What if?
What if the descendants of the Vikings who settled Greenland and went on to reach North America around the end of the first millennium had stayed?
Five hundred years later, would Christopher Columbus have arrived to the south of an eastern seaboard dotted with centuries old settlements and towns hosting devotees to Thor and Odin?
Might the Norse have gone on to build a nation as … to build a nation as dominant as the United States of our own world?
A thousand years after reaching Greenland, Vinland and Markland, would we still have had two world wars? What might the world look like? Where might the political and religious divides be drawn?
Welcome to Norse America.
At the turn of the first millennium:
Eskil, orphaned in war, but now a man, is leading his followers to found a settlement dedicated to Asgard’s gods in the newly discovered lands in the west. There, after tests, adventures and challenges, he will leave a legacy that will grow to become the strongest nation the world has ever seen.
The Landing is the first book in The United States of Vinland series and is an alternate history that begins the saga with the establishment of the first Markland halls.

A great start to a new series or genre.
Thoroughly enjoyable
Good alt history.
Interesting alternate history that has Vikings settling in North America to escape from their society that is quickly becoming Christian.
Thought provoking
Believable characters
Very fun read!
Not Turtledove, but just as good in less formal prose. Fun and intriguing speculative fiction.
Nice twist on alt history.
Formulaic and predictable.
Interesting alternative history novel, recommended.
Nice
Below mediocre
Very lightweight. Interesting premise, but the story was just meh.
A re-written history that covers both sides.
Tragic events begin the book. Author uses those events for a plausible basis of mans quest to discover new things, adapt to changing environment and exhibit what being a human really is.
What if…it could happen. ….or could’ve happened.
A disappointment.
As a novel of alternate history, this series was very entertaining. The characters were larger than life, and the settings were realistic. Even though the series is a fictional account, it provides the reader a view of Viking life and their voyages of discovery.
I love the concept and story line but I am afraid that the author will get too bogged down in the small personal struggles. Good book and I am reading all of them in the series.
Wasn’t a big fan, took a long time to get where it was going. Somewhat predictable. If you’re interested in Vikings, you might enjoy.
