SANDRA DALLAS is the author of fourteen novels, including A Quilt for Christmas, Fallen Women, True Sisters, The Bride’s House, Whiter Than Snow, Prayers for Sale, Tallgrass and New Mercies. She is a former Denver bureau chief for Business Week magazine and lives in Denver, Colorado.
Sandra Dallas is one of my favourite authors. This takes place in 1880 and Gracy is the only midwife in a small mining town. She has delivered probably thousands of babies. She is trusted and depended upon. But then a baby is found dead and the evidence points to Gracy as the killer. A wonderful spell binding tale, thought provoking. It has a good ending with a twist.
The author does a great job of telling the reader how a midwife in a small Colorado mining town affects the lives of so many people- not only the mothers she helps. There are people who love her and others who hate her. When a baby is murdered she’s torn between telling secrets only a midwife would know or keeping them hidden at the cost of her innocence.
Such an intriguing story! It’s been a while since I’ve read a historical fiction, so the verbiage took some getting used to. There were so many little mysteries and unknowns throughout the story, I didn’t want to put it down. We aren’t left with a cliffhanger per se, but I definitely wasn’t anticipating that ending! Thoroughly enjoyed this read.
Beautiful piece of historical literature with surprising insight into characters. So many women will want to read this book!
I love this series. I recommend reading from the beginning of the series.
Couldn’t even get beyond the first chapter
Loved this book. Will definitely buy more Sandra Dallas books
Typical, wonderful Sandra Dallas. I enjoy everything she writes. This book transports you back to a time when everything was simpler, yet very complicated. A great read.
Enjoyable story of a gold rush era midwife. It is filled with examples of women struggling to become independent rather than their father’s or husband’s property. Very interesting plot and subplots
Good read. Informative, and loved the plot and historical time
I love Sandra Dallas, and this book, while it was good, and held my interest the entire time, wasn’t my all-time favorite; but it was still a really good book. It was well researched, and was totally believable for the time period and setting for the story. Life was definitely hard in the mining town of Tenmile in the 1800’s, and she portrays it perfectly. Yes, there were tragedies, but that’s what makes her stories ring true. I can almost see these characters in my mind, and grow to care about them because of how Sandra Dallas gradually reveals them. I recommend this book!
Being in health care I found this very interesting
I enjoyed this book as it had a historical base. I thought it was well thought-out and an easy, entertaining read.
Love the insight of time past and the struggles of women during this time and how some women took the lead to champion the rights of women.
Gives one a real feel for the tough life of gold miners.
Really enjoyed! Unsuspected ending.
Loved it. Historically accurate to the time! Wonderful story that I did not want to end.
There were very few jobs open to women and this was a respected one. For a married midwife who could not achieve motherhood herself, her dedication to the women who depended on her was compelling.
I enjoyed this glimpse of the world of a midwife in the Colorado mountains. Gracy is the only midwife for miles. She cares for all the needs of the women in and around Swandyke. She helps deliver their babies, consoles them when a baby dies, comforts them when they can’t have a child and provides support when they have an unwanted pregnancy . She only wants the best for the women. Gracy carries many secrets from her own life and secrets the women entrust to her. Even when her own freedom is in jeopardy she will not speak for herself for fear of having to reveal a confidence. The ending stunned me. I did not see it coming. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and plan to read more by Sandra Dallas. Don’t miss this book.
Great awesome story
