When past secrets shatter your present, how do you face your future?
After her dear stepfather has a fatal heart attack, Alicia returns home to the Åland Islands to support her mother, Hilda. She leaves behind a new life with her lover, Patrick, in Stockholm.
But when her lover’s ex, Mia, the daughter of the local property magnate, makes moves to rekindle her relationship with Patrick, … moves to rekindle her relationship with Patrick, Alicia is torn between duty and her own happiness.
Alicia’s hopes of a brighter future are further dashed when deeply buried family secrets surface. How can she forge a new life when everything she believed to be true about her past is a lie?
Meanwhile, Alicia’s best friend, Brit, has her own problems. After a life spent footloose and fancy-free, traveling the world working on cruise ships, she’s both horrified and delighted when she sees the thin pink lines on a test tube. But how can she have a baby with a man she’s only known for a matter of months?
The Island Daughter is the third novel in Helena Halme’s Love on the Island series, but it can also be enjoyed as a standalone read.
Join Alicia’s small island community for another installment in the “captivating” new series set on the most picturesque of Scandinavian islands. Once you enter her world, you’ll never want to leave.

A complex plot with high drama at every turn set in the beautiful Arland islands between Finland and Sweden. Hilda wants to protect her daughter by telling her her father is dead and Alicia only knows the love of Uffa as her father. The complicated relationships between Alicia and Patrick and Mia leave one gasping and wondering where it will lead. Brit’s well meaning interference backfires dramatically and reminds her to keep her nose in her own business which is messy enough at the moment. A wonderfully rich story with lots of twists and turns and upheavals that kept my interest throughout. Helena Halme writes very well. I enjoyed the story very much.
I tried to read this. I got to 11% and I still didn’t care about any of the people. It seems complicated with multiple relationships addressed. I admit, I never got as far as her returning to Aland. I would have left Patrick and his ex-wife Mia sooner. It even seems like it might have been translated from Swedish; it is set in Stockholm and other areas of Sweden mentioned in ways that indicate the reader should be familiar with them. I did scan further to see if I might later get engaged, but no go.
When Alicia returns back home because of the death of her stepfather, she learns that everything she though she knew was lies and her world is turned upside down not to mention that her boyfriend’s ex is trying to get back into his life. The drama will keep you glued to this story and have you n Alicia’s corner to get her chance for happiness for happiness!
Another great story set in the paradisical Asland Islands. Alicia has returned to her home town to help her mom to take care of her father who is ill. When younger, she couldn´t get away from the island fast enough as she wanted to be the owner of her life without anyone interfering or gossiping about it. The very tight community of the island is small and everyone knows everyone but some secrets still manage to remain hidden. Her best friend, Brit, a very independent woman, finds herself at a crossroads and relys on Alicia for support. The characters in this book are very real and very relatable – they can be our next door neighbor or even a friend, that´s what makes the book so enjoyable and easy to read.
As a member of the author´s ARC team I downloaded a free copy of this book and this is my unbiased review.
Alicia and Patrick have been together for a while Patrick got his divorce and he lies to Alicia on several occasions. They moved to Stockholm to be close to his girls and took his old job back and is almost completely happy if he could see his girls more often. Mia is unhappy and she has decided she wants Patrick back and is willing to do anything to get it done. Patrick is gullible and lets Mia pull him in and when Alicia decides to go home and visit her parents she is only supposed to be gone one night but walks into a mess that distracts her from Patrick but she knows something is up when she cannot reach him after tragedy strikes and he abandons her but Liam her ex-husband is there for them. Storyline is good, the characters are very interesting. Very entertaining. Book 3 in this series. I received a copy from Bookfunnel without obligations. I am providing an honest review.
A truly wonderful read. You get all of life’s ups and downs. No pretty glossed over story. I will go back and reread many times. You do not want to miss this book.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Alicia’s life proves realistically messy
4.5stars
This addition to Halme’s Island series is good and real, with love suffering some setbacks for both Alicia and her friends, an unexpected visit from a blast from her mother’s past and major upheaval in the family. This series stands out from many of the books I read because the characters are so real, warts and foibles for all. The prose is easy-to-read and provides a good feel for Aland island scenery and social life.
