“My favorite historical novel . . . a superb re-creation of the Battle of Gettysburg, but its real importance is its insight into what the war was about, and what it meant.”—James M. McPherson In the four most bloody and courageous days of our nation’s history, two armies fought for two conflicting dreams. One dreamed of freedom, the other of a way of life. Far more than rifles and bullets were … rifles and bullets were carried into battle. There were memories. There were promises. There was love. And far more than men fell on those Pennsylvania fields. Bright futures, untested innocence, and pristine beauty were also the casualties of war. Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece is unique, sweeping, unforgettable—the dramatic story of the battleground for America’s destiny.

A good overview of the battle of Gettysburg, with both sides being equally represented and truthfully presented.
I have read this book 4 times. Great read about Gettysburg and the characters.
I’ve read this books three times since it’s been released and I never tire reading all of the details. This book is the best for anyone wanting to understand both sides in the Battle of Gettsburg
Possibly the best book I have ever read, in fact I am reading it again right now.
This is absolutely one of the top 5 books I have ever read. Everyone I have told about this book loved it too.
1 of 3 on the Civil War. Worthwhile read.
One of the best of true historical novels, where the author interprets real persons and their motivations during historic events.
Very well written!
I thought this book was a great look into the battle of Gettysburg. I am not very knowledgeable about the civil war in general and found this book to be very insightful. I really enjoyed delving into the possible thought processes of all the players. Very well written. I highly recommend
My Great Grandfather was there. I leaned more about the Generals leading the troops and their placement on the field. I could comment on each army’s leadership but … In the end, too many lives were lost and the Union was preserved.
A great way to understand what went on at Gettysburg. A US Civil War’s aficionado must.
Probably THE definitive novel of the Civil War. A great place to start to see how it all ended…
This book reveals the horror of Gettysburg and the risk taken by Lee to end the Civil War. Big gamble for the south resulting in the eventual defeat of the Confederacy. Full of heroes and courageous individuals who faced incredible danger and in some cases certain death. After reading this novel I am uncertain why Picket’s charge is …
Great book. I would recommend to anyone who is curious about the Civil War. Shaara does an excellent job with character development, and his explanation of the battle with supporting facts makes this historical novel a classic.
This is the best novel on Gettysburg and it’s impact upon the remaining years of the civil war. It is a study of numerous military colleges in our armed services. It is an exceptional read and definitely worth your time.
Best work of historical fiction that I have read.
One of the best books I’ve ever read!!
A good read. The psychological, spiritual development of the characters helped understand more than just the tactical movements of this battle. I highly recommend this book.
One of my favorite books ever.
Outstanding historical fiction. A must read.
