8 but will probably read future books in this series as well as other books by this author.
Absolutely love the characters! And the twisting plot lines.
Very informative especially about the group ipa and other groups that are based on hate.
Will Trent the kind of guy you want on your side.
So prescient – hard to believe this was written before the Jan 6 2021 invasion of the Capitol – captures the essence of the white supremacy movement.
I would especially like to thank Harper Collins France and the Netgalley website for allowing me to read this book.
The story takes place in August 2019 where we find Sarah Linton and her companion Will Trent who find themselves in the middle of a bombing in a neighborhood in Atlanta. Sarah is desperate to help the victims but is kidnapped in front of Trent by the bombers. She finds herself in Appalachia with women in long white dresses and men with guns. These men want to multiply the terrorist attacks.
Will Sarah and Will be able to stop them from committing the irreparable?
I was immediately hooked on the story, which is so gripping, addictive, captivating, full of suspense and twists and turns with very endearing characters.
Great suspense novel
I had read the first book in the Grant County series featuring Sarah Linton and then jumped to this book, which is a crossover with Slaughters Will Trent series. Both Blindsighted and The Last Widow were excellent books. I will have to go back and read both series in order.
As I’ve come to expect from Karin Slaughter’s book, this was frightening and amazing. Also, I can’t stop thinking about how terrifying this plot would be if it were to really happen. I’m guessing that some details were omitted or changed so that this could not be a blueprint for anyone to follow.
Sara, a doctor, is kidnapped and she doesn’t know why. Another doctor who works for the CDC was previously kidnapped, and nobody knows why. Will, Sara’s boyfriend who works for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, goes undercover in an effort to find her and to stop the bad guys if he can.
Great story! Highly recommended!
