“Something is murdering my men.”
Thus reads the message received from a German commander stationed in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps. And when an elite Nazi SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve the problem, the men find a something that’s both powerful and terrifying. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated … bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims. Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore — who just happens to be Jewish — to shed some light on the mysterious happenings. And unbeknownst to anyone, there is another visitor on his way — a man who awoke from a nightmare and immediately set out to meet his destiny.
The battle has begun: On one side, the ultimate evil created by man, and on the other… the unthinkable, unstoppable, unknowable terror that man has inevitably awakened.
“The perfect product of a master storyteller…at his endlessly entertaining best” (Horror: 100 Best Books)
It was a top-ten NY Times Bestseller. Paramount adapted it into an incomprehensible film directed by Michael Mann. And now the classic international bestseller is an ebook.

This was the first book I read by F Paul Wilson, it made a lasting impression.
Don’t read this before going to bed! It paints a gruesome picture and unfortunately you start to feel like you’re there. Which is scarrier, the SS or a “vampire,” as they’re both monsters after all. There is also a willful woman who gets herself into breath holding predicaments – like Lucy only not funny! This was a good read but it did keep me up …
I am a HUGE fan of F. Paul Wilson. I read this book years ago (and read it again later on down the road) and was pleasantly surprised when after reading several of his Repairman Jack series to see the connection. If you like scary stories, this one’s for you! In the version I read, just the little blurb at the beginning freaked me out.
The story puts a strange twist to both historical and vampire ( if that’s the right thing). Being set during the Nazi occupation of Europe, can someone stop what the Nazi’s started in a old rundown keep in Romania.
A classic. Probably the third time I’ve read this over the years and it never gets old. Great world building, vivid characters, and excellent pacing. Certainly one book that influenced my writing.
A great book written well and keeps you guessing what will happen next
This is the beginning of The Adversary Cycle, which leads into Repairman Jack. This entire grand saga is my favourite series of novels.
A gripping book with a cool twist to it.
Read this book now. Just trust me on this. One of my favorite books of all time.
I read this book many years ago and it is one of the scariest I’ve ever read. It is about a castle keep where soldiers are stationed during a war. Inside the keep the soldiers find silver embedded in the walls. When they try to remove the silver, all hell breaks loose. I don’t usually reread books but I have this one. Worth the time.
Great Opening, loved the charters , couldn’t put it down
Haunting. Scary
Haven’t read this book for over 20 years, but I really liked it and it’s stayed with me.
Most original horror story I ever read…..one you start it, you can’t put it down and don’t think for a minute if you saw the horrid movie based on the book–that you know what the book is about when the only thing the movie has in common with the book is the title.
Like did the first time I read it and liked it just as much the second time.
I LOVE F. Paul Wilson but I was a Repairman Jack fan, it wasn’t until after reading The Keep and thinking it was terribly creepy and strange, that I then found out while reading Repairman Jack that the author wrote The Keep as well. It’s a weird pastiche of horror and Nazis and a hero who will later turn up in the Repairman Jack books. If you …
What more could you ask for? Nazis and werewolves.
What a story. This author has quite an imagination. Excellent read for a camp fire in the woods!!!!!
