With his acclaimed bestsellers, Hostage and Demolition Angel, Robert Crais drew raves for his unstoppable pacing, edgy characterizations, and cinematic prose. Now, Crais returns to his signature character, Los Angeles private investigator Elvis Cole, in a masterful page-turner that probes the meaning of family and the burdens of the past. Elvis Cole is back… Elvis Cole’s relationship … back…
Elvis Cole’s relationship with attorney Lucy Chenier is strained. When she moved from Louisiana to join Elvis in Los Angeles, she never dreamed that violence would so easily touch her life—but then the unthinkable happens. While Lucy is away on business and her ten-year-old son, Ben, is staying with Elvis, Ben disappears without a trace. Desperate to believe that the boy has run away, evidence soon mounts to suggest a much darker scenario.
Joining forces with his enigmatic partner, Joe Pike, Elvis frantically searches for Ben with the help of LAPD Detective Carol Starkey, as Lucy’s wealthy, oil-industry ex-husband attempts to wrest control of the investigation. Amid the maelstrom of personal conflicts, Elvis and Joe are forced to consider a more troubling lead—one indicating that Ben’s disappearance is connected to a terrible, long-held secret from Elvis Cole’s past.
Venturing deep inside a complex psyche, Crais explores Elvis’s need for family—the military that embraced him during a troubled adolescence, his rock-solid partnership with Pike, and his floundering relationship with Lucy—as they race the clock in their search for Ben. The Last Detective is Robert Crais’ richest, most intense tale of suspense yet.

Hard to put this book down.
Robert Crais writes like I want to live. On the edge but with backup friends to get me out of trouble.
Always a great read and always anticipate his next adventure.
Excellent book, love this writer. I was entertained into the wee hours; important now that we are staying home to be safe!
Elvis and Lucy are already having trouble. Lucy thinks Elvis attracts trouble. Then, her son Ben is kidnapped while with Elvis.
Lucy’s ex shows up with a file on Elvis, insinuating that the kidnapping is due to something Elvis did in Vietnam. But, everyone involved was killed except Elvis. How did Richard get the file? Why does he have it? …
This is the first Crais book I read and went back for more.
I enjoyed the story line as well as the main characters, whose interplay is great!
As teen sleuth Skylar Robbins says in THE MYSTERY OF SHADOW HILLS, “Everyone leaves a trace.” Elvis Cole and his fearsome partner Joe Pike leave no stone unturned until they find every last shred of evidence needed to locate his fiancee’s kidnapped son.
One of my all time fav novels.
Anyone who has read this author will truly enjoy this book, anyone who hasn’t will go looking for his others.
Kept my interest through out. I thought the interaction with the unnamed Harry Bosch (?) was interesting!
Well written if a little close to today’s headlines
I fell in love with Elvis Cole when I first read this book, then read the whole series. Great writing, well drawn characters!
Robert Crais is one of my favorite authors. He writes mystery novels by category, but his stories really defy being tucked into neat slots. His dialogue is wonderful, his characters are complex, his plots twist and turn. I’m hard-pressed to choose one of his books that I prefer to another–and I’ve read them all–but The Last Detective is truly …
Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are great characters. Robert Crais navigates his creations through heart-pounding, realistic plots with his amazing writing skills. This time, the young son of Elvis’ current lady-love has been kidnapped while in Elvis’ care. Enter Joe Pike. He takes his accustomed place by Elvis’ side to save the child and bring the …
Love all his books!!
Well written with a good plot as all the Crais books have.
Unexpected conclusion until late in story. Somewhat unrealistic but still interesting.
Love this author. Just discovered him, and I am reading everything he wrote that I can get my hands on. Wonderful.
Nor for me.
Great book. Great Characters.
