Daxon Ward turned his back on his legacy decades ago. Destined to become one of the realm’s Guardians—a magickal subspecies with blood-deep resistance to all things magick—he was one of the few who understood their true mission. After witnessing the murder of a werewolf family at their hands, Daxon turned his back on the Guardians without a second thought. Now, as his younger brother is set to … younger brother is set to graduate and join the ranks of the realms’ supposed protectors, Daxon finds himself swallowing his hatred and traveling to the Guardian Training Academy.
Not long into what should have been a peaceful celebration, the academy comes under attack, and Daxon crosses paths with the realms’ most notorious assassin, a Sage with the reputation of leaving no survivors.
Faced with his own mortality, Daxon is forced to make a decision.
Does he leave the academy to defend itself? Or stay and fight beside those he walked away from?

Very tragic story. Dax fought all his life to get guardians to kill only the ones who needed it and not all who were magical. Now we will see what happens next. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a honest review.
The world building was fabulous. Love FMC, Sienna. I can’t wait to learn more about the characters and their “adventures”. I can’t wait to read the series.

An enjoyable read that gives you all the details to understandings of the series. I love the characters and extras that come from a prequel. A complex world with a story that is both action packed and intense.
Lord what doesn’t this story have. An adventurous well crafted story that has action and angst a plenty. This prequel definitely sets the stage for the world of twists and turns the sure to come. A unique and mesmerizing tale that’s filled with depth and dimension.

Of Guardian blood, Dax Ward wants nothing to do with it and lives his life as a mercenary, being paid to do what his family did for free. Sienna has come back to the Guardian Academy to have her vengeance on Amos Ward, the Guardian who tortured her for years. This prequel truly tells a tale of violence and hatred of all things different. Some truths shouldn’t hurt so bad. Highly recommended.
I loved the series of these books, i just hadn’t read this prequel novella, which helped me put some things in place i had wondered about.

The first book in the Cambrexian Realm series what a start to this series. Daxon Ward and Sienna a Sage meet for the first time when they come to the Guardian Training Academy where it is under siege. She will save him and his friend Corrine. I want to read more in this series. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The Last Ward, by Jessica Wayne, is both exciting and terrifying all rolled into one great novella. Under attack at the largest guardian graduation ceremony ever, Daxon and Sienna find themselves fighting for their lives as all manner of Magickals lay siege. Will they survive? Will anyone else? Who orchestrated the attack?
“The Last Ward” by Jessica Wayne is a short novelette (barely 100 pages) set in the “Cambrexian Realm” world. This is a prequel to the series that focuses on Daxon Ward, who after witnessing the Guardians murder of a werewolf family, turned his back on them. But now fate catches with him, his own brother is about to graduate from the Academy and joint the Guardians and as the graduation celebration is overshadowed by an attack, Daxon is forced to reconsider his own alliances.
A fast-paced, interesting prequel that does exactly what it should, introduce the world and characters to the reader with the added bonus of being a captivating story about one of the most non-nonsense MC in urban fantasy.
He walked away from what he had been trained to do when he saw an attack on a werewolf family. Now he is going back to see his brother making the trade but they are attacked. Will he stay and fight? Will he just walk away from it all? See what he decides

The Last Ward is a prequel novelette that packs a punch. We get to know Dax Ward and learn about his family drama, especially regarding his father. Things are tense between them. Just when you think things couldn’t get any worse, they do! The characters come to life and the world building is descriptive. The story is also easy to follow. I think it’s important to read The Last Ward first before Warrior of Magick (Book 1), because it explains a pivotal event to the series.
An Academy read that is a fast pace and action packed read. That had me on the edge of my seat. There’s twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. I definitely recommend.

Interesting prequel in the Cambrexian Realm series that has me excited to see where this series goes!
The world seems like it’ll be unique, and I like that there seems like there will be some really great action and adventure. This book is from Daxon’s POV. He comes from a Guardian family, but he went against his family by not becoming a Guardian, so his father treats him horribly. A Guardian is like a soldier that takes out magical types without much thought for what the magical person/creature/etc. is actually like; they have a slaughter all mentality. Innocence isn’t a factor for the Guardians. Daxon is an strong, interesting character. I’m not a huge fan of all who survived in this book; I’m sure it will cause issues in the futures, but I’m loving the other characters!
Seems like this series will be lots of fun!
This is just a short introduction to the series and its hero Daxon Ward. He returns home for a family celebration and ends up being only one of two survivors, not including the King’s Sage who saved their lives, of a complete massacre of his home. I am looking forward to book one!

Jessica Wayne has created an intricate world that I was immediately drawn into. I will definitely be following this series. Although I received a free copy, I purchased one because I’m sure I will be reading it again.

The author has written a prequel that actually whets the appetite for the novel forthcoming. The character Daxon is very believable in his rebellion against his father and an apparently unnecessarily brutal tradition. That makes the scenario that puts him in the position of having to rebuild everything that he rejected in his rebellion particularly poignant and painful. Think James Bond after the death of Vesper Lynd and what happens next. Does that happen with Daxon?

What an amazing intro for what will be an epic series. This is a page turner action packed read. That will have you wanting more and more. Can’t wait for the next one.
