From USA Today and Washington Post bestselling author L.J. Shen comes an enemies-to-lovers romance with a twist…
They say your first kiss should be earned.
Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky.
They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred.
Mine were broken before we left church.
They say your heart only beats for one man.
Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end.
I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit.
Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my father’s sins over his head to force me into marriage.
They say that all great love stories have a happy ending.
I, Francesca Rossi, found myself erasing and rewriting mine until the very last chapter.
One kiss.
Two men.
Three lives.
Entwined together.
And somewhere between these two men, I had to find my forever.

The Kiss Thief was hands down one of my most anticipated reads of 2019 and let me just tell you all that this book did not disappoint! L.J. Shen is without a doubt my go to author when I want a story to devour and she certainly had me falling down the rabbit hole with her latest release. This beautifully written story wholeheartedly captivated my heart and left me completely breathless. Even a week after finishing this story I still am at a loss for words and struggling to catch my breath every time I think back to Wolfe and Francesca’s unconventional love story.
If I was asked to describe this story in only one word it would have to be INTENSE! The intensity of this phenomenal tale tightly gripped my heart and had me so close to the edge that I wasn’t sure if I was going to fall off the face of the earth or collapse right where I was standing. Seriously it never eased up and I never did manage to catch my breath, but I don’t care because the emotions and angst I felt while inhaling Wolfe and Francesca’s story was one of the best rollercoaster rides of my entire life. Which is totally to be expected when you dive head first into one of L.J. Shen’s books. Although I have adored every single one of her past releases, this story has got to be her best book yet! This one will forever stay close to my heart and I am so glad it was a story written by one of my favorite authors!
Since I don’t want to give the storyline away I will just say that you all need to drop what you are doing and go one-click this book so hard! I mean it…GO DO IT RIGHT NOW! You will be in for one of the best reading experiences of your life when you read The Kiss Thief by L.J. Shen! Just trust me!
What a way to start the new year with a bang! The Kiss Thief is riddled with angst and emotional twists that made this pulse inducing story unputdownable. With every book I fall more and more in love L.J. Shen.
Senator Wolfe Keaton vengeance leads him into taking his enemies daughter, Francesca Rossi in lawfully wedded matrimony. It’s an unwanted marriage meant to strike at the Rossi patriarch.
Francesca Rossi has dreamed of marrying Angelo Bandini. They both are born from the same stock. However, her life and world were turned upside down when her she’s given to the enemy.
Wolfe and Franesca’s relationship is a battle of wills. It’s fierce, teeth baring but at the same time emotionally charged.
“Maybe I’m the monster. After all, I come out to play at night. But so do you, little one. You’re out in the darkness, too.”
The shroud of darkness envelops their relationship as Wolfe takes on Francesca’s father. Wolfe is out for revenge until his emotions for Francesca come alive. Francesca battles her own emotions, struggling to leave behind her first love, Angelo and her father.
The story tore me apart. I wanted more for Francesca. I wanted right for Wolfe. The painful truth, the emotional twists, the vindictiveness made this story heart rendering. Angst lovers this one is for you! 5 Stars may not be enough for this love story!
Stunning! The Kiss Thief was not at all what I thought it would be, it was way better. The start made me unsure of the direction but as the plot went along it was genius. The mix of fairy tale and modern, old and new and everything in between give this story a spark. Areanged marriege tropes can be fun to explore, tricky too, but well done here. A fantastic top notch start to the reading year. Probably my favorite of the authors to date.
I don’t want to spoil anything it’s way better that way. I just want to say this is my first top read of the yeat. L.J. Shen exceeded my expectations and then some. Well I have to note this story won’t be for everyone. The characters aren’t at all typical and likable, they are a grown taste so to speak. But in a way it mixed things from certain themes I liked and made it more engrossing. Despite the angst factor, that’s fitting of course, it worked so well with the plot.
The big bad Wolfe was nothing like I thought too. Such an intense, harsh, cold, ruthless guy a byproduct of his past. A enigma and quite an anti hero, the author created such interesting characters that contrasted as well secondary characters that played their roles well. The pacing was perfectly done too, it built it up well. I definitely enjoyed and devoured this original, romantic, refreshing and addictive.
This was my first book of 2019 and I’m so glad to start off the year with such a great book. As I’ve started most of my reviews for Shen in the past, you should know by now that she is one of my favorite romance writers ever. Vicious is still to this day my favorite romance read ever, and Vic is the absolute book boyfriend (for me). Shen has such a way with words that leaves you thinking about the characters and stories for long after you finished it. She also has absolutely beautiful prose when it comes to feelings and describing moments, seriously though, I want to get her words framed and plastered all over my house. To begin with, when news of this book first broke out, Shen promised that the book would have “Vicious gritty, dark bite, and a forbidden twist” – I love Vicious so that immediately sold me. I will say in the beginning, I was a little reluctant and worried because of love triangles. I haven’t been a big fan of love triangles, and I always find it’s a tricky area to write because you have things like cheating thrown into the mix as well. The book does tackle this topic and how you can forgive the other person, but also learn to forgive yourself.
The story takes place in Chicago, where a prominent mobster is forced to offer his daughter up to the Senator for an arranged marriage. Francesca is said daughter, and she has been in love with her childhood friend, Angelo, her entire life. On a night when she thinks they will finally kiss, her first kiss is stolen by the Senator, Wolfe Keaton. She is enraged to learn that she is betrothed to this man who stole her first kiss. Wolfe definitely has the same cruelty, brutality, and honesty that I can’t help but love in Vicious. I’m all for the tragic anti-hero trope, and I just knew going into the book that there was so much more than meets the eye with Wolfe. There was a reason for him being closed off and why he was so stuck on destroying Francesca’s father, Arthur. I loved seeing them slowly grow on one another, and break down each others walls. I just loved Wolfe so much as a character because he was ruthless in what he wanted, but he also definitely broken down his own boundaries even when he said he wouldn’t, and it was all for love of another person. I will say one tragic scene in the book definitely pushes boundaries and it’s absolutely heart-wrenching. I get why Wolfe loves Francesca, I do, but for me, I wasn’t the biggest fan of her as a female lead, and perhaps that’s her age showing through. She is strong-willed and determined though, and in that one scene, where she serves Wolfe a slice of humble pie, I just wow. no words can describe what I felt in that singular moment. It absolutely breaks your heart. I really admired her strength in that moment and the strong reservation to go through with what she planned to do to prove her point.
Shen compared love to death in one moment in the text, and I found that passage to be so accurate, because you never know when it’s going to happen and how it’s going to happen. It just creeps up on you, and before you know it, you are in love. It’s both fast and slow for Francesca and Wolfe. In many ways, the book also reminded me of Shen’s other book, Sparrow, with the mafia elements, and how what your family does can affect you later on. I also liked that Francesca’s parents own relationship was a nice juxtaposition against her and Wolfe, with how perceptions can change and what is presented on the outside is not necessarily reflective of what is on the inside. I will say, I expected more based on the blurb with her and Angelo, I thought maybe they had an actual relationship before Wolfe. The book looks at trust as one of the main issues and the characters return to this time and time again. It’s not a beautiful HEA, and it’s twisty, and I really loved that. I loved how both characters were deeply flawed and had to suffer to learn. It just felt more authentic to me because love isn’t always easy, and it takes work. All in all, I found myself unable to put this book down and pushing myself to stay up late to finish it. Vicious is still my favorite, but Wolfe is a close second. This is up there as one of my favorite reads by Shen, and honestly, I feel like her writing gets better with each book? If you haven’t read anything by Shen yet, I would definitely recommend this one as it’s a standalone, and it’s a dark fairy tale that will break your heart and put it back together again.
Seriously, what was there NOT to love about The Kiss Thief?
Without a doubt, this is L.J. Shen’s best work to date.
I was left mesmerized, speechless, and in huge amounts of love with this story. From beginning to end, I was completely hooked. I kept looking for little moments in my busy day where I could sneak in a few TKT chapters. I seriously felt that addicted to this story.
I felt anger so many time. OH MY GOD! There were some serious kindle flinging moments.
I didn’t think it was ever going to happen; I always told myself that Shen’s Vicious would always be my favorite book.
The Kiss Thief completely blew it out of the water.
What started with a stolen kiss, developed into the most crazed, hateful, vengeful, and ultimately loving relationship.
I wish the story didn’t have to end, I wish there were an infinite amount of pages to this amazing story. And, I really wish I could give this book more than the five stars I’m allowed to give.
No names will be given out, I won’t delve into the story more than the little bit I gave.
You just have to pick it up, open the book, and get lost in the pages.
I promise you, it won’t disappoint.
5 Cranky Stars
Who’s afraid of the big bad Wolfe? Apparently, Arthur Rossi is enough to give his only daughter and the sole heir to his fortune to his greatest enemy like she was an asset. In the eyes of Arthur, she was just a pawn even if it was his own daughter.
Francesca Rossi was a mob princess. She was groomed from her childhood to be an obedient wife and baby maker. She wasn’t allowed to go to college or have a job nothing a woman in current society was allowed. She had accepted her fate and centuries old tales in a wooden box determined who she was to marry, and she assumed it would be her childhood friend Angelo Bandini who she harbored a crush on. It’s at a gala she meets Wolfe Keaton. An emotionally stunted man with revenge running through his veins. He stole something from her and that is how he became the kiss thief. The next day she was told she was going to marry Wolfe no questions asked. She raged and mourned her loss. She was going to give Wolfe a fight even if it meant her own comfort and wellbeing. What started as hate slowly grew into something much more.
Wolfe Keaton had a personal vendetta against Arthur Rossi and what better way to slowly dismantle his life and his empire was to take his daughter. He thought Francesca was a spoiled brat and was entirely way too young for him. She is 19 to his 30. He sets out to break her will and her spirit when he learns lurking under all that proper uptight upbringing, she’s in fact a girl with a spine. They butt heads at every turn they push they pull they fight and then they do what comes naturally. He slowly starts to let his walls down and almost when it’s too late.
I was really rooting for Wolfe. I mean I liked Angelo but I thought he wasn’t enough. He was a pushover and naïve. I’m sure in his own way he loved Frankie but it wasn’t like she needed. Francesca and Wolfe were a powder keg and when they ignited holy heck it could light a kindle on fire. I was on the edge of my seat a lot of this book with their constant bickering it was stressful, yet you wanted to know the outcome. When you get to the crux of why her family warred with Wolfe you were finally able to take a deep breath and it flowed from there. I like that they grew as the book progressed. Francesca may have been 19 but in ways she was worlds older and, in some ways, still very much a child. I always know L.J. Shen will take me for a ride and this one didn’t disappoint.
“Falling in love was so tragic.”
I have just been wow’d by LJ Shen – again! The Kiss Thief is an amazing and brilliantly told fairy tale – of sorts. One steeped in family, traditions, expectations and disappointments. No one writes the anti-hero like LJ Shen! Hold onto your hearts (and your panties), the big bad Wolfe has arrived!
“I loathed him. But I also craved him.”
Francesca Rossi was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit. Senator Wolfe Keaton has revenge on his mind. And what better way to get it then by taking the thing most precious to his enemy Arthur Rossi. His weakness. In this case it is his daughter Francesca. She has been off to boarding school for more reasons than a good education. She is the mafia princess to The Outfit. Bred to be a wife. Well versed in etiquette, while maintaining her flawless beauty to be seen as an accessory on the arm of her husband. All of these things while she continues the legacy of the Rossi family with heirs. What better choice to take Rossi down, ruining all that he has, and taking his legacy as well.
“I was born into a gilded cage. It was spacious, but locked, nonetheless.”
“It may have been silly in the 21st century to want to get married at nineteen in an arranged marriage, but in The Outfit, we all bowed to tradition.”
The push and pull. Attraction and chemistry. The story will climb and take you higher and higher. Full of emotion, angst and misunderstandings. There is an age gap between Francesca and Wolfe which makes things complicated at times. An unlikely pairing and yet they got it – they got each other – when they actually communicated.
“Sarcasm is an unbecoming trait on well-bred girls, Miss Rossi.”
Francesca is an amazing and unique heroine. She is sweet, smart, loyal, modest and innocent. Wolfe is stoic, powerful and ruthless. At times he is hard, skeptical, jaded. Their mistakes and misunderstandings cause choices and consequences. At times I was pulling my hair out, full of emotion! My heart was beating in my chest when I knew, I just knew what was coming! (no spoilers) Would she go there??? Would he go there??? Of course! I was devastated! My heart obliviated!
“Kiss-thieving wouldn’t go on my list of gentlemanly things to do, either.”
The Kiss Thief did not disappoint! And on a side note….I loved Francesca and Wolfe’s pet names for each other!
“Your love story was no fairy tale. More like a witch tale. Wicked and real and painful.”

WOW! This one turned out to be so different from what I was expecting, and days later I am still in aw and not sure I have the words to express how much I adored it! The Kiss Thief is an emotional, phenomenal story that kept me in my seat until the last page. The further I got into the story, the better it got and I literally could not put it down I had to keep reading.
Wolfe is the ultimate Alpha! Living up to his name, he sees what he wants and takes it no matter the consequences. He is cold and calculated but underneath that tough exterior we find a man that is damaged and loveable. He is at the top of my all time favorite BBFs.
Francesca, while she seems at first to be a spoiled socialite, we quickly learn that there is so much more to her polished exterior and you can’t help but love her.
The Kissing Thief is an emotionally charged story that is light years different from anything I have read in the past. I loved every second of this one and highly recommend you one-click now!
This is a great story! It was captivating and suspenseful. The plots and its twists made it interesting. I absolutely love books that keep me engrossed and make me read straight through. This was that book!
I have to admit initially I was hesitant about this book for two reasons. First, the concept of arranged marriage, not a fan. The second reason was Francesca’s young age. That to me meant immature behaviors that were going to frustrate me.
After completing the book, I had to laugh because the irony was that, yes, I did get frustrated with the immature behaviors, but they were with HIM, ha! But I found that those behaviors were what made him endearing. I know sounds ridiculous. But as you get to know Wolfe you discover the reasons behind the behaviors and his learning curve as his walls tumble down. Seeing him discover how to handle learning to love for the first time made him vulnerable, and lovable. I especially enjoyed seeing these two characters develop and grow throughout the story. You could say that they came full circle, evolving into the exact opposites from what we were first introduced. Watching their growth was an entertaining journey.
This is my first L.J. Shen book. Now, I can honestly say, it won’t be my last! I enjoyed her story telling. It had a great pace to the story with an intriguing flow that kept me reading and her quips were entertaining for sure! This book is definitely one not to miss!
I read an ARC of this story. My honest and fair review is voluntary.
There are not a lot of books that suck me in and keep me in until the very end. This one did that and left me wishing for more when I came to the end.
I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll just say that the rest of 2019’s books have a lot to live up to if they want to push out TKT as the best book of the year.
I’ve read many other books by this author and I have to say this is rather tame compared to the other books I’ve read. But no less intriguing, no less great, no less nail biting and no less hot. So good I had to go back and reread it before I could write this review. I loved Francescas’s character. She was strong and had a backbone. She was headstrong and was able to go tit for tat with Wolfe. Making her one of my favorite characters. I felt so many emotions while reading this book. It is definitely is one of my favorite reads of all time. – By Vanessa
Omg! I don’t even know where to start. Maybe with, I’ve never been in a fight in my life, but I would go toe to toe with someone for Wolfe Keaton! This book was absolutely EPIC! I worried before it came out that there was no way it could live up to all the hype. But, once again, LJ Shen has proven me wrong in the most spectacular way! I loved Wolfe and Francesca’s story so hard! They both fought through so much in this story. And the writing was both so lush and crisp at the same time! The storyline was a good quick pace. There were times I wanted to throw my Kindle across the room and times I was hugging it like my best friend. Everyone needs to read this absolutely perfect romance from LJ Shen!
I don’t want to say too much about The Kiss Thief, I want you as a reader to feel all the emotions that I did with this story. LJ Shen captured me right from the start. I was so captivated by the characters that I could not pay attention to anything around me. I was torn by two men, I fell in love with one while loathing the other. My heart went out to Francesca Rossi her heart desired her childhood crush Angelo but was stolen by another man, a man who could destroy everything and everyone she loved. My heart felt as if it was a revolving door with how I felt for Senator Wolfe and a wolf he is when it comes to his personality and how ravenous he is when it comes to women and especially one in particular
All I have to say is GRAB IT NOW!!! GET LOST IN THIS POWERFUL ROMANCE OF HATE, BETRAYAL, SECRETS, MISUNDERSTANDINGS, PUSH & PULL, DESIRE, REVENGE AND FALLING IN LOVE. It’s off to a great reading year with The Kiss Thief. It’s absolutely freaking unbelievable. I LOVE IT … LOVE IT, I TELL YOU!
Wow, just wow! This story is everything!
The Kiss Thief has a magical mix of angst, hate, smexiness and a love born from the ashes.
This is a twisted kind of love story, and twisted in the best way. It shows how the different types of love can define and mold you.
Wolfe is a character you are going to love to hate, he is a complete product of his upbringing and his history. Then, I promise, you are going to hate not to love him. He is going to make you run the whole gamut of emotions before you finish this story. He has got to be one of my favorite characters that Ms. Shen has ever written!
Francesca is such a misunderstood woman. Which is such a detriment to everyone who knows her. She is selfless, she is strong and she is worthy of the love that should be given to her. She has a bit of naivety that makes her all the more endearing. But she is also strong in her beliefs and that can help or hurt her.
The battle between Wolfe and Francesca is beautiful, it’s heart wrenching and you will not be able to put it down! Their relationship is not pretty, it’s messy and hurtful, but at its heart, it is beautiful and strong.
If you haven’t read Ms. Shen before, this story is a perfect introduction to her and the stories she writes!
The Kiss Thief is Wolfe Keaton and Francesca Rossi’s story. Francesca thought she was going to marry Angelo Bandini. She has known him all her life. They were childhood playmates. She never thought she would love anyone else.
Francesca’s father just gave her away to Wolfe. She has no choice in the matter. After-all she is the dutiful daughter.
Wolfe is the big bad wolf and he is going to eat Francesca up or so he thinks. I think he met his match!
This is a story of revenge and I highly enjoyed reading The Kiss Thief and I couldn’t put this book down! 4.5 Stars for me.
I haven’t read L.J. Shen before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book. What I got was a roller coaster of emotions. I’m giving this 4.5 out of 5 stars. This review is for an ARC, and reflects my honest opinion.
Just a quick warning, there was some dark stuff in this: violence, some nasty verbal fights, mob dealings, blackmail, etc. I don’t want to give too much away, but if you can’t handle those kinds of things, I suggest you don’t even pick this up. That being said, I did enjoy this one overall. Based on the summary, I was kind of expecting this to play out a little differently. I won’t say how because it might spoil what some other people think going into the book.
This was an age gap, and arranged marriage, book; I enjoy a good age gap romance, but I honestly don’t read many arranged marriage books. I think because I like seeing the courting before the relationship and love come along? However, just because it’s an arranged marriage doesn’t mean it can’t turn into something beautiful! There were so many good lines in this book; I made note of a couple when I posted updates on Goodreads.
I was so conflicted at first by this angsty, intense, yet very pleasurable read. I went from being okay with some characters to hating them, from almost hating some characters to loving them, etc. I thought Francesca was just okay in the beginning, but she grew on me the more I read. She did annoy me sometimes, because she acted younger than 19 in my opinion. But for someone who grew up sheltered, mostly in some foreign country at a prestigious boarding school, and after knowing what she had/hadn’t been through in life, I can forgive her childish behavior.
As for Wolfe, he was an anti-hero through and through. I really wasn’t sure what to make of him as I read. I wanted to slap him sometimes (okay a lot of times), but wow…he blew me away by the end. He’s going on my book boyfriend list for sure. Like all of the sexy scenes were fantastic, and even though these two didn’t like each other in the beginning, their chemistry was still explosive. Angelo was one character I liked at the very beginning of the book, but then I was kind of meh about him with the more pages I read until I just wanted him gone. I liked some of the side characters, especially Sterling.
My emotions were all over the place during this read, and I’ll admit I even cried some. I was not ready for this complex book. I can’t wait to go back and read other books from this author. Be prepared for emotional whiplash if you pick this up!
WOW, where do I even begin with this review? This story was so good I just want to write READ THIS ASAP over and over again. The Kiss Thief was so much more than I expected, Midnight Blue was my all time favorite book from LJ Shen, but TKT just beat MB for me. This book was more than amazing, it was pure PERFECTING.
Francesca was such a strong, fierce, beautiful, sweet, and sassy lady. She didn’t let fear rule her, and she didn’t let anyone tell her what to do and feel. She was just so perfect, I love a strong heroin and let me tell you, SHE WAS SUCH A BADA**, she was so fierce and strong. Francesca has met who she believes is the love of her life, she is ready to admit it to everyone and get engaged. So when it is announced that she is going to get married but to someone else, someone else who stole her first kiss, she is not happy at all.
Wolfe knows who he is, what he stands for, and what he wants. What Wolfe wants is power and revenge. So what a better way than getting the one person who he knows will make his revenge sweet and enjoyable. What Wolfe didn’t expect Francesca to be a sassy, beautiful, intelligent, and strong woman. Wolfe might’ve thought he know who Francesca was, but he is about to learn he was very wrong.
This story had me up at 3am crying, laughing, and just swooning like crazy. This was a book that I just didn’t want to finish. It was so good that I reread it the day after I finished it. This book will leave you speechless and so in love with how amazing Francesca is.
Start your 2019 by reading this amazing book, you will love every second of it.
I felt like I’d waited for this book forever and it totally exceeded every expectation! My heart and my mind were battered, bruised, broken and then totally healed in the most epic way. The Kiss Thief starts out as an incredibly interesting page turner, and then BAM…breath gone! It’s anything but a fairytale love story, it’s anything but pretty, but it is breathtaking.
Want to read about a powerful, sexy, alpha male? TKT has that in spades.
Like books with strong, sassy female leads? That would be a check, check!
It’s expected that Francesca and Angelo will be married at some point, as the old traditions of the Chicago Italian Outfit dictate. Francesca has no choices in life, and although, heartbroken that she’d never have a career, she is excited to one day marry Angelo. Excitement brought about from a note that foretells her future, she’s anxious for her first kiss from him, that is until her first kiss was stolen by Senator Wolfe Keaton. Along with the kiss, he also steals her life and her future! A passionate love story full of twists, turns, betrayal, pain, power, and intrigue. An absolute must read!
hat a way to start the year! Wow I must say Shen outdid herself with this story and this cast of characters! Sparrow has ALWAYS been my favorite heroine not just if Shens but pretty much overall! I can say with complete honesty that Francesca has risen to the top and stolen my breathe away!
Wolfe! Everyone is gushing about Wolfe and for good reason because the man is unmistakably gruff, cold and dark but more than that he was a saint among the demons he worked with! I can’t go into further details because you have to experience the infuriating man for yourself! you have to hate him before you can love a man like Wolfe! For me though my heart absolutely loved Francesca!
Francesca is strong in a way that’s hard to explain! Physically she couldn’t hurt a fly but deep inside she had the strength to bring down men three times her size and more powerful than any king! She commands a room but has no clue that she has so much power! She’s kind, considerate and overall has a heart of gold! Even with the dark demons that tried to suffocate her she holds her spirit and remains strong through the storm “I am air” that right there was one of the most powerful statements I have EVER read in a book!
The Kiss Thief
**received an ARC in exchange for an honest review**
The Kiss Thief is the book in 2019 you don’t want to miss. From the beginning you are torn just as Francesca is between Wolfe and Angelo. But soon Wolfe will drawn you in and have you entranced and hoping that somehow these two will defy the odds and figure out how to make it work between them. From the start I couldn’t put this book down. Each page got better and better, and as this became tense, you couldn’t help but hope for a happy ending. The Kiss Thief needs to be on your TBR list today.
Francesca has known her duty since she was little. She is to become a wife of a man from The Outfit and a man her father approves of and she will not have a career. And she thinks she knows who it will be, the one who will kiss her for her first kiss, Angelo. All that changes though when a rude, arrogant man steals that first kiss, Wolfe. From that night on her world is turned upside down and as she fights to be free of Wolfe she might find herself falling for him instead.
Wolfe kisses Francesca as a fluke and now has demanded her hand. What has started as another part of his revenge against her father might backfire on him. Francesca makes him want things he never wanted and she pushes him in ways he doesn’t want to be pushed. But he can’t get her out of his head.
Will they be able to put aside their differences and give one another a chance? Or is the past and their differences too much to overcome? Can Wolfe finally allow someone to get close once more?
