Ken has a gift for capturing atmospheric 1960s West Virginia. I’m a sucker for his stories, and I enjoyed this one immensely. Sins of the past, revenge, secrets long buried, a diabolically clever murderer. It’s all in there. Looking forward to the next one!
This book takes place in 1967 and involves a small town sheriff. A woman gets killed on her front lawn and her husband kills himself when the sheriff arrives. He finds out the woman was having an affair and so was the husband. He tracks down the other woman who turns out is the wife’s sister. She tells him that their mother did not die of natural causes. He gets shot at by a sniper and so does one of his deputies. It turns out there is a murder for hire plot going on. The person who hired the hitman is connected to the town by a local bar owner. The man left town in questionable circumstances. He was a pedophile and he wanted to kill anyone who knew about it.
Lots of characters to keep track of in the story. It all comes together in the end, but so sorry that child abuse is prevalent in society and has such tragic consequences.

Good read with many plot twists
Very slow start, often hard to keep all the characters separate.

Well done mystery and police drama.
A very engaging and one of the best murder thrillers I read in recent times…
Story was good and was well written but for me it was depressing.
This was very intensive reading. A vast array of characters created a lot of action and made reading this book exciting. The truth behind the murders comes out and all ends as it should.
Loved the characters and the twists involved
A little confusing in the beginning as to the relationship between all of the characters and killings
Nice read. Enough mystery and twists to keep it intereesting.
Well-written, original & haunting.
Enjoyed the character development and the twisting plot. A great read.
