As a lover of Celtic Britain, i always enjoy this type of fiction. Boudicca is a very inspirational figure and she is brought to life in this novel. The historical and archaeological sources are fairly sparse, so the author has to create most of her character. Very entertaining and ultimately tragic.
Please note: This review is for the Audible only. I have not read the book although they are both presumably the same storyline.
I really enjoy Audible ‘s. Even more than just the ebook. Since I just had the Audible, I was able to just sit back, okay lie back, and listen to the story. Boudica is an extremely interesting character. Even more so when you realize she real and actually lived through the Roman occupation of Britannia. Boudica’s father was the head of the British Celtic Iceni tribe. Boudica was not you typical young woman. She had been secretly trained by Prasutagus, her future husband, though she didn’t know that at the time. She was the only child of her parents and wanted much more in life than being a wife and mother. She wants to be a warrior.
For awhile, there was peace between the Britannian’s and Romans but there was a brief break, when the Roman leader came to confiscate all the weapons. In this Audible storyline, this occurred shortly before she was married. While this was happening, the Roman leader offended Boudica’s father with the rough treatment of his daughter. The Iceni’s planned to retrieve their weapons from the Roman’s but first he wanted to make sure that Boudica’s futures by marrying her to Prasutagus and acknowledge him as his heir apparent. There was a brief battle, and unfortunately, Boudica father was killed. Boudica’s husband had been designated the next leader and he was and to broker peace with the Roman’s, again.
But will the peace last this time. How does Boudica deal with the constraints on women in the tribe, especially herself. You need to read the book or listen to the book and let your imagination being the tale to life. It’s a fabulous storyline and I want to find out more about Boudica.
I received an Audible ARC to listen to and give an honest review, which this is. The narrator has a wonderful way of being the characters to life.
“The Iron Queen A Novel of Boudica “ by L.D. Goffigan is a tale of courage and defiance of a people ..the Celtic Iceni …in ancient Britannia during the time of the mighty Roman Empire’s conquest of most of the known world. When they fell out of favor with Rome at the death of their leader Boudica’s husband Prasutagus …Boudica was flogged and her daughters despoiled…and her people enslaved by Rome. Boudica’s warlike nature rebelled at such treatment and as the honor and freedom of her people was in peril…she rose to lead them against Rome’s tyrannical might. This is a historical story …rich with detail and descriptions of the brutality of the era involved….but the bravery of the freedom-loving Iceni and Boudica herself …against Roman legions is an engaging depiction of early Britain. A marvelous read. Well Recommended.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
