For five years, Charlotte (Charlie) Holloway has lived as a boy in the slums. But when one theft too many gets her arrested, her only means of escape lies with a dead man. Charlie hasn’t raised a spirit since she first discovered she could do so five years ago. That time, her father banished her. This time, she brings even more trouble upon herself.
People are now hunting Charlie all over … over London, but only one man succeeds in capturing her.
Lincoln Fitzroy is the mysterious head of a secret organization on the trail of a madman who needs a necromancer to control his newly “made” creatures. There was only one known necromancer in the world – Charlotte – but now there appears to be two. Lincoln captures the willful Charlie in the hopes the boy will lead him to Charlotte. But what happens when he discovers the boy is in fact the young woman he’s been searching for all along? And will she agree to work for the man who held her against her will, and for an organization she doesn’t trust?
Because Lincoln and his ministry might be just as dangerous as the madman they’re hunting.

How have I not seen these books before? They’re terrific! The writing is easy and engaging, the characters VERY interesting. It’s kind of Sherlock meets Steampunk meets Buffy. I’ve gotten through the first three in a period of about a week, and would read them faster except I have a shared checking account and don’t want to get caught spending $50 at once on ebooks about a Victorian necromancer! Enjoy!
Dark especially in the beginning. Great characters, suspenseful, page turner.
I really enjoyed the writing style and found it was a “page-turner” for that alone. The author’s voice was captivating and built a great story. The plot and characters were also interesting, though there was quite a bit of build up and a so-so payoff. It’s apparently the first book of 10, so I guess that makes sense, but I just thought there would be more… necromancing in a book about a necromancer. I might still pick up the next book because if anything it’s entertaining.
Love C.J. Archer! First of her many series I have read and now I am excited to read others.
I can’t wait to read more from this author!
Kept my interest and look forward to reading more from this author.
Read the series right through!
Fans of Gail Carriger will like this one.
Funny, entertaining, and suspenseful. Can’t wait to read the next one!
I liked this book at the beginning. I do not like where she took the characters, it was too predictable for me with the whole romance thing. I thought I would be interested in the whole series at first, but after I finished it and looked up what happened with the rest of the stories, not so much.
Corpses, necromancers, slightly stupid sidekicks, and a attractive “captor” affectionately named Mr. Death- what more can one ask for?
I really enjoyed this book, mostly because of Charlie. Her stubborness and quick wit kept me highly entertained, and I felt like she really stuck all of the odd people together and made them a- not a family really, but at least a cohesive-ish unit.
And Mr.Death, just made me happy. With all of his gruff-ishness, and superiority, it really laid down the groundwork just waiting to be obliterated by pretty much everyone.
I’m really exited to read the next book.
The story makes you want to read more and more
