A good introduction to the Kate Murphy Mystery books. This novella jumps from her marital problems to her difficulties at work, to the mysterious and increasing deaths of several animals. It could have used more details in some area, but all in all, a good, quick read. I am looking forward to reading more in this series.
This was the 1st book I have read by this author. I loved it.
C. C. Jameson has a hit with Kate Murphy Mysteries. Book 1, ‘The Last Lies’ starts badly for Kate, at home and at work. Her naivety is maddening while she puts up with an abusive, non caring husband. She’s trying to make it in a mans world as a police officer with aspirations of making detective, but she’s not accepted by her coworkers and she won’t stand up for herself to one’s abusive pranks. Mr Jameson twists the plot, has Kate take charge of her life, and readers get a great read. I’m looking forward to following Kate in book 2, does she have what it takes to be a good detective?
This book tells the story of the beginning of the Kate Murphy Mysteries. It is written with underlying themes that are so common. The mystery is full of the background that makes the next books even full of more depth. This book has great characters! So much so I read it all into the wee hours of the morning. A must read series for all mystery lovers!!
C C Jameson, ‘The Last Lies’ (Kate Murphy Mystery, book 1)
As an ARC reader I received a free copy and promised an honest review. Here it is. English isn’t my first language. Sorry for errors.
Rating: 4,5 stars (of 5).
In general: Original crime story.
Main characters:
– Kate Murphy. About 33 years old, married to Matt for some years. She’s a female officer in the Roxbury PD, Boston, with the ambition to become a detective.
– Uncle Kenny Murphy. When Kate was 13 years old her parents and her little brother were brutally killed. Kenny and his wife Lucy adopted Kate and they did what they could to give her a loving youth. When Kate was 23 years old her aunt Lucy died of cancer. Now Kate helps her older uncle as much as possible.
The Boston police department is a man’s world. So an ambitious Kate is frowned upon by many male colleagues and she has to deal with some harassment during her work. In addition she has problems with her husband Matt, who wants a devoted wife, producing children and living at home. Before their marriage Kate already made clear to him that she had other ambitions, but Matt believes that – now they are married – she has to do what he wants.
During a routine surveillance Kate gets involved in the killing of some animals. She takes the case serious and is laughed at by her boss and many male colleagues. But after a while it appears that a serial animal killer is terrorizing Boston.
The author C.C. Jameson then describes how the investigation in the killings develops. In the meantime Kate’s private problems escalate. And after some action scenes, the sketching of a few credible extra characters and the exciting private investigations of a tenacious, talented Kate the serial animal killer is arrested and
Kate’s marriage situation has become clear. For me it was a pleasure to read this introduction into the Kate Murphy Mystery series.

I enjoyed this book. The fact that Kate‘s life is fleshed out in her job, her marriage, her family and her past makes it so engaging. Her experiences at work and home with bullying brings to the forefront how abuse can be experienced by many of us. This being part of the authors purpose according to the notes. I do hope if any reader is experiencing similar abuse that they will reach out and get help.
The story is engaging and interesting. The mystery of the animal deaths will wrench the heart of animal lovers and give much satisfaction when the culprit is caught.
I will read more in the series.
The Last Lies by C C Jameson was a really great read. Covers the waterfront on many topics, including emotional domestic abuse, which unfortunately happens all too often. But the story itself is a great read and is suspenseful and exciting too. This book has all components needed to make it a smoothly flowing read with well deveioped characters and sub plots as well. Evokes emotions for sure, on several fronts. I highly recommend this read. Art imitating life at its finest! ENJOY!!
Glad I’m not her. Spouse was con artist. Made me wonder if spouse paid someone to attack her. Glad she finally realized being single was much better than what she had.
Seemed like it took a long time and lots of dead animals before police took the case seriously. I actually suspected the guilty party. Hope she continues to enjoy her career.
Wow this is a fantastic read. Kate is a Police Officer trying to do her best being a Cop. Shes the second female at her precinct. She also is Married. No matter what she trys things just aren’t going her way. This is a Fantastic read. If you love Mysterys this is more than 5 stars. This Author keeps you on the edge of your seat. This Author takes you into the story so you feel like your right there. It was never dull. Definitely an Epic Read.

Kate is a police officer trying to make detective. She is in a profession that seems to be a good ole boys club. She gets harassed at work. She finds out she is pregnant when taking her birth control pills daily. She is in a bad marriage and finds out her husband is cheating on her. She is working a animal killer case that seems to be spreading. This is a great read. It caught my interest from the beginning.
This is a story about a woman who is a survivor. She has no intention of being a victim and so she pursues her dream. Things don’t go to plan in her personal life and she meets resistance in her professional life. She’s a tough and is used to surviving. This is a great story, well presented, a bit rushed at times but a great read!

Slide over * Rizzoli and Isles *, Kate s in town.
By John {Shrek} Walters on 27 Avril 2018
I got a copy of this e-book elsewhere and finished it yesterday the 26th of April 2018.
Apart from the romantic aspects of the story, the mystery seemed to be original and could possibly happen in a city like Boston. The heroine -Kate- is much better at deductive reasoning (which she uses to protect the city she loves {Boston}) than she is at seeing her “husband” for the 2-bit piece of manure that he is. I thought that I d heard almost all the excuses that a cheating husband would use. I was wrong, but I still find it hard to believe that some women would think that they did something to deserve that trash.
Thankfully, it s just a story and all that Kate lost was money (can be replaced), and some excess baggage (controlling, abusive, crappy husband).
What man would let someone/anyone beat up their lady then act like it s the lady s fault because she has a career instead of being a baby making machine i.e.: bare foot and pregnant.
I look forward to reading the rest of the series. I think this might make up for losing the * Rizzoli and Isles * series, both the books as well as the television show.
{22 June 2018, FYI: I just found out that Amazon pulled my review of Last Lies because it s now politically incorrect to be biased against abusive spouses.}
An enjoyable read.
Enjoyed this read, highly recommended
