He’s a grumpy silver fox who’s about to become a grandfather, and she’s the sunshiny young midwife who wants babies of her own… town—her midwife.
Kerry Humphrey finds her new client’s father…unsettling. He’s tall and brooding and always there, hovering in the background of appointments. And then there’s the crackle of off-limits chemistry every time they’re alone. She hates that, too, but Pine Harbour is a tiny place, and avoiding the young grandfather-to-be in a town of six hundred people and a single Main Street proves impossible.
Everything about their attraction is ill-fated. But it won’t go away.
Fall in love with the Kincaids of Pine Harbor in this sizzling start to a brand-new small town romance series from New York Times Bestselling Author Zoe York.

Owen Kincaid, oldest brother of the Kincaid family, has paid his dues. Married at eighteen, with a baby on the way, he is ready for the bachelor life. Well, he was, until his eighteen year old daughter made her announcement…”Daddy, I’m pregnant”. His daughter Becca is the light of his life and he will always be there for her no matter what. The feelings he has when he meets Becca’s midwife, Kerry Humphrey, has tilted his world again. He had no intention of getting serious with anyone, no intention of being a grandpa this soon and no intention of worrying about anyone but himself after raising Becca and his four younger brothers, but this is life, his life and he accepts the challenge. A truly wonderful and heartwarming story of unexpected moments in life that change the direction of your future. I look forward to the next book in the series! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)c
Holy smokes! Ms. York is a “new to me” author, but after this incredible read, I’m definitely going to be checking out her backlist!
Owen has spent a lifetime as a single dad, raising his daughter and taking on his younger brothers after his parents died. He spent all of his time taking care of their needs and was quickly coming up to the time where everyone is grown and gone; and was anticipating his bachelor life. Life threw in some new challenges for him though…his barely adult daughter becomes pregnant, and her midwife, Kerry, has him rethinking his plans.
I loved how Owen and Kerry fought the emotions until his daughter had the baby to avoid impropriety, but also how they soon started dating after Charlie was born. It was interesting to watch them both review what they thought they wanted for their lives, only to realize they wanted each other more.
5 stars from me!
ARC for honest review with no compensation
Reckless at Heart is book 1 in the Kincaid of Pine Harbour series by Zoe York and totally not what I was expecting…but oh so good!
Owen Kincaid became a father at eighteen, married now divorced, looking forward to being a bachelor after his daughter, Becca graduates in a few months and goes off to college except…the words he hears are not “I been excepted” but “Daddy, I’m pregnant”…history repeating itself, but when he meets her mid-wife Kerry sparks fly…
Kerry Humphrey, mid-wife take on new client Becca but what she doesn’t expect is a hovering, grumpy and all to attractive father and while sparks fly between Kerry and Owen he is off limits to her until after Becca is no longer in her care.
Such true to life story, responsibilities, decisions, chemistry and life changing experiences are just part of what happens in this book…
Emotionally thrilling, sexy, fun and action packed romantic adventure. Really enjoyed this exciting adventure filled with interesting and engaging charters, witty dialog and undeniable passion.
In the last two and a half years I have come to love how Zoe York tells hot, sexy stories while making you want to know more her characters in the process. I particularly love how she develops her male characters (the Fosters, the Minellis and now the Kincaids) – they are all distinct in what they are like and what they want, yet they are all well nuanced and – deep down – they are all men of great integrity (and humor).
It would be easier to list what is not to like about Owen Kincaid – probably nothing. At the ripe old age of 37 and carrying a heavy family baggage, he’s looking forward to her kid leaving for college in a few months so he can get on with his “Great Bachelor Plan”, and bam! he’s hit with the news of such kid’s pregnancy at 18. Life repeating itself. While forced to stop his countdown clock, he meets a woman whose biological clock has just gone off. Despite their attraction and off the chart chemistry, their paths are not totally aligned, and this makes up for a beautiful journey which Zoe York turns into a captivating story, even when you know what the end is going to be like.
I am so glad Zoe still has four other Kincaid brothers to deal with. Thank heavens for large families!

I really enjoyed this book and especially Owen and Kerry. The story was great, and I really liked watching the Kincaid brothers and how they interact, and I loved Owen coming out of his shell and having some fun. I did appreciate how Owen and his ex, came together to support Becca with what she was going through knowing how they had gone through the same things and wanted better for her. I appreciated the fact that Becca stepped up and took control of things and I am hoping things with Hayden level out. I loved seeing a few of our friends in this story as well. Kerry and Owen were meant for each other and I thought the story was great in watching the friendship build between these two to eventually turning into something more. Looking forward to more of the Kincaid brothers in future stories.
After Owen’s parents died, he not only had to raise his baby girl Becca but his younger brothers as well – all as a young, single Dad! Now that his brothers are grown and Becca is getting ready to leave for college in a few months, he’s almost “free” to enjoy life as a bachelor! That is until Becca gives him some life-changing news that brings his plan to a halt! Kerry is a midwife who recently moved to Pine Harbour, while she finds Own attractive, but he’s too grumpy for her tastes, plus she considers him “off-limits” since he’s her patient Becca’s dad! However, once Becca is no longer her patient, things heat up between them, only to come to an abrupt, but sad end…all because of something Owen did when he was younger. Great read to see what he did and how they over came it. Awesome start to a new series!
Great book. I love this author. The story line is great. I can’t wait for more.
Must read.
I received and ARC for an honest review.
Owen has had a ton of responsibilities in his 30 some years and he feels older than he should because of it. He’s the guy that worries about everyone in his family and their decisions. It’s hard for him to be the fun easy going kind of guy.
Kerry Humphrey brought that out in him. She unexpectedly came into their lives but had to wait until it was appropriate to give in to their desires. They were so good for each other but eventually they found out they were at different places in their lives…..or so they thought.
This was a very sweet, sexy, romantic HEA and well written by Zoe, as usual. I can’t wait to read the rest of the Kincaid brothers stories!!
This is a wonderful beginning to a new series spin-off of Pine Harbour. In this series, we learn more about the Kincaid family. First is Owen ,who we met in a previous Pine Harbour book and Kerry, a midwife. Owen and Kerry have seen each other around town. Owen is attracted to Kerry but doesn’t know how to act toward her so he comes off as gruff and unfriendly. Things are made more difficult when Owen’s 18 year old unmarried daughter tells him she’s pregnant and Kerry becomes her midwife. Becca’s unplanned pregnancy brings up mixed feelings for Owen because of his and Becca’s mother’s situation with Becca. Around that time was when Owen started taking care of his younger brother’s because of their parents’ deaths. Owen and Kerry have a lot to work out between them with their attraction to each other and different life goals. I like how the brothers have each other’s backs and they all come together for Owen,Kerry and Becca. Zoe York writes such great books and I’m looking forward to reading about the rest of the Kincaid brothers. I received an ARC to read early and have my own book now. I’m leaving my honest review.
The first book in the spin-off Kincaids of Pine Harbour Series. A well written story that kept me turning pages. I want to read the next book. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Reckless at Heart, the first book in the spin-off Kincaids of Pine Harbour Series by Zoe York is an amazing story. The oldest Kincaid, Owen grew up way sooner than most. This is his story, how he has reacted to the responsibility placed on his shoulders, how he has missed out on many activities common to most college age, how he planned to live those bachelor days out when his daughter graduated and moved on to college but what happened instead.
In many ways this is a unique story. While told in dual POV, Owen’s and Kerry’s, it is heavy on Owen’s side. Thinking about that, most books I have read are heavier with the lead female side. I appreciated that this is Owen’s perspective and story. I also appreciated the fact that the story progressed at a normal rate. It was a hundred pages in before Owen and Kerry kissed. After they got together it was smoking but the fact that family and staying professional came first told a lot about these characters without the author having to say it. They lived their beliefs and values in the way that they conducted their early relationship once Owen quit being so tongue-tied and grumpy.
The Pine Harbour series is my favorite of Zoe York’s books. Reckless at Heart fits right in even if it a new side to small Canadian town. These are the stories that Ms. York writes best and I enjoy reading the most.
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
5 Stars
Loved returning to the town of Pine Harbour in this spin off from the Pine Harbour series. This new series is off to a fantastic start. A heart warming story with humor, drama, sizzle and steam and a slew of wonderful characters. I loved Owen and Kerry together and the way their relationship evolved. A truly enjoyable read! Looking forward to more of the Kincaids!
Pine Harbour holds a special place in my heart, so I was understandably excited when I heard there was a new series set in this small town. Owens book is the perfect kickoff to the Kincaid brothers’ journeys and honestly, is going to be hard to top.
Reckless at Heart is all about crossroads in life and how the grow and change from where we think we’ll see ourselves when we reach it, to what reality is actually like. Owen thought he’d finally reached the point where his “great bachelor plan” could be put into action. His last 18 years have been spent caring for the daughter he had when he was a teen, so with her presumably off to the next stage in her life, his plan can come to fruition.
But the universe laughs when one makes plans, this time in the form of another teen pregnancy. While Owen vows to be there for Becca, he has to clamp down on his own disappointment. Enter Kerry, a woman who Owen is instantly attracted to…who turns our to be Becca’s midwife! The guy cannot catch a break. Kerry is equally attracted to him, but between his rampant grumpiness, seemingly aimed at Kerry, and the conflict of interest, Owen is off limits. At least at first. But Kerry is at her own crossroads as well, which run parallel to Owen’s, with no intersection in sight.
One of my favorite things about Zoe York’s books, especially the small town romances, is her ability to create characters who live lives that the reader can identify with on a personal level. The woman who was a teen mom, the mom who’s daughter just announced she’s pregnant at 18. While billionaire, CEO and Seal stories are great…and York writes those awesome books, as well…there’s nothing like a story that features everyday people, living their everyday lives, but with that twist that shakes them up.
I loved the interpersonal bonds between father and daughter, brothers, friends and lovers in this story. The dialogue, the humor, the love and the heartbreak flow easily from the pen of one of my very favorite authors. I can’t wait to read more from this family!
Holy cannoli, this book was awesome! I mean, I was probably destined to love it because it has three of my favorite things:
1. A grumpy, growly hero (yes please!)
2. A slow-burn romance (sigh)
3. One of my favorite authors (check!)
Still, it was such a nice start to a new series that feels comfortable since it’s a spin-off of the already beloved Pine Harbour series. I’m still working my way through that series, but this book can be read as a standalone and the presence of a grumpy hero drew me in. Owen is swoon-worthy. I won’t rehash the plot but he blushes every time he’s near Kerry. I mean, how freaking cute! And Kerry is a tough career-woman who won’t let Owen get away with being surly, finally realizing he just has a crush on her. Aw. The “twist moment” felt so realistic and I hurt along with Kerry as realizations washed over her. But they needed to happen to get them to the HEA, which was awesome. Can’t wait to read the next books in the series and I really hope we get a spin-off series with Becca and Hayden as the first book. Maybe Becca urges him to go into the world and play hockey–a “let someone go and if they come back to you, they’re yours” kind of story when they’re older? Oh, man. I’d love to see more of them. Anyway, the book was fantastic and will give you all the feels we need right now in this crazy world. Enjoy the read and the wonderful characters!
Oh my, loved this book! It explores the many trials of life; first love, single parenthood, teenage pregnancy, and forbidden love.
Owen is looking forward to being an empty nester; he’s got a well laid out plan and a list to go with it. That is until his daughter follows in his footsteps and his house is full again. Kerry is new to Pine Harbour, where she is immediately drawn to the brooding EMT Supervisor; until she finds out he is off limits.
Reckless at Heart follows the tumultuous journey of Owen and Kerry as they navigate their way through life’s challenges on the path to true love.
I read an ARC of Reckless at Heart and willingly left this honest review.
This is a great start to a new series, I love the Kincaid brothers. Pine Harbour is a wonderful place and the people are great. Owen had to grow up fast and has had to be a responsible adult, so he is looking forward to his daughter going off to college but his life never goes to plan. Kerry is a midwife who is wanting to start her family. These two are at completely opposite points in their lives but their chemistry is explosive. Their story is sweet, sexy and sad but has a HEA.
Some authors can make their characters so true to life, their “feels” are your feels, what could be mundane you follow with bated breath. Welcome to that story. Oh, how I wish I knew a man as strong and sensitive and sexy as Owen Kincaid, but he also has deep hurts. Or as hard working and selfless as Kerry, but has she put off having her own life too long. When soulmates meet they have to make it work. Even if it takes months, even if it seems impossible, right? Spanning a period of more than a year this book brings us into sexy friends with benefits, devastating heartbreak, and a tear worth HEA. I can’t wait for more from the “Canadian Hemsworths“.
Owen Kincaid a former teen dad is there to support his 18-year-old daughter Becca when she finds out she’s pregnant. His plans for “bachelor life” are put on hold. Being attracted to Becca’s midwife Kerry is also a no-no until the baby is born. I loved the family and friend support and can’t wait for Owen’s three brothers to have their stories told. Great start to a new series. No cliffhanger and HEA. You can’t go wrong with a Zoe York book.
I voluntarily received this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
It’s been a while since I’ve visited Pearl Harbour, yet it seems like no time has passed at all. I guess once emotions are invested there is no turning back. York dishes up a handful of heartache and a heart full of wisdom with Reckless at Heart. Owen and Kerry are about to learn a few valuable lessons that by now each should have known by heart. When a surprise pregnancy rocks his world, single dad, Owen is about to get a crash course in what it means to love and forgive. So grab a few tissues and hold on to your heart, because if your not careful Zoe York could steal it right out of your chest.
