When Richter was drawn into the greatest virtual reality MMORPG ever created,it seemed like a dream come true… until he found that nightmares walked The Land. He was confronted not only with a life and death struggle, but also with questions … struggle, but also with questions that would define his very soul.
What would YOU do were transported into your favorite video game?
What would YOU do if the gore, adventure and pain became real?
What would YOU do to win?
Richter confronted these questions while an enemy lay savaged and screaming at his feet. His lips pulledback in a blood-streaked smile. The answer was simple.
“Absolutely anything…”
Welcome my friends! Welcome… to THE LAND!

I’d never heard of LitRPG before I picked up this book, and while I’ve tried other LitRPG books since this is totally the best I’ve run into. If you’ve never heard of it, LitRPG is a mash-up of RPG gaming and fiction, but not in the “media tie-in sense.” In the ‘characters have a character sheet and level up skills IN THE BOOK’ sense. It is MADNESS and yet it is so much fun. I can’t tell if this book scratches my ‘play a game’ itch, my ‘read a book’ itch, or my ‘do math’ itch, but it definitely goes after my ‘entertains me’ itch with a vengeance. 😀
The main character of this book is a gamer bro who wakes up in an actual MMPORG and has to do quests and figure out the world and level up himself and the town he founds, and it is fantastic fun. He totally is a dude though, so while he’s got a great heart he’s also… you know. A guy. If you’re sensitive to feminist topics, do not go here. Lol. 🙂
But seriously, it’s even got dialogue box graphics, and the main character min-maxes himself and crunches his own stats IN THE STORY and it is just… fantastically silly and epicly fun. I could never *write* a LitRPG novel because you bona fide have to be a game designer, a mathy person, *and* a worldbuilder to pull it off, but boy howdy did I have fun reading one. And the next. All the way to the end of the series…!
Aleron Kong, write faster, plz, thnx <3
I wasn’t initially excited about the idea of “reading a game” rather than playing it, but I am hooked. I am enjoying the story line, the characters and their growth, the action and the suspense. I did not put this down until I finished and I am looking forward to reading the entire series. The only complaint I have is that Richter is not listening to me. I keep trying to warn him and give him suggestions and he just ignores me. 😉
Lit RPG series. So far it’s good. 6 books in and I am still enjoying it
Wow, first book in this genre I’ve read and I LOVED it!
I had never read LITRPG before. Well, this book is so good that if you read it, you’ll be jonesing for the next book in the series.
There are seven books so far, with number right on the way. Can’t wait!
I thought the main character Richter was funny. The base building of the game was easy to follow and true to gaming.
At first glance I thought the game prompts were a distration to the reading experience, but I realized that it was part of the genre. I’m an old D&D player, and I can appreciate what the author is doing. Well done!
As a gamer, I found the approach to fiction in this new genre to be really entertaining! The statistical updates the character receives when completing quests and levels was a new wrinkle that almost made me feel like I’d accomplished a worthwhile task as well, because the character is so well defined and relatable. A fun “starting zone” for a series and I can’t wait to read more. Recommended for anyone who enjoys fiction and role-playing games.
Perhaps it’s because I’ve read so much now but this one isn’t as incredible as some of the others like the Emerilia Series. Definitely fun though
I like this entire series and was happy to come across it. I may be wrong, but this is the first published series by the author and the earlier books show a few issues, but the story is very good and engaging. I would recommend this to anyone interested in LitRPG and game lit.
Thought I’d give a LitRPG title a try and went with Kong’s THE LAND series Book 1. Kong’s strength is world-building and methodical cast development. The supporting cast is introduced naturally and brilliantly without burdening the reader and the next thing you know, you’re along for the ride with Riker and 50+ other characters you feel like you’ve gotten to know as well as if you’d written the book.
Fantastic blend of fantasy, gamer coulture and witty humor. Dr. Kong keeps the action moving at a fantastic pace and mixes in great characters with creative problem solving.
When my husband first suggested LitRPG; I refused. Then I ran out of books from my favorite authors, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try. I was absolutely captivated by the third chapter. Kong is brilliant in his writing style. He’s realistic in a fantasy world. His characters are easy to relate to, while making mistakes. Sometimes large ones. Yet they choose to learn from them to grow the story into one of sheer brilliance. He writes in a way that you truly do feel like you’re playing a game. The Land is a good intro into his unique new world and if you give it a chance, it’ll suck you in too.
Alleron Kong is the founder of LitRPG. With his books about Richter, a human in a foreign world.
The story is compelling, but the tables, especially on a smaller, monochrome, screen, are hard to read. I tend to skip over them when I can.
