“My favorite historical novel . . . a superb re-creation of the Battle of Gettysburg, but its real importance is its insight into what the war was about, and what it meant.”—James M. McPherson In the four most bloody and courageous days of our nation’s history, two armies fought for two conflicting dreams. One dreamed of freedom, the other of a way of life. Far more than rifles and bullets were … rifles and bullets were carried into battle. There were memories. There were promises. There was love. And far more than men fell on those Pennsylvania fields. Bright futures, untested innocence, and pristine beauty were also the casualties of war. Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece is unique, sweeping, unforgettable—the dramatic story of the battleground for America’s destiny.

The Killer Angels is a superb read for people interested in the Civil War in general, and Gettysburg in particular. The major characters that Shaara follows before and through the battle as well developed and historically accurate. After reading The Killer Angels, I read the autobiographies and rememinces of the major characters (except for Lee …
1st Civil War book I read. Haven’t stopped since (20+ years).
Tremendous story about a pivotal moment in American history.
In Killer Angels, Michael Shaara wrote the definitive novel of the Civil War. He humanized all figures in the novel while staying true to the historical details of the Battle of Gettysburg. Even knowing the outcome, I found it a suspenseful and compelling read. An excellent book, and one that I highly recommend.
One of the best Civil War books ever written.
Best historical novel on the Civil War
Added a lot when I toured Gettysburg, and helped me visualize the battle. Great book!
I love this book! I have read it a few times and now assign it to my high school junior English classes. The script for the movie “Gettysburg,” a great movie in its own right, was taken from this book.
Beautifully written
Brings history to life. Very interating
Great history presented in a readable form. Michael Shaara is a master at giving readers an insight to key characters of this Pennsylvania battlefield that was a turning point of the American Civil War.
One of my favorite Civil War stories!
