The Skimm Reads calls it “a thriller that’s part True Detective, part The Girl On The Train. All parts gripping.”
Husbands and wives. Mothers and daughters. The past and the future.
Secrets bind them. And secrets can destroy them.
The author of Pretty Girls returns with an electrifying, emotionally complex thriller that plunges its fascinating protagonist into the darkest depths of a mystery … plunges its fascinating protagonist into the darkest depths of a mystery that just might destroy him.
With the discovery of a murder at an abandoned construction site, Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is brought in on a case that becomes much more dangerous when the dead man is identified as an ex-cop.
Studying the body, Sara Linton—the GBI’s newest medical examiner and Will’s lover—realizes that the extensive blood loss didn’t belong to the corpse. Sure enough, bloody footprints leading away from the scene indicate there is another victim—a woman—who has vanished . . . and who will die soon if she isn’t found.
Will is already compromised, because the site belongs to the city’s most popular citizen: a wealthy, powerful, and politically connected athlete protected by the world’s most expensive lawyers—a man who’s already gotten away with rape, despite Will’s exhaustive efforts to put him away.
But the worst is yet to come. Evidence soon links Will’s troubled past to the case . . . and the consequences will tear through his life with the force of a tornado, wreaking havoc for Will and everyone around him, including his colleagues, family, friends—and even the suspects he pursues.
Relentlessly suspenseful and furiously paced, peopled with conflicted, fallible characters who leap from the page, The Kept Woman is a seamless blend of twisty police procedural and ingenious psychological thriller — a searing, unforgettable novel of love, loss, and redemption.

Karin Slaughter is my favorite Thriller author. The Grant Country/Will Trent series is just so AMAZING. Karin brings it each and every time. The stories are so intense and has you on the edge of your seat from start until end. The previous book I rated three stars, and I think that was because I wasn’t completely in the mood for a thriller, so I will have to go back and reread. This book was so intense, that I had to read very fast the last quarter of the book because the suspense was killing me. I just needed to know what was going on and what would happen next. I love this book because there is just so much development in both the story and characters. I loved all the information about Angie, because she was still a bit unknown to the readers. In this book you really get to know her, and you’ll even feel bad for her. The Kept Woman was phenomenal and I wish the next book was already released, because I love the characters in this book so much. Sara and Will are just imperfectly perfect together, and I can’t wait to see what they will go up against next.
Couldn’t put it down from the very first page!
This is my first Will Trent’s novel but I will for sure read all the others. Just brilliant
I love this series !
Good read. Kept my interest until the end! Finished in a weekend. Some disturbing parts but would highly recommend.
I don’t think Karin Slaughter has ever written a book that wasn’t good.
Karen Slaughter is one of the best. Can’t put down her books until they are finished
Very good story. I found out after reading this that it is the first book in a series. I will be reading the rest of them. The characters are very real and very flawed
I like Karin character Will Trent and the problems he face being a detective and having dyslexic his on going way that he deals with being a product of the foster care system. In this book he seems to be coming more vocal and adjusting to changing in his routine.
This author ALWAYS puts out in the thriller category! I’ve read ALL of her books and although this isn’t my favorite it’s certainly worth reading. When I review a book I am truly humbled, I haven’t been able to put the ideas I have to paper, yet here I sit audaciously critiquing a well written and accomplished author! Do any of us as readers truly appreciate the effort, imagination and courage of the author? Thank you Ms. Slaughter for another enjoyable ride into the darkness. God forbid anyone of us should ever have to come face to face with it, in my case again! It’s such a release to be able to let it be fantasy! Ms. Slaughter, at times you have made it seem all just a bit too real….looking forward to the next ones! Anxiously waiting for more new material from the great Ms. Slaughter! Thank you!
The book was long and complex, and several times I thought I’d reached the end only to discover there was still a lot left (via e-reader). I didn’t anticipate some of the action, but had figured out some of the relationships.. yet, even those had a twist. Damaged individuals create chaos and there are lots of damaged people in this book! I hadn’t read any of the previous 7 books in this series, but I may go back and catch up on a few!
You can never wrong with a Karen Slaughter book. You want to finish in one reading.
First book I ever read from this author…. definitely out of order, but have read every other book she has written since…
I’m a HUGE Karin Slaughter fan—and love the Will/Sara books. Karin writes blood-stained thrillers with humor. Full of “real” characters. Can’t get enough of her books.
I love Karin Slaughter’s books. Especially the Will Trent series. So I was anxious to read this one. However, if you haven’t been following this series, you will have a hard time keeping up with everything in this book since much of it is about the characters that we have come to know in the previous Will Trent books
When a murder victim is found in an unfinished nightclub, owned by famous sports stars, GBI is called in to investigate. As the body count goes up, the story gets complex and has lots of twists. Slaughter’s writing style flows smoothly, making all her books must reads.
This book goes into a lot of back-story about Angie and Will. Then about how Angie hates Will’s new girlfriend, Sarah, and some of the nasty things Angie does to her. Angie is involved with the current case the Police Department is working on which brings in her past with the department.
If you didn’t know Will was terrific, you might not even like him after reading this book. He wasn’t at his best. Angie was worse than ever. She was one of those characters you love to hate. I can’t wait until she is out of Will’s life completely.
Love this author!
Her novels are always a great read
This is an amazing story in the Will Trent series, it is a fast paced, suspenseful, psychological thriller with conflicted, flawed characters who grab your attention, and a plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat. A twisting story full of spite, secrets, love, loss, and redemption. Angie is such a good non-villain. She is bitter, sadistic, scarred, selfish and the most manipulative character I have come across, but at the same time, as you learn her backstory, you can’t help but feel sorry for her. Will Trent is my favorite character in all of Karin Slaughter’s books; his insecurity and past pulls at your heart but at the same time he has an inner strength and compassion that makes you love him. You really want him and Sara’s relationship to flourish and you wish that Angie would disappear from Trent’s life forever. The narrator does an excellent job of bringing the story to life. Her narration flows flawlessly from one book to the next, helping you easily recognize the characters, feel the emotions, and creates suspense in all the right places. This twisting, suspenseful story ties up some loose ends for previous books, gives you back story and adds depth and understanding to the characters. I would not recommend that it be the first “Will Trent” book you read (even though it is amazing and could be read as a stand-alone) because you really need to know the characters and their pasts in order to get the most from this book. I loved this riveting story that keeps you enthralled right to the end.
Pretty good book. I had trouble keeping all the characters straight in my head, otherwise I enjoyed the story.
This got me hooked on Karin Slaughter. I love her characters!
This book was hard for me to put down but it helped that I had read other books in the series. There were a few twists and I found myself turning back to previous pages to reread. I enjoyed this book and I look forward to her next,
