Great thriller!
My first by Mary Burton. I will be reading all of her backlist and new releases!
I really enjoyed reading this book.
Mary Burton has another winner with The Last Move. She always delivers a compelling story, with strong characters, and a little romance. She always delivers a heart pounding, twist and turn story that well keep you reading late into the night.
Scary and wicked are two words that come to mind after reading this book! I may have nightmares. This was like an episode of Criminal Minds. There is a criminal profiler and a depraved serial killer on the run. Mary Burton knows how to write a good story! Once you know the story there is no mystery to who the villain of the story will be but the psychological race will keep you up reading until you are finished!!
THIS REVIEW IS FOR BOTH THE AUDIOBOOK AND EBOOK VERSIONS
Very interesting story with great characters which the narrator done a spectacular job with bring to life. Suspenseful and twisted, great action and emotional scenes. I recommend this book.
The Last Move (Audible Audio), my sixth romantic suspense read by amazing/prolific author Mary Burton. Incredibly well-written The Last Move is an exciting, enjoyable read with well-developed characters. Teri Schnaubelt’s narration excellent narration adds to an excellent book’s enjoyment! My wife & I listen to audiobooks together and this one is a real winner. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
loved all her books
Mary Burton writes such strong female characters and you can’t help but love the men who love them. This book was no exception. I found it suspenseful and intriguing and I enjoyed the read. I liked the characters and the steady pace of the story. Although you find out early on who is behind the killings, it doesn’t take away the anticipation of the capture of not one but two serial killers and the revelation of the mastermind behind it all.
This, my friends, is how a mystery/thriller is supposed to be written! I was engaged in the story from the beginning, with victims out the wazoo and FBI Agent Kate Hayden and Detective Theo Mazur hot on the trail of the perps. I loved how the author started each chapter with a teaser. My favorite, I think, was: “I’ve found my bait; now it’s time to build the trap.” (Page 176). The entire book was one big maze for me, taking me to the places where the killer might be and then turning me upside down again and again. What a thrill ride! I really enjoyed getting to know Kate and Mazur; their backgrounds alone were worth reading the book! This books was totally absorbing and enjoyable. As a fan of mysteries, this was not totally one of those since I knew from the beginning the men Kate and Mazur were seeking. However, the great pleasure for me lay in how Mary Burton led me on a chase through so many crime scenes in order to come to a satisfying conclusion. This is a standalone book and I highly recommend it! It even includes a touch of romance! I will say that it is not for the squeamish since there are some graphic details of what the bad guys do to their victims, but that added to the interest factor for me. Loved it!

Excellent read! Terrific characters and page-turning plot. Recommend to those who love romantic suspense or thrillers.
Loved every word and stayed up all night to finish reading it. A great book by a wonderful author.
Lots of action as Kate tries This was a wonderful story filled with lots of twists as Kate hunts someone copying previous serial killers that she put away. Great interaction with Detective Theo and some great chemistry. I loved how this FBI agent was as a character and all the twists in the story with a surprise at the end. Loved it!
I LOVE Mary Burton!!!! She never let’s us readers down.
Kate and Theo are an awesome team. All of the characters and secondary characters are interwoven perfectly.
If you love thrillers with the FBI and cops hot on the trail of murderers, than your in for an awesome adventure. There is murder, revenge, cunning, planning, unexpected twists and turns and just when you think you’ve got it figured out….BAM, your in for a surprise.
If your all about hot dirty sex than move on, but if your in it for a great story with great characters, and just the right amount of romance than grab this book.
This is a standalone book, so grab it, get your drink and snack, and sit back and get ready for heart pounding, unputdownable, page turning, thriller.
I truly hope these characters turn up again in more Mary Burton books.
This was a really good story. The past meets the present in the most gruesome way . Clues are peeled apart piece by piece to find the killers. The story moves along nicely with several twists you don’t see coming. I always find Mary Burton’s books well worth the read. Sat up way to late to finish this one.
*I won this book through Netgalley for free for my honest opinion*
This was my first time reading a Mary Burton book. Let’s just say that she has gained a new reader. It was just the sort of mystery, suspense mixed with romance novel I love to read about. I ESPECIALLY liked that the main female character was short (like me). I hardly ever read about a main female character who are strong independent short women. So that was a refreshing change of pace for me.
Read this book!
This is my first novel by Mary Burton, and she certainly delivers a well-written murder mystery. This book has it all—detailed police work, twist and turns, suspense, horrific crime scenes, and even a touch of romance with some action between the sheets. This book has the authorities covering three different investigations and pulling the files on two solved FBI cases. The one thing all these cases have in common, is FBI profiler, Kate Hayden.
Detective Theo Mazur is a man in transition, as he just recently moved from Chicago to San Antonio to take a job near his teenage daughter. Besides starting a new job, he is adjusting to his new status as a divorce dad, while still grieving the death of his baby son. The last thing Detective Mazur needs is a high-profile murder case, especially one that closely resembles the “Samaritan”, a well-publicized solved serial killer case. To make the situation even more complex, a burner phone is found next to the victim with a startling message for Federal Agent Hayden from the killer. Hayden is pulled from her current assignment, tracking down a true monster, to return to her home state of TX, to work with Mazur. Together they work to find the truth, but at what cost, as old wounds are reopened, and innocent people are put in the path of danger.
For the most part, the author bypassed the stereotypical friction between the FBI and local police. Hayden & Mazur work together with mutual respect, and without the trappings of sexual tension. The author allows the physical relationship to develop as a natural release between two people brought together in a highly stressful environment, which I found refreshing. It seems most authors lead with the sexual attraction, which often takes away from the mystery/suspense theme of the book.
This may be my first book by this author, but it won’t be my last. Rating 4.75 (less)
A fast paced suspense with lots of twists and turns in this latest thriller from Mary Burton. FBI agent Kate Hayden finds herself playing a deadly game of chess with a killer who fractured her life and family 17 years ago. Each murder he carries out is intentional and strategic, and he never waste a move. When he teams up with another serial killer who has a beef with Kate the game turns even more deadly. With a great cast of characters and twisted killers this page turner never disappoints.
The Last Move is Mary Burton at her best. FBI Agent Kate Hayden and Detective Theo Mazur are paired to catch what seems to be a copycat serial killer. While the killer is revealed in the story, there are twists and turns and a gripping ending that keep you hooked. The Last Move has Intense characters, scary and disturbed killers, and a little romance. This book is a stand alone, but I hope to see more of FBI Agent Kate Hayden in future books. Thank you to Mary Burton and Netgalley for an ARC of this book for an honest review.
Pretty good story and characterization. A little too twisted and gory for my taste. Also, the story lacked tension.
