The Skimm Reads calls it “a thriller that’s part True Detective, part The Girl On The Train. All parts gripping.”
Husbands and wives. Mothers and daughters. The past and the future.
Secrets bind them. And secrets can destroy them.
The author of Pretty Girls returns with an electrifying, emotionally complex thriller that plunges its fascinating protagonist into the darkest depths of a mystery … plunges its fascinating protagonist into the darkest depths of a mystery that just might destroy him.
With the discovery of a murder at an abandoned construction site, Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is brought in on a case that becomes much more dangerous when the dead man is identified as an ex-cop.
Studying the body, Sara Linton—the GBI’s newest medical examiner and Will’s lover—realizes that the extensive blood loss didn’t belong to the corpse. Sure enough, bloody footprints leading away from the scene indicate there is another victim—a woman—who has vanished . . . and who will die soon if she isn’t found.
Will is already compromised, because the site belongs to the city’s most popular citizen: a wealthy, powerful, and politically connected athlete protected by the world’s most expensive lawyers—a man who’s already gotten away with rape, despite Will’s exhaustive efforts to put him away.
But the worst is yet to come. Evidence soon links Will’s troubled past to the case . . . and the consequences will tear through his life with the force of a tornado, wreaking havoc for Will and everyone around him, including his colleagues, family, friends—and even the suspects he pursues.
Relentlessly suspenseful and furiously paced, peopled with conflicted, fallible characters who leap from the page, The Kept Woman is a seamless blend of twisty police procedural and ingenious psychological thriller — a searing, unforgettable novel of love, loss, and redemption.

This book was such a good read! Highly enjoyed all the characters, the unusual plot. Could not stop reading it. Highly recommend.
Great book! I’m so glad a friend introduced me the books by Karin Slaughter.
Back in April I read the first book in the Will Trent series – Triptych. I already had this one – the eighth book in the series – and decided to go ahead and read it. I really wish now that I hadn’t done that. Yes, I’m sure you can read the books out of order, but I feel like I really missed a lot about Will’s relationships with the people in his life. I’m definitely going to have to watch for the other books and start reading them in the order they were written.
I loved this book. This author has continue to impress me with her attention to details and writing skills. I was pulled right into this story from the beginning. The characters made the story real for me and made me feel as if I was right there with them. This is a story of murder, manipulation, revenge and just suspenseful. The twists and turns had me turning pages fast. It kept me guessing on what happened which kept it engaging and interesting. I highly recommend this book and this author.
I love everything that Slaughter writes!
this book was very hard to put down even tho the end was hard to read. What a convaluted story, I loved it and will read more of Will Trent.
I’m starting this series and loving how realistic the stories are
I enjoyed the read okay but the main detective was too flawed. He was totally ineffective in the solving of the crime and became a hinderance. He is the kind of co worker you don’t make eye contact with for fear of being sucked into his disfunction.
I love Karen Slaughter’s characters. They offer hope to all. The main characters typically have tragic pasts, but are moving forward and finding love and moments of intense happiness.
Great thriller! This author is so dependable – twisty, intense thrillers with great characters. She’s always a 5-star for me.
Anything Karin Slaughter writes, I will read.
Karen Slaughter books are always a good read.
full of characters that you want to know what happens next to them
I had a hard time putting this book down
Karin Slaughter never fails to deliver!
Moved right along, but the writing isn’t particularly interesting.
I love everything Karin slaughter writes
Love all of her books
Great Audio book.
Let me begin by saying this is NOT a standalone book. It is the culmination of all the books in this series that preceded it in defining Will Trent & Angie Polaski’s relationship. It’s complicated and you’ll only understand the extent of that from the earlier stories.
Will Trent and his partner Faith Mitchell are summoned to a murder scene involving a retired police detective. It gets dicey when they realize the warehouse is owned by the agency that represents a professional athlete Will just spent months trying to convict of rape. Then it takes a dive when they determine the blood at the scene doesn’t belong to the dead cop but to someone tied to Will. The ride becomes precarious from then on and never lets up.
I’ve waited for this confrontation between Will and his estranged, crazy wife Angie for a long time and it surpassed anything I could have imagined. I finally understand his bizarre connection to her and, surprisingly, her extreme cruelty to him. Of course, it all is steeped in their shared and unshared pasts. There are revelations on top of revelations and you’ll need to buckle up to keep up. The subterfuge is stunning and there were times my jaw dropped at the truths that emerged.
This story just amazed me. There were moments when I wanted to smack Will and felt like he wasn’t the man I thought him to be, only to embrace him once more. Amanda shows her skills and toughness once again, still leaving me with my competing admiration/disdain of this woman. Kathleen Early narrates it perfectly, knowing how to stay out of the way of the story and giving us perfect characterizations of Angie, Amanda, Will & Sara. The murder mystery was even more complicated but it all ties together at some point. I’m glad I delayed listening to this story now that the next book is scheduled for release next summer. It was so much more than I ever anticipated and was 16 hours of listening that felt like 8.
Karin Slaughter never disappoints. If you have never read one of her books you should begin immediately!
