i have read many many war time books ( i love them ) but this book is by far my favorite, loved it !
Soaring High for love and country are a central theme in “The Last Letter From Juliet” by Melanie Hudson. This surreal adventure set in Word War II pulls the reader into a woman’s life filled with difficult choices. Choices that turn her life into an adventure!
During the era of the second world war women were not expected to be put into the danger of the “fight”. But the brave ladies in Hudson’s novel shucked off the conventions of the day to aid in the effort to save their county! While not facing combat, they face dangers that put them in perilous situations,
Does love factor into this picture? Who can trust that if you fall for someone during a time of war that in the end you’d be together? This complex set of circumstances plagues the main character as she sores above the clouds as the war comes to the shores of England. And how does her story play into a modern day woman’s choices?
If your a fan of historical based novels like I am, this is a book you should not miss! I enjoyed the tying together of two women’s stories who experienced separate but closely tied lives. Delve into this novel with both feet and I believe you’ll be one happy reader!
Loved this book. Two stories in one. It was inspirational.
The Last Letter From Juliet by Melanie Hudson is a beautiful historical and contemporary novel that celebrates the role of the Air Transport Auxiliary during World War II.
The novel is set in present day and the war years beginning with 1938, in the form of the story of a hundred year old Juliet. The reader is enthralled with her bravery and love as we become enchanted with her story.
Flying was still in its relative infancy but Juliet had become passionate about it as her parents were fliers. Her enthusiasm is catching. The ATA flew planes including spitfires to where they needed to be. They did not engage in combat but the women were very brave as they were targets for the German Luftwaffe.
Grief hurts. “Grief, it’s like the sand you get stuck between your toes, you can never brush it all off in one go.” Grief overwhelms, consumes and stops us in our tracks. We are immobilised and need to learn to live again. Inspiration for a character comes in the form of a plucky old lady. Loss in times of war had to be coped with immediately as the war effort must go on.
When people are old, we sometimes forget that they were once young and they lived and loved and lost. “Stop seeing me as an old lady and see me as I really am.”
The novel is about love. There are some great loves within the story. “Love doesn’t have to last a lifetime, to last a lifetime.” There are loves that will not die. There are loves that mean someone somewhere is waiting for their love. These loves reach beyond the book to envelope the reader.
Much of the novel is set in Angels Cove. The name is very appropriate as we meet angels along the way.
The Last Letter From Juliet is a novel that I never wanted to end. I ‘lived’ the action and now I mourn the ending. I loved the characters who felt like dear friends to me. The novel is a work of great beauty and great love. I adored it.
I had originally given The Last Letter from Juliet 5 stars, but knocked it down to 3 because of the outrageous editing. The story is GREAT even though I usually dislike going back and forth in time. I could vividly see in my mind the English country side, the various planes, and knew all of the characters who were in the story. I don’t want to spoil anything, but there are a few places where I felt so sad I nearly shed a tear or two and couldn’t get back to the book fast enough to see what happened next. Such a good story. As for the horrible editing, sure you could guess what the word was that needed help, but why should we readers have to do that when we paid for the book? Someone should have seen to all of the corrections. I do enjoy this author so much and ended up reading her other book the Wedding Cake Tree.
Loved her writing style. Any book where you laugh out loud and cry has my vote. I am particularly fond of reading anything in the WW2 era but really enjoyed the women portrayed in this book.
I am not usually enamored of stories about war. However, this story went beyond the war to tell about friendships and love during extremely difficult times. The book was informative of the time and tragedies but also full of hope for a better future.
Juliet is such a wonderful and inspirational character. Really enjoyed reading this book
This book touched my heart. It is a story of heroism and love and courage during such a horrific time of history. It embodied the strength of the human spirit when all else is lost.
Very enjoyable. Light reading.
Loved this book!!
I loved the book and have recommended it to others.
Absolutely amazing book and story. However, major downfall is the abundance of spelling and grammatical errors. Must have been at least a hundred of them which is unfortunate because it is an excellent story. Seems to be a publisher/editor fault. If they fix all the mistakes then it’s easily five stars.
Loved this book. Did not want it to end and was in tears. The author developed the plot and her characters very well. Great book for a book club discussion group.
Best I have read in a while.
Charming and a pleasant read.
Women pilots in Britain before and during WWII were indomitable! And their story is intertwined with the personal story of two women generations apart, who were bound by a sense of romance, and the older one’s history.
Loved this book….entertaining beginning to end. Definitely worth reading!
A good realistic book of women’s work during WWII for those who flew and helped the war effort.
Probably one of the best stories I have read in a long time. Few things make me cry but this story certainly did. Excellent book…great job!!!
