Strangely Compelling 4 1/2 Stars…
The author has a way of drawing the reader into a mysterious new world that is right under our noses. The Jracon’s Burden is wonderfully written from the point of view of dragonflies. The concept may seem odd, but believe me once the story gets going it is really hard to put down. The main characters are compelling and likeable in a way that had me eager to continue. This story would be great for young teens but as an adult I was utterly captivated after the first few chapters. If I had to compare this story to anything it would be the movie A Bug’s Life, but with a much more sinister underlying plot. Dax and Yslana’s adventure to save the Citadel and the Odonata from the tainted Hawker Clan and their insidious plans is just getting started by the end of book one. The ending will leave you seating on the edge of your seat wanting more. Not my typical read, but I found that I’m looking forward to the continuation of Dax and Yslana’s story. Happy reading…
Wow the sense of realism in this book is outstanding. The world building and deliverance of the characters were perfection. Proper gritty down to earth characters with storyline that will leave you with your mouth hanging open. Kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.
Very imaginative
Simmons pens a fantastical story in The Jracon’s Burden. I really enjoyed reading this story, and I found the author’s imagination very vivid. Simmons can tell a story and bring the reader into a fantasy and magical world. Dax is a very interesting character and he is on a very taxing and desperate journey to save his world. The world was vibrant and the author is able to show the land and journey, filled with twists and actions. It may be slated for the young adults, but anyone who enjoys a good fantasy book, can and should read this. I look forward to reading more by this author.
I loved the world in all its detail. It wasn’t difficult to keep track of yet detailed enough to make it come alive. I think I caught a few allegories. I enjoyed the story.
Dragonflies?! What a unique idea! It’s a YA book but definitely a great read for adults as well. The author has done an amazing job of making the characters relatable and interesting. Incredible world building and it was described vividly. I recommend this fun, exciting read.
Dragonflies? Why not
This is my first time reading Tom Simmons and certainly a first for dragonflies as well. The author has quite the imagination I must say. The story flowed well and the characters perfect for this fantasy- I loved the names! Very good read.
Intriguing. Different.
I must say, when I saw the lengthy glossary of terms, I was afraid that the book would be too complicated. And I did struggle a bit to get into the story, because at the beginning I had to go back to that glossary time and time again. And it took a little imagination on my part to accept the humanization of dragonflies. But that also made me very curious and soon I got used to it and found myself wandering around in a unique, fantastical dream world. I was swept away. It was intriguing and very different to what I’ve ever read before! I really liked it and appreciate the originality a lot!

With the dragonflies…
It needs some tenacity to read this story. I was a bit afraid by the glossary, which is a bit big. And I had to return to it several times throughout the book. Once you get into the story, it’s a great read. Definitely! It made me curious and amazed as I allowed myself to being drawn into this fascinating, dream world. Jump and you won’t be disappointed.
This was difficult for me to get into as the bug world is just not something I relate to but the author works hard at world building and I began to hear the rubbing of their wings and feel the sultry air. Once I could visualize the world the page-turning picked up. This is a WaterShip Down sort of tale and the character Daz is well drawn. An interesting premise. All kinds of points for the author’s imagination.
Delightful fantasy adventure!
Welcome to the fantasy world of dragonflies.
This entertaining, well written, action packed drama kept me on the edge of my seat. It’s full of suspense, intrigue, unique characters and magic. A great combination. I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading more.
Not sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn’t an alternative world of six legged creatures living in a willow tree. But however stunned I was at the beginning of the story (and I fully admit to being slightly confused by it all and the levels of hierarchy) this epic adventure soon ‘took flight’ in the most spellbinding manner.
Super descriptive and utterly believable, this story is not to be missed. The scenery is spectacular and the darker moments quite frightening. I especially liked the part where Dax was captured and then escaped his foes. I could almost feel his fear and his wings drooping with fatigue.
Altogether a brilliant book. Highly recommend!
The author’s way of describing everything from the cover to the end of the story wowed me, it was incredible! The big world for the little buggies (dragonflies) was stunning. The Jracon’s Burden was well written and enjoyable. I am thankful for the glossary and so will my ten-year-old, when I hand over my kindle to her tomorrow.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes teen fantasy.
Such a dramatic work with plenty of strong visuals and excellent worldbuilding. From the beginning, the reader is pulled into a world of corruption and battle. The idea of a dragonfly society gave it a fresh and unique feeling from other fantasy novels as we follow the main characters on a quest to find themselves in a world designed to destroy them.
This was in interesting fantasy about a dragonfly society. Admittedly, I found having to refer to the glossary in the beginning of the book tedious, but once I understood what word meant what, the story flowed nicely. Very imaginative and entertaining.
