I love the characters and the storyline! It’s a must read!!
First off the cover on this one was so pretty the blue made it stick out. It has also been a minute since reading one of her books but I also have read most of the Brotherhood books. I also delight in having read this one. On the upside Nyx finds some really important clues. I came to really liking her so this was a synch on I knew this was going to more than good. If the characters do not wrap around you I find I will wonder. The things she finds and whom she meets will take us on a adventure you will soon not forget. Also can you say Rhage has a half brother? So once you have dug into this one you will be embroiled so deep when you come out you will have a bit of confusion maybe.
I really enjoyed the plot of this book and like usual, JW Ward delivers a fantastic male character with a deep tragic past that you can’t help but fall in love with. I liked the main girl character too and hoped she found her sister. There were several twists – the main one, I was able to predict and I did feel a bit like Jackal’s situation was repetitive, as if JW Ward has done something similar before, but it was still good and well written. the ending threw out two more twists and I loved them both. the plotline and book overall was sooooo addicting, but I don’t like sex in books; that’s the downfall to JR Ward’s books and why I’m gonna stop reading them. There was too much in this one, so I will stop reading the series for that reason, but if the sex wasn’t apart of it, I would finish the series and be a fan and completely addicted. great writer and good book, other than all the sex scenes.
I just love these stories! We get more of their history. I absolutely loved Jack. He and Nyx had such great chemistry, and despite where he had been for 100 years, he hadn’t lost his gentleness. Their story came full circle!
“Will you let me inside,” he asked against her mouth.
I am so picky when it comes to my paranormal romance books. JR Ward has always been one of my favorites when it come to PNR. The BDB series was one of the first ones that hooked me and never let go. Lately though, it does seem like I have to take each book as it’s own story and not a part of the series. It’s just a feeling but it’s there. I do enjoy these books a lot, but it’s not the same.
The Jackal was different that what I expected, but in a good way. I enjoyed all the characters, new and old. The storyline, chemistry, and everything else was good. The die hard BDB fans might have to suspend that hope that it will feel like the old books and embrace the new normal for the BDB world. It disappoints me too but as long as I don’t go into the books hoping for that I do really enjoy each one that has released lately.
I’m looking forward to seeing where this Prison Camp spin off will take us. I am excited about the new characters that we met here in The Jackal. New and old fans should give this one a go!
Yet there is a male here this eve who has built several constructions in Caldwell and also in New York City and Philadelphia.
I met him. He seems a fine sort, although he has an odd name.”
“What does he go by?”
“The Jackal.”
I enjoyed the romance between the main characters so much….
This was a page turner for me, I couldn’t put this amazing book down and that ending was spectacular.
In this book the heroine is convinced that her sister was accused of a crime that she did not commit, and therefore she infiltrates the prison to find her, and there she meets Jack, who helps her, and then so many things happened that I didn’t see coming…
I loved this book and definitely recommend it.
Love her books. Twists and turns. Great characters and story.
Well, J.R. Ward has done it again! THIS BOOK!!!!! OH. MY. GOSH. I couldn’t put it down! I was on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed how this book took the reader back in time as well as what was happening currently with Nyx and Jack. I enjoyed the intense chemistry between Nyx and Jack, despite the danger surrounding them. The draw between them was palpable through the pages. The danger was intense and the things that unfolded were unexpected! I couldn’t read this book fast enough and I loved how different it was. While the BDB weren’t the main focus, I liked getting glimpses into those that were shown to the reader. It was intense, real (yes, I know there aren’t vampires, but J.R. really makes the reader feel like these characters are real and it could happen!), raw and I loved every minute of it!
The narration was enjoyable, being able to distinguish many of the different characters. I was impressed with Nyx, although she could be annoying. Fifty years after her sister was sent to a hidden prison for killing a man, Nyx gets a clue on how to find the prison. Although she thinks she is so strong and independent, once she is in the maze of the hive she starts to realize she needs some help.
The Jackal was a memorable character, I was taken in by him from the beginning. He is so intelligent, and seems to have a strong moral compass. It was fun to watch him spar with Nyx; she was being unrealistic and he was impressed with her strength but irritated with her lack of trust in him.
I’m looking forward to this new series. I hope to see more of The Jackal and Nyx, but also to followup on where the book left off.
The Jackal by JR Ward is a great start to a new BDB spin off series. Author JR Ward delivers another story enhancing our favorite world.
I loved the backstory we get about the camp and loved reading about Rhage and Darius in the past. Their connection and loyalty stays true to the brotherhood our OG BDB share.
Though it was a little too insta-love for me, I did enjoy the relationship between Nyx and the Jackal. Corruption, power, abuse are rampant in the camp. Nyx is determined to complete her quest despite the odds against her. The Jackal feels a oral urge to help and protect her, regardless of the repercussions. The premise is engaging.
We also meet a new breed of character that has been a long time coming and I’m excited!!
Secrets, lies, and danger made this story intriguing. It did lag a little for me at times. But, a good story and solid start to the spinoff. JR Ward continues to develop and build the BDB world while staying true to the characters we love.
For some reason, I get behind on Ward’s books then read them out of order. Something that I hate doing but it will sound good and I want to read it so…
So when I saw that this one started up a new offshoot of her series I thought I’d give it a try. Boy was I glad that I did. I really enjoy The Jackal and loved him. He’s a new character that’s been introduced to us but he has ties with the brothers. I’m not going to share with who read it for yourself and find out.
Not only do we have new characters to love with also got flashbacks to some of those we already love past. At times the plot gets a bit busy but that’s how Ward rolls. Once or twice I thought, what! but then as I read on I got it.
I also really enjoy Nyx and her quest to free her sister. I think you’ll really enjoy her as a character. Both of them are perfect together even though at times you have to wonder if they’d work. In the end, they do and I hope we see more of them.
The one thing I really love about Ward is her ability to paint a picture in her writing. You feel like you are there with them every step of the way. It really makes for a great story. I can’t wait for the next book in her Black Dagger Brotherhood: Prison Camp series.
The whole series is great!
THIS BOOK! I am so glad that this book is out no! It is so freaking good and while it could totally have been at least 100 more pages it was a great book and gave us an insight to the prison camp that was mentioned in passing in the other books. I do wish that we would have found out more about The Jackal’s past because I want to know why he was called that and what is real name was. I need answers! I loved Nyx and Jackal so much and I cannot wait for the next book!
Loved, loved, loved the young Darius and Rhage. Then Zsadist popping in at the ball covered in lesser blood was so him and we got a bit of Thorment. Knowing Darius was building the brotherhood’s future home was amazing.
Nix and Jack were amazing,I just wish there was more outside of the prison.
Kane, Mayhem and Lucan were interesting secondary characters.
Command’s reveal was mind blowing I actually can’t wait for the next one.
PNR lovers rejoice a new JR Ward book is here
School for my kids began this week and I wanted to read this book, but I also had to multi-task like crazy since I have all of them home. Oh, the new age of reading during a pandemic. Anyways, I got the audible to go along with the e-book since -yeah know -busy mom here. I’ve listened to several BDB audibles so it was no surprise when I found the narrator to be the same as all of the rest. His name is Jim Frangione. I prefer female narrators, but he really is very specific to the BDB series.
When I began reading this series, I found some of it felt wordy, but for some reason, my mind comprehended it much easier with Jim’s hypnotic voice. After I got through the first few chapters that was all but a memory.
The story begins with Nyx a vamp, they’re mostly all vamps, and she is in search of her sister who was falsy imprisoned nearly fifty years ago. Once she infiltrates prison she meets The Jackal or Jack. Jack was a tortured character if I ever read one. Jack’s friends in prison all had kick-ass names and JR Ward really makes you want to find out about all of them.
As with all JR Ward books, she can write some steam and make you appreciate the vamp insta. I love that about her books. I actually find it refreshing-no nonsense- let’s get ready to rumble. Nyx is a bit of a badass and I really appreciate how honest she was as a heroine. Jack on the other hand could’ve probably made his life a little easier if he laid it all out there.
The story does flash to Rhage and this wasn’t my favorite, making this a four for me. While it worked for Alex, I found it to not have the impact I needed. At the beginning of the book, Rhage is getting icecream and he makes it seems like something horribly life-altering is going to happen and then I think the book fell flat with this.
Over-all this book is def worth the read and listen. Going into a JR Ward book, you def know what you’re going to get and she doesn’t disappoint.
Just love it
Interesting the back and forth from past to present, it was a little slow in the details department for a majority of the book. Be patient and when it all comes together then you get the ah ha moments.
The connection between Jack and Nyx is a strong one. I like that she doesn’t back down and neither does he. They fight for who they love.
I kinda loved the ending like so hard.
We also got to know the Wolfen a little which is nice since we have been teased with that for quite a while.
The Prison I knew was going to be a tough book because hello it is a prison underground but phew it was even more intense than I thought in a good and sad way.
I am a huge fan of the narrator no one can do these book like Jim. 🙂
The Jackal is the first book in a spin off series from JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood and the hero of the title is a previously unmentioned half-brother to Rhage of BDB fame. The Jackal is a prisoner, sentenced centuries ago for a crime of which he was innocent & who is being held in a long forgotten underground prison that only holds the worst of the worst and from which there is no escape.
The first thing that caught my attention with this book was the cover. I mean who doesn’t love a bad boy and those blue eyes scream BAD!!! The plot itself is action packed from the beginning. It’s a bit gory in places and I’ll admit to cringing a few times as I read a few parts but after all it is set in a prison for monsters so what else can you expect. At this point I should be saying I loved this book but for some reason I didn’t. I feel that I had to force myself to keep reading it & I don’t know why. I did have a slight niggle with, as far as I can remember, there has been no mention of a half brother for Rhage in any previous BDB book not even as a rumour and then the last few chapters read a bit like a dated Mills & Boon book. Not a book I’ll be in a hurry to re-read.
THE JACKAL is the first instalment in JR Ward’s contemporary, adult PRISON CAMP: BLACK DAGGER LEGACY paranormal, romance series-a companion / spin off to the author’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. This is vampire Jackal ‘Jack’, and Nyxanlis ‘Nyx’ story line. THE JACKAL can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Several of the characters cross-over from the original series for cohesion and familiarity.
Told from several third person perspectives following two timelines and two intersecting paths THE JACKAL focuses on the atrocities of the glymera prison, thought to have been disbanded and disarmed. Nyxanlis aka ‘Nyx’ has been desperate to free her sister Janelle, who was sentenced to the subterranean prison fifty years earlier for the murder of a man for which she had worked. Sneaking into the prison was easy but Nyx never expected to find herself falling in love with a vampire, a prisoner who called himself The Jackal, a man whose own life sentence was questionable and wrong. Working together alongside several vampires and wolven, Nyx and Jack would go in search of information regarding Nyx’s sister only to find themselves facing a potential death sentence when their adventure is discovered.
Meanwhile, the author takes the reader back a century where we get our fist glimpse into the life of the man known as The Jackal, and his initial encounter and association with the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Following a fight with the lessers, an injured Rhage finds himself recovering at the home of one of the Glymera, where he will meet a man, whose face is familiar, but a man who will be falsely accused of a crime against a female vampire. One hundred years will pass before Rhage will get a chance to meet his half-brother, for the second time.
THE JACKAL is a story that focuses on the heart breaking, and unethical conditions of a vampire prison where ‘The Command’ controls with an iron fist. Most of the prisoners has been sentenced for who they are, and not what they have done but at one time the rich and powerful thought they controlled the world of the vampire, and in doing so, sentenced anyone and everyone who got in their way.
JR Ward, once again, pulls the reader into the world of the vampire-a different world than what we have seen with her Black Dagger Brotherhood. The prison camp shows the underbelly of corruption , power and control by the wealthy Glymera, an underbelly I would have thought the BDB should have had some idea still existed. The premise is engaging and captivating-there is a bit of a twist to the story line premise; the characters are energetic and dynamic; the romance is a case of insta-lust to love, a fated relationship that quickly develops in the face of potential discovery and loss.
I’m only knocking a star off because I hate when w get random new characters popping up in a series that we’d never known about before or even had hinted at. Rhage’s half brother, the eponymous Jackal, is one such character.
However, the atmospheric location and all-around creepiness of the glymera’s prison was strong. Nyx has a trail to follow, hopefully leading her to either her sister or someone who knows where she is. Pity, she stumbled into Jackal just as he’s roaming the prison laying his own plans for escape.
The Jackal cannot seem to stop helping Nyx, even when it’s against his own best interest. They keep fighting the attraction between them, and it’s not exactly best time or place for romance or a one-and-done but neither seem to be able to stop themselves.
When Rhage and the rest of the cavalry find out of his brother’s incarceration and the warden’s nefarious deeds, nothing and no one will stop them from cracking the prison wide open!
