Holy crap! Only Christi Caldwell can take a rake/rogue/scoundrel (all rolled into one) with the blackest of hearts and show that there is more to him than meets the eye.
Leo Dunlap, Marquess of Tennyson, is one of the blackest hearted males that I’ve ever read. The things this man has done…wicked indeed. So how can one that so far gone be redeemed? In the very talented hands of Ms. Caldwell and with the love of one very special lady, Chloe Edgerton, a lady who has been through her own special hell.
Each revelation peels away a layer giving insight into the forces that formed Leo’s life while shedding light into the horrors Chloe has herself suffered.
A beautiful story of how events can shape one’s life and how they can choose to drown in them or find a way forward and survive.
A 10+ star read that I have to say is probably my most favorite of Ms. Caldwell’s books.
The second book in this series tells the story of Lady Chloe Edgerton, who was physically abused by her cruel father from age 4 till his death. Chloe is a brave and courageous young woman of 25 who refuses to allow that to define her. Her dream is to help others and never marry and be the property of another man. Leo Dunlop, Marquess of Tennyson, was introduced as a young teenager in the previous series, the book HER DUKE OF SECRETS. A studious young boy, abused by his ‘father’ until his uncle the Duke of Aubrey rescued him. At 18 he is introduced to the BRETHREN, a secret branch of the Home Office to deter harm to England. He dons the persona of a carefree rake and soon that facade takes over completely. Until a chance meeting with Chloe while he investigates his mission. But Leo’s true self, caring, gentle and bookworm, is slowly uncovered by Chloe. Caught in a compromising situation, Chloe is ruined and Leo’s position in the Brethren is threatened – unless he can convince her of a “business” marriage. Chloe has a contract drawn up where she retains her independence – literally and financially – and they marry. Leo’s dilemma is how to complete his mission to flush out a traitor and keep Chloe safe, especially since the more time he spends time with her and knows her, the more he is drawn to her intelligence and goodness. And Chloe get glimpses of the real Leo – caring and not the callous rake Society paints him to be. But there is a traitor within the Brethren who is threatening not only England, but Chloe. Leo is determined to protect her, but Chloe has a mind of her own! Beautiful romance of two damaged souls who learn to be whole again by loving each other!! Thank you Ms Caldwell!!
A very interesting regency love story interwoven with a spy thriller. It has lovely believable characters. Recommend.
Wonderful story that drew me on
Different. Not the usual story line.
After reading The Lady Who Loved Him, I realized that I have been missing out on a wonderful author’s works for quite some time. Ms. Caldwell’s writing really resonated with me and hit all the right buttons. This story, about two broken souls that survived the worst childhoods imaginable, was an emotionally gripping work. I loved the characters, the families, the friends, the intrigue, the passion, and the romance. If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would. I will definitely be reading the other books in this series as well as others written by Christi Caldwell. She rocks.
Loved it! Held your interest
A bit long but entertaining.
Excellent author and a very enjoyable read.
The Lady Who Loved Him by Christi Caldwell
The Brethren Series Book Two
Chloe Edgerton didn’t want to marry and had good reasons for not doing so. She just couldn’t get that through her older, protective brother’s head. So…her she was heading for her sixth season. Trying to escape a dance—everything goes awry.
Leo Dunlap, the Marquess of Tennyson has gained the position as the most wicked rake. And he relished the title. His life was with the Brethren and his role within the organization was being a rake. What more could a man want?
Leo was selfish and only thought of himself. The one time he decides to help someone else…it all goes wrong. Great characters that have bad pasts with their sires and have been effected by those pasts. As always from this author, I enjoyed this story.

,In The Lady Who Loved Him, brought together two people who in their own way were brought up in totally different ways but their outcome was almost if not the same.
You have a hero with secrets of a life of beatings and hatred, but saved partly by changing his outside personality opposite of his true being wanting nothing but to work the job he loves. Then you meet the heroine, who suffered beatings and migraines as she was growing up and being scared then finally making a life for herself except for family intervening in her wanting to be independent.
In this couple, you can feel their pain, their insecurity, through their teasing, laughter, singing a ditty during a family dinner etc. Christi brought tears, of sympathy, tears of laughter, and tears of joy in this book other words she has you glued till the end.
The bit of historical fact with parts fictional brought together a wonderful book to enjoy over and over. Christi Caldwell always brings her character’s to life her stories to live forever in our hearts to want more and more from a wonderful writer.
Can’t wait for her next book…
Lady Chloe the youngest sibling from a large family is the only one who remains unmarried. She has no desire to marry, probably because of her horrible childhood. But her older brother, who has her “best interests” at heart, insists she have another London season. Even knowing she will never agree to a marriage and tie herself to any man, Chloe agrees to keep the family peace.
Lord Leo Tennyson is a rake, reputedly one of the worst in the ton. It’s of no matter that he is incredibly attractive and moves like a cat, or that he has had a nearly infinite number of illicit liaisons, just being in his presence could ruin a young lady. It is during a ton event that Chloe and Leo are thrown together through neither fault of their own, that Chloe is compromised by being caught alone with Leo in front of witnesses. What to do?
Chloe could leave society and attempt to live it down over time, but her options are few. Leo hasn’t ever wanted to marry, but his current circumstances require that he marry Chloe or his life, all he’s worked to achieve will be lost to him. Therefore after much cajoling, Leo convinces Chloe to agree to a “ marriage of convenience”. But could there be more? Do either wish or hope for more?
Certainly there is a heated attraction. It’s burning hot! Leo finds he actually enjoys the company of his new wife. Chloe is learning that there is more to Leo that she had ever imagined. Will the two of the end with a hea of their own or will fate intervene and drag it from their grasp?
The story has an interesting plot, filled with intrigue and action as well as romance. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, a third in this series, and highly recommend it!
Another great novel from Christi Caldwell! I didn’t believe I could come to like Leo but learning his backstory explained a lot. It shows that it is easy to take a person at face value but we don’t know what lies beneath. Chloe is such a strong heroine but the best part is how she came through so much and still had a good heart and love for others. I also liked how Christi didn’t shy away from the terrible things Leo did in the past and how Chloe confronted them head-on. I was sad to reach the last page because I loved this couple so much.
