*A NATIONAL BESTSELLER * The New York Post calls The Last Fighter Pilot a “must-read” book. From April to August of 1945, Captain Jerry Yellin and a small group of fellow fighter pilots flew dangerous bombing and strafe missions out of Iwo Jima over Japan. Even days after America dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima on August 6 and Nagasaki on August 9, the pilots continued to fly. Though Japan … August 9, the pilots continued to fly. Though Japan had suffered unimaginable devastation, the emperor still refused to surrender.
Bestselling author Don Brown (Treason) sits down with Yelllin, now ninety-three years old, to tell the incredible true story of the final combat mission of World War II. Nine days after Hiroshima, on the morning of August 14th, Yellin and his wingman 1st Lieutenant Phillip Schlamberg took off from Iwo Jima to bomb Tokyo. By the time Yellin returned to Iwo Jima, the war was officially over–but his young friend Schlamberg would never get to hear the news. The Last Fighter Pilot is a harrowing first-person account of war from one of America’s last living World War II veterans.more
Out- standing book well researched and well written..
An informative book about young pilots at the end of the war. More of a retelling of a pilots life and the loss of his friends and fellow warriors. More appealing to history fans than any other type reader.
Very good
Account of the last of the air war as the allies close on Japan.
Good book.
Lot of names
It’s a good story, especially in that it’s true. It provides a realistic sense of what it was like to be a carrier pilot. But I can’t give the writing and framing of the story top grades. I enjoyed reading this book – not a waste of time!
AWEsome and Great Historical story told from personal experience! The historical and in depth details kept you wanting to know more! To learn all I did about Japan and their cruel treatment of all prisoners was Atrocious!
Fair rendition!
The book picked some very poignant and terrible times in the wanIng days of WW2, but went nowhere with it. Instead of being a book focused on Jerry and his squadron mates, it was like a See’s sampler of various, unrelated events.
As much as Iike WW2 aviation, I found this book tiresome
Everyone needs to read this book. The amazing courage of our fighting men is hard to visualize, but this book did it for me. Excellent.
As the child of a WWII airman I have heard his stories of the war in the Pacific and read a great deal of the military history of that conflict. This is the first time though, in reading the narrator’s story that I have felt that the feelings of loss and tragedy equaled or out weighed the feelings of accomplishment. The narrator is truly one of the greatest generation. Not so much for what he did during that war, but because of how he was able to return and live a normal life after the horror.
A great read about the history of the War In the Pacific between the US and Japan from one who lived it and made that history. My greatest admiration and appreciation goes out to our greatest generation. They truly were the greatest.
Excellent and historically accurate. Well describes my fathers stories of the march across the Pacific
A good view into what life was like for fighter pilots and others related at the end of WWII.
Good book and well written, kept my interest right up to the last page.
I enjoyed reading about what the main character went through during WW11. Those were terrible rime for everyone. We have fought more wars since that time, but the American people at that time came together better than ib aby period of our history.
An excellent historical retrospective with an incredible look “inside the war” in the waning days of the Pacific War. A terrific tribute to “The Last Fighter Pilot”.
Well written story by the ace who flew the last fighter combat mission of WW II … but of course there have been many, many combat missions since then.
Gave me a great insight about what my dad went through on Iwo Jima, which he never would talk about
