Don’t miss this New York Times bestselling “impossible to put down” (Buzzfeed) novel with deadly stakes, thrilling twists, and juicy secrets–perfect for fans of One of Us is Lying and Knives Out. Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery … billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why–or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.
To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House where every room bears the old man’s touch–and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he’s determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather’s last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

Loved this! I’ve been reading so much fantasy/sci-fi lately that this was a breath of fresh air. The mystery unfolded expertly, and I found myself turning page after page. I admired the author’s ability to craft such distinct characters, and weave them all into the story in a way that mattered. Can’t wait for the sequel!
I really enjoyed this book! Avery Grambs life looked pretty bleak, she lost her mom, her dad has flaked out and her sister is with a deadbeat boyfriend. At the point when she’s sleeping in her car, an attorney reaches out and advises her to join hearing the will of billionaire Tobias Hawthorne. A very risky gamble, she agrees and goes to the hearing, where she learns that she is the heir instead of the Hawthorne family. Her world explodes as she works through living a new life and figuring out riddles from a deceased billionaire. Riddles leading her and his four grandsons on the chase of what his master plan truly is. This book was so entertaining and keep me on the edge of my seat in finding out how Avery fits in Hawthorne’s final scheme! Definitely check this out!
Thoroughly enjoyed this “Cinderella” story with a twist. The characters were entertaining and the story has tons of twists that will leave you guessing. The description of the mansion itself is worth the read.
Quick out of the gate but falters in the backstretch and never recovers.
I really enjoyed the first half of the book: good characters and good storytelling.
But once the protagonist was living in the house, the story lost steam. (I didn’t care about her wardrobe or her sister’s fingernail polish). I kept reading for a bit, but the plot began to feel more and more manipulated: too much teen angst and gorgeous men following the protagonist around, and not enough believable plot points. (I also couldn’t keep track of which brother was which, so that’s on me.)
When the bodyguard started sewing up a gunshot wound, I could no longer suspend my disbelief. Really? I stopped reading (around 62%).
Your mileage may vary!

Fans of Knives Out–this one is for you! A twisty, turny, can’t-see-what’s-coming-next mystery involving a mysterious heir to a mega fortune and the four (hot) dangerous boys she’s unknowingly kept from their inheritance who will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of their deceased grandfather’s decision. LOVED IT.
I finished this book rather quickly. The chapters are short and tend to end on an interesting note that had me eager to read on. I thought the characters all had an interesting backstory and, despite the ending not being surprising to me, I still enjoyed the read.

17-yr-old Avery Grambs is barely scraping by. After her mom died when she was 15, her older half-sister took her in, but money is very tight and Avery has one more year of school to get through then she has plans, big plans, for herself. All of those plans go out the window when she receives word that she is the sole inheritor of a billionaire’s estate. Why he skipped his own daughters and his four grandsons to pass everything to Avery, she has no idea. She doesn’t even know who Tobias Hawthorne is. In order to inherit though she has to live in Hawthorne House for a year. The problem is, someone is a wee bit upset about the will because suddenly Avery’s life is in danger. A problematic oversight in that contentious document means she needs her security team more than ever now. Trying to solve the eccentric billionaire’s last riddle and find out who is trying to kill her are two problems of many Avery could do without. But she’s been thrown into the deep end and was never one to just give up. Let the race begin.
Who wouldn’t want to inherit a multi-billion dollar estate? It sounds like a fairy tale come true. Until you realize just how much work an estate that ginormous entails. Still, I know I’d be happy to take it on if it meant security for myself and my family and a chance to do real good in the world.
Avery is a unique teenager. Because of how she grew up she is resilient and she’s smart. She’s more than capable of taking on the last riddle of Tobias Hawthorne. And his four grandsons. The question is, which one of the handsome young men will she fall for? Because you know she will. Personally, I don’t like any of them though I like one better than the others and one much less so. I’ll be interested to see how they are in the next book. Avery is a great character. She keeps her head and doesn’t get all flighty. She handles herself well. Her half-sister pisses me off most of the time. However, I like her better by the end. The writing is awesome and the plot is decent. If you’re a fan of riddles (I’m not, but that’s ok) then this is a great book for you. It’s a mystery wrapped in a riddle and tied with a danger bow. Grab it today!
What would you do if a stranger died and left you most of his wealth, which amounted to billions? The one catch being, you would have to live in his family home for one year with his family who believes you are a gold digger.
I discovered The Inheritance Game through The Pigeonhole Book Club and on reading the blurb I thought why not give this a try? I knew nothing about the author, so despite the intriguing blurb I lowered my expectations going into this book, however, the story surprised me. It was better than I expected.
The story pulled me it from the start and held me captive as I followed Avery on her journey as she tried to unravel the many puzzles surrounding her mysterious inheritance. Avery had no clue who the Hawthornes were until the day she discovered she had inherited the bulk of Tobias Hawthorne’s estate worth billions. However, there was one catch she had to reside in the Hawthorne house for one year. It was at this point things became interesting as Avery was caught up in the biggest game of her life while trying to stay one step of ahead of whoever is trying to end her.
Puzzles, riddles, clues and twists were found in every nook and cranny of the House. You never know when you will encounter a riddle or a puzzle, which if solved would take Avery one step closer to the reason Tobias Hawthorne chose her to inherit his billion-dollar fortune.
I enjoyed getting to know each of the characters. What I liked too was the fact you did not know who to trust.
I also had fun exploring the house through Avery’s eyes. Avery was used to playing games with her mom, but it couldn’t compare to what she experienced in the house. However, being a smart girl, she caught on quickly and started solving riddles, sometimes on her own or with the help of her benefactor’s grandsons.
Romance was brewing, which I would not have had a problem with if there was only one love interest. Instead there was a love triangle, which is one of my biggest pet peeves.
A note of warning this is the first book in a series so the questions raised here have yet to be answered, leaving the reader eager for the next book.
Conclusion/Recommendation
The Inheritance Games is a well written young adult mystery which will keep readers on their toes. If you enjoy stories that challenge your mind, then you need to get yourself a copy of this book.
The Inheritance Games is like a cross between The Westing Game and Knives Out. I love the idea of a mystery mansion and all the puzzles within. I’m not usually a fan of love triangles, but the relationships in this novel are secondary to the puzzles. And I admit, I am a bit curious to see where this one leads.
