This review is for the audio book but applies to the book too.
The last deception is another action packed book and just what you would expect from DV Berkom- Brilliant!!
Leine Basso has just safely completed a mission for SHEN (Stop Human Enslavement Now) and is on her way home but before she can leave she gets a worrying text message from a friend and rushes off to her aid. When the refugee camp in bombed she soon finds herself drawn back into her old life and taking on a Russian General with very high ties to the Russian government. Can she stop a terrorist attack in America? All this leads to lots of action and a great listen.
The narrator is just right for the voice of Leine and helps to bring the story alive. A must read or listen and a great story to add to your collection.
It kept moving and there were very few side trips. Plus I like the fact that a woman can be a merciless assassin.
I found this book tragic in the manner that people are manipulated and lied to in the pursuit of money and power. Frightening in the real sense that this is what our world has become. Reality in fiction.
Excellent. A properly thrilling & well written read
I have bought all the Leine Basso novels because I really enjoy a strong, believable female lead. Every one in the series is a good read, and this is the best yet. It’s extremely well written and seems just as well researched.
It’s also terribly timely, given the current climate (I read this in September 2017). I found myself running the range of emotions – mild terror as I worried for one of my favourite heroines (mild because I had optimism and confidence that the author wouldn’t kill her off just yet!); humour at some of the situations and Leine’s reactions; and just the right level of horror and sorrow at the events of the first couple of chapters. An excellent novel, warranting the description Thriller.
NB My 5star reviews are reserved for books I recommend to friends, know I’ll read again, and buy the author’s entire back catalogue. Often in physical form as well as ebooks. And often as gifts.
4stars are for books that don’t quite make the cut to buying or reading twice – I’ll still recommend them, but am unlikely to buy them as a gift
3stars are for a decently written story, that just isn’t my style.
If anything doesn’t warrant a 3star or more, I won’t post a review.

I received an advance ARC copy from the author for my review and I also purchased it from amazon.com. Something I like to do to support my favorite authors.
With ‘The Last Deception’, D.V. Berkom takes a topic right out of the news, the US/Russia relationship, adds a secondary storyline to it and you just don’t want it to end.
It’s also my co-favorite read so far in 2017, like this one just as much as Ace Atkins ‘The Fallen’ and it would be pretty cool to see Basso end up in Tibbehah County, Mississippi helping Sheriff Quinn Colson chase down some espionage threat.
This was my style of book, love the fast pace, dig the tension filled moments, like all the action drama, full of suspense, your almost on a roller coaster with all the twists and turns, excellent cast of characters and a conclusion that I didn’t see coming.
Leine Basso’s an ex-assissin that works for SHEN, as an operative who rescues victims from human trafficking, who thru hearing of a friend in danger, will stumble on an espionage threat, of course she uses her resources to pursue it and then eliminate the threat.
How can you not like Leine Basso character, she’s superhuman, tough as nails, no fear, can handle any situation, lethal with a gun and protector of the weak, that can’t defend themselves.
The coolest thing with this series, is that Berkom just grabs your attention from the first paragraph, just transposes you into the pages, your right their for all the action, love that she adds new elements to the story, it’s never the same things over and over and be them good or bad, she just vividly brings
her characters to life.
Definitely if you haven’t yet, give her books a try, her Leine Basso character awesome, then you have Kate Jones and she’ll end up being your new favorite author.
I enjoy this series very much
Nice to have a strong female lead.
Great book
Really liked this book. If others in this series are as good, I will be a happy camper.
great read like the series
Hard to put down
This book was real a page turner!!
Just when Leine Basso thinks she can put her old life behind her, she gets a call from a friend who needs her help more than ever. What Leine finds out and is up against is more dangerous than ever, not just for her but the whole world. Can she find a way to stop the danger? Her friend has already been killed, that just upped the annte for Leine, she will not let her friend die in vain. Complex characters and a lot of action in this book. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this story. The review is my own opinion
The Last Deception is a great read! It’s a page turner and you will not want to put it down. I love the strength of Leine Basso, Berkom never disappoints!
Leine Basso had just finished saving a girl from sex traders and was ready to go home. She received an e mail from and old friend in the area to meet and catch up. She said no because she already had a plane ride home. Then she heard about the bombing of a medical hospital and changed her mind. Her friend was so happy to see her but she had to return something to a patient who was recovering from a very serious bullet wound. She would be right back. Then there was a direct hit on the tent her friend went to.
Leine decided to return her things to her mother, then she noticed the last letter on her computer. Now starts a story of adventure, intrigue, mystery, terrorism, kidnapping and arms dealing.
The author, D V Bedroom, packs quite a punch with her heroine, Leine Basso, in this thrill packed adventure. Just don’t start reading at night…you won’t want to stop. I received this story as a gift and am I glad I received it.
Even if you haven’t read the previous Leine Basso books, this one totally works as a stand alone. The characters and story are all very well developed and thus easy to follow! This is a super well paced, powerful story of adventure, friendship, loyalty, intrigue, mystery, terrorism, kidnapping and arms dealing all packed into one fantastic story! This book is captivating from the very first page. If you are into action packed suspense and intrigue that is a non-stop page turner, THIS is JUST the book for you. A real nail-biter through and through, this book has all of the ingredients you would expect from a thriller! DV Berkom has become one of my new favorite authors! Completely recommend.
Thoroughly recommend. I received an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
THE LAST DECEPTION. by D V Berkom a “Leine Basso” series
Leine works for SHEN, another girl has been rescued. Time to go home, when she finds her friend Janice and the field hospital at the refuge camp she works at has been destroyed. Leine makes a detour to the Egyptian border to check on Janice. A stranger, from Russia, politics, and the deeper she gets involved. Will they trust her, in this mass deception. A thrilling book, that readers will want to read and not put down. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion. Sept 20
Leine Basso Is Back!!! The Last Deception, DV Berkom’s latest book in her Leine Basso series. It is… Exciting, Intriguing, Thrilling, Tragic, Frightening, Exhilarating, Thought Provoking. This storyline that keeps the reader guessing. For me, the world was on hold, the pages turned non-stop. Leine Basso, an operative for SHEN, rescues victims of human trafficking. A former assassin. Deception, the reason for changing professions. Now, the reason both ways of life are colliding. U.S. and Russian politics. Terroristic actions. Armed conflicts in the Middle East. SHEN is an important part of her life and who she is. Live-in partner, Santa, an L.A. detective and daughter April are significant to her, and ea book. They are major characters in some. I received this book as an ARC. I am voluntarily posting this review. Fast paced story. Action packed. Realistic. Complex characters. The Last Deception, when fiction meets current issues, headline news and possible scenarios.
