PRAISE FOR GRETTA MULROONEY’S PREVIOUS NOVELS:
‘Mulrooney has a real gift for dialogue, the words and phrases ring true and make her characters wonderfully real… A tenderly funny and genuinely moving piece. I loved it.’ Fiona Morrow, Time Out
‘A beautifully observed study of reconciliation, Araby makes astute points about conflict and shifting values between generations.’ James Eve, The Times
‘I loved it. It’s such a sweet story, without being in the least sentimental. There are moments when the reader is absolutely there, so acute is this novelist’s ear and eye.’
Margaret Forster
‘All of this is wickedly, sharply amusing. But when they really join the party with an act of meaningless terror, Mulrooney shows how constructive and contagious that situation was. And as Nina slowly takes the sweet-natured Joan as her final victim, Marble Heart proves itself to be an excellent lesson in the difference between cleverness and wisdom.’ The Times

I really enjoyed reading this book, the author kept you guessing from the very start. Very well written
I would have enjoyed this book much more without the ex fiancé plot point.
I liked the character Swift, but I must have been a little distracted reading, because the others were mostly unlikeable. Even the long-lost love of Swift’ life, Ruth. I did enjoy the plot, and the ‘justice due’ the “unlikables.” I will follow more of this authors offerings.
Kept me on the edge throughout the book
I really like Tyrone Swift as a character, and Cedric, too.
thoroughly enjoyed the characters. great read.
Somewhat standard Limey detect; but, while not super page turner, interesting plot and characters. Some super stuid/silly relationship stuff.
What I liked about this book isn’t just that it had all the qualities ticked off above, but that from my perspective it had the proper balance of them. Yes, Tyrone Swift had the personal issues that seem prerequisites of the modern detective but I didn’t feel like these seeped into every page. Yes, the plot involved elements that made it clear the book was part of a series, but they weren’t presented in the invasive way that often occurs. In both cases, you could ignore these elements and the characters and plot stood firmly without them.
I love opening a book that transports you right into it. Swift, a private eye, used to be a cop and has his own moral compass and compassion. I was drawn to Swift, his quiet life, his rowing, the smells and sounds of England.
Florence hires Swift to find her missing stepmother. You meet Florence, her brother Rupert, the politician, and Ronnie, the housekeeper for the missing woman. Swift. You see these people through Swift’s eyes and he is a pretty good judge of character. You see the detailed search for the missing woman, Carmen….a woman not missed by many nor a high priority for the police. You see the life style of the rich, the wannabes, and the down trodden.
Swift is still in love with Ruth, the fiance that left him for another…and still sees her for talk and as a listening board. It seems he can’t break off seeing her even though the relationship can’t go anywhere. Swift has an older gent Cedric renting above him and he has a quiet, respect for Cedric and looks out for him.
Swift is a fully drawn man with a few friends and a need to solve the case. This isn’t just a mystery, but a look into the lives of Carmen, Ronnie, Swift and even Cedric. It is a quiet mystery, absorbing and needs to be read slow to savor all the rich details. You will feel satisfied with the outcome and a bit sad that it is over. And you fret over Swift and his relationship with Ruth. I hope to see more of Swift.
