This is a fascinating romantic story about two gifted people, Julian and Piper, (and a whole lot of others too) who are brought together to an estate where they can live in peace while they learn to get their gifts under control.
Besides the romancing, there is an abduction by a crazed person, some other very unique and novel characters and of course, the very endearing and organizing Julian. Piper, the Healer, is a remarkable character too and I felt myself drawn to both of the main characters.
The story is good and besides the slowish start, an enjoyable and true page-turner which I couldn’t put down. I felt nicely entertained, so if you want something that is different and enjoyable to read, read this book.
I read an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) and my voluntary and unbiased review is recorded above.
The story begins with Viscount Julian Alexander on a dark night in London. He’s given an advertisement for a medium of sorts. The problem here is that Jules can touch something and see the person or persons that have touched it before. Something like that. Anyway, he immediately recognizes the medium from his vision and takes off to go get her. That medium was Lady Piper Scott, the granddaughter of his mentor. As the blurb says, Piper a sort of trouble-maker…or in my opinion a trouble magnet. Well, The last thing Piper’s grandfather said to Jules was that he and Piper were not meant to be together. This is a tough one because the two of them have been madly in love for years now.
Let me give you some background here. Piper’s grandmother was a psychic healer. Because of her powers, her husband made a hobby of looking into people with these different abilities. Sometimes he would even collect the people with said abilities, like he did with the Viscount. Now, the grandfather was killed previous to this book, and Jules had to send Piper off for her own protection. She didn’t like it. Jules also decided to continue her grandfather’s work and creates the ‘League of Lords’. All the characters involved with them have some kind of ability or other that makes them different from everyone else. Piper and Jules spend book constantly nipping at each other. Piper wants him in her life and he is just trying to protect her.
All right, I have a confession to make. I loathe, detest and despise the Victorian Era. Occasionally, I see a book I think I will enjoy regardless of the period because it adds some element I love. Sighs. I did not like this book, but I can honestly say it wasn’t a bad story. It was a good story, lots of things going on…even a happy ending! I just didn’t like flavor if you will. I have not read anything from Ms. Sumner before, but I’m thankful that her books are available in Kindle Unlimited. If you like the Victorian Era then you will probably like this book and series.

3.5 stars
I may just not been in the mood. If you like friends-to-lovers stories with a stuff hero, intrepid heroine and LOTS of mystical plot , then you may like this better than I. For me, it focused too much on the League and the villianous plot, even having scenes from the villian’s POV (which is unfortunately a turn-off for me). You could definitely feel the friendship between Piper and Julian, but it takes a while to really feel the chemistry. Once they give in (or really JULIAN gives in), it does get heated. I imagine Finn and Humphrey will have their own stories, and they were intriguing characters, but I am not sure I will continue.
3 Stars!! It feels like I missed the first couple of chapters. I was so lost with what was happening in the book. Even the ending had me asking ‘what’d I miss’?! It was still an interesting and entertaining story, I just wish it had more details. Julian, the main male character is annoying with his back and forth indecision. Make up your mind man!! Piper, the main female character also annoyed me with her chasing a man that was so against being with her for a nonsensical reason. Other than that, it was a pretty good book and I enjoyed reading it.

The Lady is Trouble is the first book in League of Lords, a paranormal and historical romance series. Known as the Scandalous Scott, Piper Scott is rebellious and daring, and she gets into a lot of mischief. She also has unique paranormal abilities. Piper hasn’t seen Julian, the man she loves and who has sworn to protect her, in a long time. Frustrated and eager to get into the League, after three years of waiting for Julian, Piper decides to take matters into her own hands.
Julian, busy trying to run the Leaque, a place for people with paranormal abilities, is more reserved than Piper and very honorable. He takes his responsibilities seriously and isn’t as rash and impulsive as Piper. That being said, this seemingly opposite pair has been in love with each other for years. Julian wants nothing more than to be with Piper, but he knows it’s impossible. Because of a promise made, Julian, also a paranormal, is determined to protect Piper no matter the consequences while still keeping her at a distance. Her special and powerful abilities put Piper’s life in danger, as other people want to use and exploit her, which makes Julian’s mission even more dangerous.
I haven’t read many historical romances with paranormal elements, and I loved the addition to this book. The characters possess a variety of gifts, including reading people’s auras, having visions, mind reading, and more. I thought it was a unique spin on the story, and it definitely added to the forbidden element of Piper and Julian’s relationship, as they were unsure what would happen if their powers combined.
The chemistry between Julian and Piper is wonderful. I love a slow-building romance, and Piper and Julian bring it. Filled with angst and tension, their desire is palpable even though it takes a long time for them to come together. Julian is a man with a dark past, a past he very much keeps secret, and Piper is forbidden to him. Because of his fears and the promises he made, Julian tries so hard to keep distance between them. However, as they move to his estate in an effort to keep her safe and learn how to control his growing powers, this proves impossible. I liked Julian and Piper. They are both good people, though they are not without flaws. Piper’s impulsivity and rebellious behavior often bordered on immature and dangerous, and Julian’s reserved and closed-off attitude proved frustrating. However, the pair sees past these flaws and love each other unconditionally.
Julian takes his role as protector very seriously and not just with Piper. He is part of the League, and he has created a safe place at his estate where he can shield people like him from society’s judgment. He knows what could happen if people learned of their abilities, and he is committed to protecting them. I think this says a lot about his character much more than his past does.
A unique and compelling historical romance with a paranormal twist, this action-filled book has dynamic protagonists and a steamy love story. The secondary characters are as well-developed and interesting too, and some are really fun and funny! I’m hoping to see more of them in future books in the series. Thanks so much to Tracy Sumner for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. I can’t wait to read the next book!
Start with a very well written Victorian era romance. Then add unwanted and misunderstood paranormal gifts and you’ve got a page Turner of the first water. This was another great story that I didn’t want to end. I truly hope the author creates more novels with these characters. It’s such an unusual setting.
He is protecting her and others like her but she wants him to love her. She takes a risk which makes him mad. He takes her back to his home. What will happen? Will he fall for her? Will everything be at risk if it happens? See how they get on

A wonderful story of misplaced honor, scandalous behavior, and ardent love with a crazy bit of paranormality thrown in for good measure. Great characters and plot. (Rated R). “That willing suspension of disbelief for the moment, which constitutes poetic faith.”~Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
THE LADY IS TROUBLE by Tracy Sumner is the first book in the League of Lords paranormal historical romance series and takes place during Victorian times. Viscount Julian Alexander and Lady Piper Scott are the main characters in this romance. Piper loves Julian and is tired of waiting on him to realize it. Julian is busy protecting outcasts with paranormal abilities and feels he needs to protect Piper including from himself and his abilities as well as those that are coming for her.
This is not a historical fiction novel where you learn much about the history of the period. Piper and Julian eventually become likeable characters, but it takes time and I did not connect with them as much as I wanted to. The book starts slowly and is almost confusing initially. While we learn things about Piper and Julian, they didn’t feel extremely three-dimensional. They both have flaws and virtues, but I felt something was lacking. The secondary characters enhanced the story, but lacked depth as well. The plot twists were not totally unexpected. The scenes flowed well with effective transitions. The descriptions were vivid and gave a clear sense of time and place. There are several steamy scenes in the last part of the novel.
Overall, this was a read that did not live up to my expectations. The story line sounded great, but it fell short for me. However, there are many reviewers that thoroughly enjoyed the book. I plan to give book 2 a chance. 2.5 stars rounded down to 2 stars.
An intriguing beginning to a mysterious series – paranormal and victorian blended together.
I would have liked a little more of the paranormal situations to be explained better – but of course , that’s a minor issue in a good book.
You ought to read this one !
Romance Level: 3.5/5
Steamy Level : 4/5
The Lady is Trouble is an amazing book. As soon as my husband saw it, he said the book was about me. And he wasn’t far off. Piper & I have so much in common. She is determined to do what she wants, when she wants to the frustration of Julian. Adding the paranormal abilities of all the characters adds an amazing twist. I can’t wait to read the others in the series. I would highly recommend this book.
When I read the description of the book I thought this would be just another historical romance. As I started reading I realized it was far from that. This book is about Julian Alexander, a peer of the realm who can see things by touching items. And then there is Lady Piper Scott who can heal just by touching. I was able to read a few chapters but when the author started talking about the occult, I couldn’t read any more. That should have been in the description of the book. I am generally drawn to a book by the cover and then by the description of the book. The description I was given said nothing about gothic, mystic, or occult. If it had I would not have read this book. I liked the interaction of Julian and Piper and this book would have worked as a historical novel without the use of mysticism and the occult.
