Getting his client off death row could save his career… or make him the next victim. Daniel Pike would rather fight for justice than follow the rules. His unique ability to “connect the dots,” to observe what others do not, has made him the most notorious criminal lawyer in St. Petersburg. But when his courtroom career goes up in smoke, he fears his lifelong purpose is a lost cause. A mysterious … purpose is a lost cause. A mysterious job offer from a secretive boss gives him a second chance but lands him an impossible case with multiple lives at stake…
To protect a young orphan from a horrifying fate, Pike must save the girl’s guardian from a charge of first-degree murder. Dan uses every trick he knows in a high-stakes trial filled with unexpected revelations and breathtaking surprises as he uncovers a trail of deceit from Florida to El Salvador. When blood-soaked threats arrive, Dan realizes that winning the case might be a death sentence for him—and everyone he hoped to protect.
Can Pike protect the girl and get the charges dropped before his race for the truth proves fatal?
The Last Chance Lawyeris a gripping legal thriller. If you like courtroom suspense, page-turning plot twists, and rebel attorneys, then you’ll love William Bernhardt’s riveting drama.

The Last Chance Lawyer is the first of six Daniel Pike legal thrillers. The premise of the series seems to be lifted from the old televisions series, Charlie’s Angels, in that there’s an unseen behind the scenes man with enough money to go to bat for people of his choosing. The characters in this series aren’t particularly deep or compelling, but they are serviceable. Despite lacking somewhat in originality, the story moves along at a good pace, and there are some interesting twists and scenes. All in all, this an easy, undemanding read.
The Last Chance Lawyer is an amazing new series from one of my favorite authors – William Bernhardt. Bernhardt’s writing style captures the tension of a dramatic courtroom setting unlike any other working novelist today. If you enjoy twisty legal dramas you will enjoy this series.
This is a fun read! The MMC is sort of a tool, but the fact that he knows it makes it redeeming, and he’s great at what he does and has interesting opinions … it makes for a very witty feel and some fun sentiments.
This read turned out to be police procedural, court/criminal trial procedural, and a mystery all in one, rolled up with some corruption, and a light shed on trafficking (how it still managed to be humorous with all that going on is impressive now that I think about it).
I was pretty hooked from early in and missed it when I set it down. I will absolutely explore more from this author, looks like I may have myself a new fave! I am stoked to have discovered him through a ChirpBooks promotion!
4 stars.
Note:
I listened to the audiobook and the narrator is great. Good voice, appropriate attitudes throughout. Well done.
A weak story. The author stumbles over himself to be politically correct. The only white person capable of empathy and fair mindedness to minorities is the hero of the book. Just too much to take. On top of that the plot is ridiculous and contrived. I’m sorry I wasted my $0.99 to buy the book that the hours it took to read. If you want a more realistic dynamic between races, try Walter Mosley – especially his earlier works.
Something different than the Kincaid series – a little more on the serious side, but I can still see a little of the same style bleed through.
Great read
I liked this book very much. It certainly held my attention. I didn’t like the main character much in the beginning but as he changed and became a better man, I liked him more and more. I liked the other characters as well. It was just a good story and a good read.
Very unpredictable. Enjoyed it very much.
This book seemed right up my ally, but I could not even get past the first few pages, there was nothing compelling me to continue reading.
Very enjoyable read. Interesting plot, good and believable main character. Hope there are more to come. Nice change from the traditional lawyer book.
A Great Read!
I thought the characters were interesting and the protagonist seemed to mature as the story evolved. The courtroom scenes were gripping.

Good all-round mystery.
