Hailed as “an extraordinary novel of men at war” (The Washington Post) this is the book that inspired the TNT television series starring Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra, Adam Baldwin and Michael Bay as Executive Producer. The unimaginable has happened. The world has been plunged into all-out nuclear war. Sailing near the Arctic Circle, the U.S.S. Nathan James is relatively unscathed, but the future is … unscathed, but the future is grim and Captain Thomas is facing mutiny from the tattered remnants of his crew. With civilization in ruins, he urges those that remain—one-hundred-and-fifty-two men and twenty-six women—to pull together in search of land. Once they reach safety, however, the men and women on board realize that they are earth’s last remaining survivors—and they’ve all been exposed to radiation. When none of the women seems able to conceive, fear sets in. Will this be the end of humankind?

This was a wonderful book!
Super read
This book has been on my shelf for years, and I’ve read it several times. I always wanted to read a sequel. The tv version took an enjoyable sidetrip, but the book is still my favorite.
didn’t finish
I didn’t care for the writing style but very much like the story line. I like dystopian so if you don’t don’t buy the book,
As some have written in their reviews, the writing style is a bit different. However, don’t let that throw you off. Still an exciting book that will keep you wanting more.
Very difficult reading. Interesting concept but the author’s thought process tended to elaborate forever on the details of the main character. I became very bored and skipped many pages.
Potentially good story but the author seems to be impressed with his own writing and vocabulary. I am well read and have a good grasp of vocabulary but found myself having to keep a dictionary at hand. It seemed every couple of paragraphs I was having to look up a word. Also, he tended to use five paragraphs when one or two would have sufficed. I got too bored to finish which was disappointing because I was fascinated by the story line.
Pretty original take on the doomsday scenario. Some cool surprises, a feel good ending. I think there will be continued adventures for the survivors. I can see sequels coming, and I’ll read them.
This author is the most self-absorbed I’ve ever tried to read… I only made it through 2 chapters… Very boring read..
Very hard to grab my interest. Read the first 50 pages and gave up – not enough background as to how they ended up in the situation
A very engrossing book. It is scary to think that this could actually happen. It is much better than the TV show bearing its name.
Had me thinking of Conrad and Henry James. Thought provoking.
Great story line.
