Survival in Man’s Second Dark Age
Three hundred years after the fall of society, the last fragments of civilization are clinging to life, living in the ruins of the ancient cities in nearly-medieval conditions. Technology has been reduced to legend, monsters roam the forests, and fear reigns supreme. But that is just the beginning…
The wind-borne spores are spreading, disfiguring men and … spreading, disfiguring men and twisting their minds, turning them into creatures that threaten to destroy the townships. Among the townsfolk, political and the religious, dissension is spreading.
Through it all, a mother must protect her son…

The Last Survivors written jointly by Bobby Adair and T.W. Piperbrook is about, as it says on the cover, a Dystopian Society in a post-apocalyptic world. This is the first book in this series.
This story is like, many others like it, how the human race was all but wiped out, there were a small number of survivors and the hordes of infected, well they are not human anymore, they are things, creatures that have mutated after being infected by the spores. It only takes one tiny speck to start the change from human to whatever the other creatures are. They are violent, they smell like rotting flesh, they are misshapen from growths which show on their skulls and spines.
So we have a town where a mother, named Ella has a son named William and the story revolves around them. Twice a year the town hold a cleansing. They all strip down naked and their bodies are inspected for any signs of the infection, as the whole town looks on, and this society has an interesting way of dealing with those who show lumpy warts from infection. With this in mind, the story is about how Ella’s son William has early signs of infection and Ella will do anything to save her son. So this is where their adventure begins.
Ella and William encounter help when needed, they experience betrayal, theft, disappointment and much violence as they travelled toward what they hope is safety.
Bobby Adair and T. W. Piperbrook have created a world that is harsh, where only the strong and cunning will survive. Their journey is hazardous and full of peril. The story moved along at a fair pace, as there seems to be a lot of plot building going on and developing of characters. As this is the first in a series of 6 books, the end was left in a bit of a cliff hanger, which means I have to read the book 2 as nothing was really resolved at the end of this one, there are just more questions that need to be answered.
I enjoyed reading about Ella, she is a mother who lost everything when she decided to put her son first and run, she is determined to give her son as much hope as she can before the disease takes him from her.
This book would suit mature readers as there are some graphic, violent moments that might be disturbing to young readers. So, jump in and give this a try, if you enjoy dystopian post-apocalyptic, tales of survival, this is for you, but be prepared to read all 6 books, as you will want to once you start.
I was gifted a copy of this book by the authors
The world charged 300 years ago. Mankind is thrust back into the Middle Ages where superstition, Ignorance and cruelty abounds. Not only do the people have to try to eek out a living but they must be vigilant about the “demons” and the disease that turns men into them. The story centres around a woman who sees her son begin the process of changing and tries to protect him.
This is the first book in the post apocalyptic series, The Last Survivors, and occurs 300 years after the collapse of society. The characters were interesting and I found them engaging as they navigated through their different experiences. The narrative allows the reader to visualize the setting in which the story takes place. In addition, the ever present oppressive fear they experience is palatable allowing the reader a glimpse into the different levels of their society. The storyline flows smoothly and is full of personal dramatic experiences, danger, and action. This book is just the beginning of the series but has done its job in that it got my interest and makes me want to read more about the characters.
I got the 6 book set. Loved it. Very good.
Not exactly my cup of tea as books go but it was an interesting read.
