I was surprised to find I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I’d hoped. I heard it was gripping and a thriller…..not for me.
The plot started off okay and I could see it becoming an intense read BUT the characters were hard to really like! Emma seemed a pushover for her husband and son yet she was employed, took care of them and put herself last. Why didn’t the author make her husband nicer or her son less of a rude brat?
And once the plot thickened with threats, pictures, and scares ….why no friends to offer help or relatives? It’s as if they are alone but sge works for a university and he has his home building business…don’t they ever mingle or see people? And the attitude of the police seemed way off!!
Once Emma is in the place and deals with her surroundings, the book grinds to a halt and it becomes more a story of her surviving there.
The twist, comes late, it seems improbable in its details and the fact the conclusion is so abrupt and fast…..that just seemed wrong. If the author had developed more likeable characters, more detailed and shortened the story about the place and then slowly released the twist..it would have helped. No real resolution in the end plus why let her out of the place?
The place is used so I don’t give too much away. Borrow the book, don’t buy it.
Very interesting premise. So scary what memory can do. The “bad guy” was pretty obvious to me still overall a fun book to read with a plot that isn’t like all the other thrillers. The ending kind of wrapped up quickly and without the care of the rest of the book.
fantastic story and scary as hell!
Interesting twists and turns; for the most part, it was unpredictable.
I was very surprised by the endin
enjoyed the book
If I weren’t so stubborn about always finishing a book, and if it wouldn’t have broken my Kindle, I would have thrown this book in the trash. The premise of the book was interesting and not like anything else I’ve ever read, but the main character made me want to scream at her. Does she think she is the only woman who ever had to run a house, take care of her family, and work full time? PLEASE!! Pull up your big girl panties and stop whining! And after you do the dirty deed be brave enough to step up and admit to it. Was it because you were so weak that you let it happen that you couldn’t face it? If you are a strong woman who has had to face a lot of adversity this book may irritate you as much as it did me!
Interesting story, twists & turns
Kept my interest. A quick read. The ending was a bit easy to predict.
Fun read
The Last Thing I Saw is a psychological thriller written in a concurrent before-and-after style. The prologue sets up the suspense of the story right away, with the protagonist, Emma, pointing a gun at someone, having to make a very difficult decision. At the beginning of the first chapter, she finds herself in a psychiatric hospital with no recollection of the events leading to her being there. The story ensues with her psychiatrist, Dr. Shaw, helping her recall the trying incidents that occurred, while other key players emerge through the telling of her memories as Emma recalls them.
Emma’s character was written well, but I would have liked most of the others to be more fleshed out. They were believable, but I found it difficult to be invested in most of them as they seemed one-dimensional. There was more than one antagonist, which lends to the suspense factor, but you will need to read to end to discover the twists and turns that confuse the reader – in a good way – and end with the “big reveal”.
I found this book to be engaging and suspenseful, but there were some chapters that were slower than others, and there was at least one element of the storyline that was unresolved. Additionally, the ending seemed slightly rushed, which was a little disappointing. Generally, though, I was interested in what memories would emerge with each of Emma’s sessions with Dr. Shaw, and that kept me reading. In my experience, that means I like the author’s style and will add more of Sinclair’s books to my to-read list.
I do recommend you read The Last Thing I Saw and look forward to reading more by Alex Sinclair. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture, and Mr. Sinclair for the advanced copy and the opportunity to review this book.
Well now doesn’t that first chapter draw you right into the story. I like how the book goes back and forth between after and before. What does Emma not what to remember? Well if I was her I would want to forget it to. The book leads you up the point were Emma remembers that night. I guessed who the bad person was in this book and was correct in my guess. The reasoning makes sense and is completely weird all at the same time. I wanted to keep reading to find out what happens next.
*Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this for my honest opinion*
