Ranulf Ombrier’s fame throughout England for his skill at swordplay is rivaled only by his notoriety as King Edward I’s favorite killer. Ranulf’s actions have gained him lands, title, and a lasting reputation as a hired butcher. But after years of doing his king’s bidding, he begins to fear for his mortal soul and follows his conscience away from Edward, all the way to the wilds of Wales.
…
Gwenllian of Ruardean, Welsh daughter of a powerful Marcher lord, has every reason to leave Ranulf for dead when one of her men nearly kills him. As a girl she was married by proxy to a man Ranulf murdered, only to become a widow before she ever met her groom. In the years since, she has shunned the life of a lady, instead studying warfare and combat at her mother’s behest. But she has also studied healing and this, with her sense of duty to knightly virtues, leads her to tend to Ranulf’s wounds.
Saving her enemy’s life comes with consequences, and Gwenllian and Ranulf are soon caught up in dangerous intrigue. Forced together by political machinations, they discover a kinship of spirit and a surprising, intense desire. But even hard-won love cannot thrive when loyalties are divided and the winds of rebellion sweep the land.

This book gives a insight as to what things possibly were like during this time in history. I loved reading this and couldn’t put it down.
Exciting, fast moving story . I read it straight thru, unable to lay it down. A great Scottish historical romance.
I read this book from cover to cover, only stopping for restroom breaks and to “nuke” some food. I l.o.v.e.d Gwen and Ranulf. A very, very good book!
I enjoyed this book. The characters were different and it had action. The love story was a good back drop to the story. The history of the region was informative. The concept was solid and it slowly developed to historical fiction with a twist. I would recommend this book.
Reasonably good
A little better than usual highlander ravages the beauty. Good politics and scheming.
This book seemed incredibly historically accurate, particularly given the speech of the characters and their attitudes/culture. Of course there’s always the spirited heroine who doesn’t fit in (in a way that’s NOT accurate or even marginally realistic lol) but in this case she’s know she it and it’s a big secret. I really liked it!
I only made it to 25%, but nothing had happened in the story. I was so disappointed because there were several ‘excellent’ reviews – I had high expectations. I may pick the book up again, but for now I’ve moved on to another.
sorry, but I couldn’t finish it…the h was just too stupid to live. Her tantrums endangered everyone and were not “cute” or reasonable.
Enjoyed the story
Fair. Characters not bad, but plot went back and forth between what was believable and torid.
Characters are uninteresting. The story is predictable.
Interesting storyline. Unique characters. Cannot wait to read the continuation of the story in the next book.
AAaaI love the history as well as the characters.
I enjoyed this book. The heroine was awesome. I would have given 5 stars, except for the part were she runs away. It didn’t make sense and after finishing the book it still doesn’t make sense. But it is still a good read.
Spellbinding.
For once a normal woman – at least in looks! I really enjoyed the way the H &h got to know & respect each other. Really enjoy this author!
I usually don’t read medieval romances (this is actually my first). Well done. I enjoyed the characters.
One of the best, I’ve read it more than once.
This is the First book I read from Ms Kingston. This book hooked me on her writing style.
She has a been a consistent and strong writer.
