Finn Bell (yep, the main character has the same name as the author) is crippled, both physically and emotionally. He’s come to live in a smugglers cottage just about at the end of civilization. But while he may want to be done with the world, the world isn’t quite done with him.
The story bounces between the present and the ever-more-recent past as the reader watches Finn gain insight into how his life went terribly off the rails, all as he tries to solve a local mystery. Engaging, thought-provoking and humorous at times, this one is not to be missed.
I have never read a book like this before. I loved the premise, the characters, the compassion, and I enjoyed every moment of it.
Great read!
I really liked this book. It was a different story set in a place I have not read much about and it really kept my attention.
It was a great book. Enjoyable to read. The twists and turns lead you in interesting directions. It’s hard to put down.
Did not like it. Didn’t finish it.
Got a little bit too long and preachy. I would recommend though.
I can’t recommend this book. There is a bit of suspense and a twist at the end, but way, way too much idle blather about the protagonist’s struggle with his emotional struggle to be a better person. Very hard to get through.
Some interesting information on Maori culture and traditions, but verbose and repetitive dialog with the protagonist’s therapist had me skipping pages. Grammar ans spelling errors were distracting as well.
Too difficult to stay interested.
Couldn’t even finish it…..
