Brantley Morrison is a drinker of whiskey, a solver of problems, and a collector of mutts; the kind of loyal, hardworking guy you want on your side—and you’d best not get on the wrong side of. Alyssa Walton never meant to find herself on Brant’s bad side—never even met the man until he showed up in her bedroom with a loaded gun and a plan to destroy her. When Alyssa and Brant collide, his simple … Brant collide, his simple problem-solving mission gets a whole lot more complicated. Turns out, Alyssa is nothing like he expected, and she just might be everything he’s ever wanted. Sure, she’s a little afraid of him, but every relationship has its obstacles.
Brant’s never had anyone like Alyssa around, someone loyal and kind who smoothes over his rough edges like she was born to do it. Alyssa’s never met a man like Brant, either, and while she admires the way he looks out for those he loves, she can’t help wondering, who’s looking out for Brant?
Now, faced with wanting the girl he was never supposed to keep, Brant has to make an impossible choice. Does he give up the girl who has brought sunshine into his lonely life, or does he hold on tight, even if it might mean letting down the people he’s spent his whole life protecting?

REVIEW: 3.5-4 STARS
“Some choices can’t be undone and some roles can’t be recast.”
This book was soooo good. So good but with…..a caveat. In all fairness, this one didn’t start out as my favorite, but it quickly became a book I couldn’t put down. I say that because I did put this down TWICE and I walked away, intent on DNF’ing it. This storyline with all its crazy actions literally and figuratively, made NO sense to me. Not one. “I’m conflicted. But I’m hooked.” <-- That's what I kept telling myself while I was reading. But, by the time I was...coerced? totally the wrong word, but by the time I was actually talked through the fact that this is a different side of Sam Mariano and that there were reasons for everything, I continued on. I'm so glad I did but that was a very long and rough initial 30% to get through. With one eye open, squinting at that opening chapter, I knew that I was in for something. Sam Mariano is a shock starter in the beginning - with good intentions. After the first few chapters, I knew she was going to make me say what the f^&k!! So I settled in, and lo and behold - a story surfaced and I was hooked! Was it immediate? Uh, NO. Capital N. Capital O. Not even close. But once I made it a significant way into this book, it unfolded crazily good. Because, make no mistake, this whole story was crazy, right down to the very ending. If you want logical, you might have to look the other way. If you want common sense, that might not be very common. If you want real, this might pass for real - with a side-to-side head wobble or shoulder shake. To be honest, this almost read more like a parody: what not to do when... While this was well written, it made me cringe in some places, but I smiled throughout. Once I got to the crux of the story, I couldn't stop reading - I was hooked. I suppose if I shelved logic, eschewed normality, lived in an alternate universe, this would be a simply laid out love story. But I'm ever so thankful it was not that simple or straightforward. I'm almost sorry I questioned the track I was meandering down when I first started this book, but the reward was definitely mine for the taking. I learned that sometimes it's hard to push aside what I think would be considered "the right way" and realized that I need to make sure I allow myself to live in the author's head as she's telling me a story. This was light and airy for a 'dark read', but it possessed an underlying sense of comedy of sorts. This has cult classic/comedy vibe to it. It’s like a Quentin Tarantino movie in romance book form - but gosh, I really enjoyed it. It had plenty of humor - so go in knowing it's a darkish comedy, but also know that this is where Mariano shines. I was glad I had the option of "phoning a friend" to help me out in the beginning - I was so dumbfounded at first. I had to be reminded that this was Sam in her element. She doesn't write the dictionary definition of normal in a character - and that was my reminder to keep going. Can I recommend it? Will I? Oh, yeah!! Totally. Totally will and happily so. But I also figure, if I can tell you why I had a hard time and why I kept going, you'll understand my rating and review a little better after you've read it. I really, truly did enjoy this book. Mariano is not a "clean" writer and she likes her love stories "messy" - yes, necessary quotation marks utilized. What I mean by that is, her writing floats, it soars, and she's such an easy read, but I love that the love she writes isn't cookie-cutter-clean. There are truths, deep within, and there are realities that aren't in mainstream love stories because not always is the 'disturbed' written about finding love. That is most definitely something Mariano excels at - a messy love. There was almost a coldness - a certain detached voice or emotion present as the scenes originally played out. The fear and emotion on the page was second to the curiosities that caused quite a few eyebrow scrunches from me. It’s almost.....eerie. Brant is ruthless and cold - zero fucks given. Buuuuut......if you make it far enough in, you are rewarded with a crazy love that plays out in the most fantastical of ways. Fitting for Brant and Alyssa, I should say. "You need a therapist. That was meant to scare you, not turn you on." Alyssa definitely showed her age throughout the book and I could appreciate the fact that she was a teenager in every sense of the word - true to her age even. I saw Brant getting caught up in his thoughts of her, which made me fall a little harder for him. But, Alyssa? That girl was fixated. He may have been the voice of reason - in a chaotically paced way, but she put the "crazy" in crazy. Without having a conceptualized understanding of who Brantley was originally, I had a hard time placing him in the role he was playing in the very beginning. But knowing what the synopsis said, I knew I was supposed to meet this hard ass that was hell bent on taking care of a "problem." There were so many variables I had to recognize and accept, but also question as their story unfolded just to try and make sense of it all. There's a reason I follow Sam on every social media outlet I have. She really does write super interesting characters and off the cuff stories that give me a whole new perspective on a love that is so different, but doesn't have any less meaning than the next. I'm usually left thinking harder about how their loved worked instead of why it shouldn't have. "I'd rather be with a man thoroughly intent on keeping me than one who's okay with losing me." ~BEE
Not many Authors can trigger my maniacal laugh quite like this one can!!! A completely unconventional, addictive, mind twisting ride that I couldn’t and didn’t want to put down. Brant was equal parts maddening and hotness, and I didn’t know what to make of him for pretty much the whole book. The banter between he and Alyssa was sharp, on point, and often had me giggling up a storm. I wasn’t sold on her the entire time either, which is what made this story so fun to read, I had no idea what would happen next. It isn’t for the faint of heart, nor if you’re looking for rainbows and roses, you’re not going to find it here. What you will find is a twisted, unexpected, intense, and a complete wild romp where at the end I was in awe at what I inhaled. Dark? yes. Fun? yes. Hot? All the YES!!! Did I fall in love with them completely by the end? YES, and I still don’t know how that happened. Most likely when they both teamed up for the ultimate redemption that had me bouncing and cheering from my reading chair!! An absolute blast to read and I thank the Author for providing a copy to review!!

The Imperfections
By Sam Mariano
Narrated by Aaron Shedlock & Ava Lucas
So, this is my first Sam Mariano book, and when I first started listening to it, I was in shock. The taboo, the forbidden had me wondering, do I go on? Of course I do! I want to know more! Alyssa is an 18 year old who has made some bad choices. As a result of these choices, Brant comes into her life. 17 years her senior with a dark past, he isn’t there to be friends, but there is a desire he feels that he cannot deny. And now as a result, he has to make a choice. Does he keep her in his life or does he destroy those he loves? At first, I did not like Alyssa. No matter the circumstance, no matter her age, I was totally disenchanted….until I got to know her better. It was a forgiveness that just happened. Then there is Brant. He is all alpha protective, broody yet tender and so confused with his feelings, it was easy to love him, even with his darkness. The secondary characters just add more flavor to the story, letting us hate Theo and feel for Brant’s sister. It’s a book easily caught up in, making me cringe at times, wonder why people choose the decisions they do, and take me out of my comfort zone. It’s all encompassing and the perfect diversion.
Aaron Shedlock and Ava Lucas team up to bring this story to life. A better casting could not have been chosen. Shedlock falls into character as Brant. He adds a element to his voice that gives Brant a thread of darkness. Playing the protector, he has an edginess and truly emulates Brant’s personality. Lucas masks her normally sultry voice and gives Alyssa a young innocence with attitude. Her talent amazes me, falling from the young Alyssa to the scorned Bri flawlessly. Their performance enhanced this listen and made me love these characters!

All aboard the crazy train.
What a ride!! Don’t plan on ‘adulting’ while reading this book because you will not want to put it down. Breakfast in bed please.
Brant and Alyssa’s crazy matched each other. They were both twisted and perfect for each other. I love that her sweetness and purity balanced out his Alphaness. I loved their loyalty to each other.
As always, Sam Mariano delivers on all the feels and will leave you in a book funk, mind blown!! It’s amazing how she pulls you into the book and characters and doesn’t let you go. She is and will always be a 1-Click Author.
“The imperfections are my favorite parts.”
I have come to realize that I should never go into one of Sam’s books with any expectations because she blows me out of the water EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Sam’s writing is unique. She touches subjects that some authors refuse to. Her characters aren’t picket fence, clean cut characters. They’re broken and dangerous. They make mistakes. They aren’t always the good guys. Actually.. now that I think about it.. Sam’s characters are never the good guys. But villains need love too.
“This is mine, you understand me? You don’t let anyone else play with it.”
Brant is not your typical Sam hero. I won’t say he is a good, wholesome man who does no wrong because he definitely does, but he is one of Sam’s ‘less crazy’ hero’s. But let’s be honest, nobody is crazier than Mateo Morelli. Anyway, BACK TO BRANT.. This man made me straight swoooooon. God.. his mouth is absolutely filthy. He is not perfect but he is perfect for Alyssa.
Alyssa is a different kind of female character than the typical fierce and bold. Loud and outspoken. Slash your tires for smarting back. No.. Alyssa is the quiet type. But she has fire and her protectiveness is unmatchable.
“You’re very loyal, for an abductee.” “You’re my favorite abductor,”
I won’t ruin anything about the storyline for you guys, but I will say.. this book was not what I was expected. It definitely has that darkness and craziness that we have come to love about Sam’s books. The storyline was absolutely insane but I loved every page of it.
This is what we’ve come to expect from Sam Mariano!
“You’re my favorite abductor.”
Sam never ceases to amaze me with how she can spin the unique and unbelievable story lines that she comes up with in that brilliant mind of hers. Story lines that should NEVER work out. Relationships that are unimaginable in the real world, but totally plausible and realistic within the book world that she’s created. Ones that have me wishing for a happily ever after, no matter how unconventional their relationship is. Stories that she makes BELIEVABLE in the end! THE IMPERFECTIONS was that type of story. Brant & Alyssa were that type of couple. They are PERFECT together.
I think it’s safe to say, I might have an unhealthy love with Sam’s writing. And you know what, I ain’t no quitter, so I will continue to read all her words and embrace this addiction wholeheartedly. I have learned, after all the books I’ve read from Sam (which is a LOT), that every one of them has a level of craziness that cannot be defined or matched. A uniqueness that you just have to welcome with an open mind and heart. You have to have faith that Sam will take you on a journey worth while. A love story worth spending time on. A couple worth rooting for, no matter what. And THIS story was just that. I loved every minute of this epic craziness! I didn’t want it to end! Brant was the right amount of alpha. He was utterly protective and loyal. Alyssa was his perfect match in every sense of the word. She made his lonely world, not so lonely. Their relationship truly came out of nowhere and was unexpected, but was exactly what they each needed. Sam made their characters flawed but their flaws complemented each others, so TOGETHER, they were perfect. “Alyssa is the resin, smooth and colorful and pretty, and I’m the cracked old wood, knotted and split and ugly as hell without the beauty she brings to the table.” -Brant.
The only way I can adequately label this story is by calling it a “dark comedy”. It was a dark romance with comedic undertones. There were parts in the story that I wouldn’t of found funny in any other book, but the way in which Sam wrote THIS story and THESE characters, it made those moments downright comical and had me giggling at times. Not at the ridiculous of it, but at how it worked! How that vibe and that moment WORKED within THIS story line. And I think that’s probably my favorite thing about Sam’s work, she ALWAYS stays true to character in her stories, no matter HOW absurd of outlandish some of their thought processes and/or actions are. She doesn’t stray from WHO they are no matter what. She embraces her characters wholeheartedly and that’s what you need to do with this story. You’ll finish reading and think to yourself, “How did Sam get me to love these characters???” I can tell you that it’s a true gift she has! Idk how she does it, but every time, I love every one of her dysfunctional characters and their turbulent stories!
“You need a counselor,”he informs me. “That was meant to scare you, not turn you on.”
I shrug, grinning at him. “Maybe I’m just the right kind of crazy for you.”
While reading THE IMPERFECTIONS, you have to shut off your moral compass, so to speak. You need to just go with the flow of the story and where the characters are taking it. Trust that they will get you to that HEA that you will so desperately want for them, no matter what their journey looks like. Brant & Alyssa’s story is like no other and neither is their relationship. I adored these two and the craziness! I sure hope to see more from them, maybe in some future spin off books. *begging*
If you’re new to Sam Mariano, give this book a chance! It’s a complete standalone and it showcases who she is as an author.
5 stars
Where do I even begin?! Sam is definitly a trend setter in her writing. This book is unlike any bully book I’ve read before, and I will be reading again and again.
This is an age gap bully romance with lots of obstacles along the way. Sam is not afraid to get her hands dirty with taboo subjects as we have seen with her previous books. Her ability to make even the cringest acts seem almost normal with her characters is true art.
Brant and Alyssa are relationship goals. They both have significant issues, but end up working despite their weird quirks.
If you are on the fence with this one go for it. You won’t be disappointed and laugh along the way
Well well… what a ride I just went on with this book! True to Sam Mariano style, there are triggers in this book. Not going to spell them out but just be warned…
Oh to be young and admired by the dad you are babysitting for. Alyssa just graduated from High school and is currently babysitting to earn money. When lines are crossed, the perfect life isn’t so perfect anymore.
Brant is the rough and tough bar owner who is very protective of his family. Even so of his twin sister. Holy cow what this man will do for his family!!
It’s a messed up situation, a sad one really. But one that happens all the time. I love how Sam Mariano gives us a glimpse of how a family can handle the situation and try to move on.
Because truly, we are all just coasters in life!
As you all know Sam’s heroes are never comfortable – If you’re looking for an all-american hero look somewhere else – but if you like anti-heroes with no real redeeming quality except his love for our heroine dont look further.
Brant is a worthy character to join the Carter and Mateo line-up (even if i admit nobody can top Carter or Mateo for me sorry).
this book is great and full of twist. Even if i was not overly fond of Alyssa for what she did I warmed up to her and her and Brant are not just hot they are scorching.
The story was really good and I’m sure it will pleased all dark romance fans.
I didn’t even read the blurb on this book before I jumped on the opportunity to read it and it was even better than I imagined.
I was in love with Brant at 1% and shortly after I fell in love with Alyssa. He was as alpha as someone can be with his need to own Alyssa and keep her safe. The chemistry between them was on fire. My feels were everywhere throughout this book. My heart was full with the sweetness of a moment then my chest would be aching and a lump would form in my throat because this book had me immersed in the pages and the lives of these people. This is an absolute must read and a top pick of 2019.
Outstanding Story & Narration Riveting & Intense!
The Imperfections A Forbidden Romance
By: Sam Mariano
Narrated by: Aaron Shedlock, Ava Lucas
This is my first book written by Sam Mariano, I love trying out “new to me” authors especially when their book blows my mind with how good it is. She certainly is a gifted author, I enjoyed her writing style and the story and characters she created. The book grabbed my attention right from the start and held it captive straight to the end. The characters are complex and nicely developed, they are easy to connect with and/or relate with. I was not sure how I felt about Alyssa Walton, the lead female, but I wound up adoring her, she was naive in many ways but she was a good hearted person despite the mistakes she makes and the situation she finds herself in. That situation brings her Brantley “Brant” Morrison, I do not think I have ever come across a character like Brant, an alpha all the way, protective of those he loves and will anything for them and I mean anything. Brant can be intense and as you learn more about him you see his dark and twisted mind, he meets his match in Alyssa, she empathizes with him, does not judge him for his actions, does that make her just as twisted and warp minded as him or just a perfect match. This book is cleverly plotted and there is never a dull moment, the secondary characters play a big part of the story, Brent’s twin sister, Bri, and her dirtbag husband, Theo. The story may take you out of your comfort zone at times, but I felt the author did a great job with the dark subject matter and felt she balanced it out with all the other drama giving you so much more. She takes you on an emotional rollercoaster at times, there are some twists and turns, thrilling and suspenseful moments and an unexpected, unplanned romance. Sam Mariano, thank you for this awesome story, I loved all the layers to it and where you took your characters.
I listened to the Audible edition, Aaron Shedlock and Ava Lucas were perfectly casted to bring these characters and their story to life. They did an awesome job portraying the characters, grasping each persona and making the role their own. Aaron Shedlock’s Brant sounded just as I pictured him to sound, an alpha badass who was riding on the edge. Ava Lucas’s Aylssa was spot on too, she allowed you to hear her youthfulness and naivety. You could hear how much heart they put into their work as they captured their characters emotions and projected them into their performance. They are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another outstanding listen

“Not even they can stop me now
Boy, I’ll be flying overhead
Their heavy words can’t bring me down
Boy I’ve been raised from the dead
No one even knows how hard life was
I don’t even think about it now because
I’ve finally found you.”

What’s this book about? (I’m trying to give as little spoilers as possible)
Brantley Morrison fixes things. One day, he must fix a situation that involves getting rid of Alyssa Walton and on that day, something twists inside of him. Both have never met a person like the other and now they might just test what happens when these opposites attract.
This wasn’t my first Sam Mariano book. After my Untouchable read last year, I figured I missed Mariano in my life, so I picked this up on a stroll through KU.
The main man – Brant – was outstanding. Dark, gloomy, mysterious, at times hilarious, but simultaneously loving towards the people that mattered to him. He works the pettiness – I LOVED THAT. At first, I didn’t appreciate Alyssa Walton. Her story was too good to be true and even her flaws were irritating to me. She appeared silly to me because her mistakes were just plain dumb. She was still cute though. However, her chemistry with Brant was incomparable. When they started interacting, I was finally able to cut her a break. When her true intentions shone through, I esteemed her a lot. Whenever she stood up for herself, I was rooting for her even though my loyalty lay with Brant (I’m with the bad guy DUH).
I don’t know if this is a standard in Mariano books, but I love the no filter that some characters portrayed. The steamy scenes were TOP NOTCH. This is Sam Mariano after all. What did you expect? Pumpkin juice?
I definitely enjoyed this forbidden romance read. Brant faced lots of tough choices and he didn’t exactly shimmy himself through them. I loved Brant and Alyssa together; their dynamic was astonishing. I recommend this read to anyone who likes Sam Mariano reads, doesn’t mind cheating, loves forbidden romance and a heavy touch of a brooding mystery main man.
The Imperfections is my second book by this author and I enjoyed it a whole lot. The characters and story grabbed me right from the beginning. I enjoyed reading as the story and characters slowly revealed themselves before me. The story flowed well from beginning to end and definitely kept my interest throughout. I expected to be a bit more surprised by the ending. For me it was a bit predictable, but I enjoyed it just the same. Overall, I’d definitely recommend this book to all.
All the rants about this book and cheating were just as intriguing to me as all the rants about Untouchable and rape.
I enjoyed this story, but I feel like something was missing. Yes, cheating is a big factor, stay away if cheating is a trigger for you. I can understand the mechanics behind the h cheating (I would never excuse it, I just understand), so I don’t judge her for it.
It would be easy to simply judge the h as not being very bright and too naive, but that’s not true for me, she just has a very different mind-set—which I liked while I am not agreeing with it.
I was also under the impression that the H was far more ruthless than he turned out to be. But in the end these traits were some of what made them perfect for each other.
One thing that upset me about it was the naivety in the writing that was sometimes just too much.
I found it at many points throughout the book; too simple, too shallow, but somehow it didn’t annoy me too much, it still worked with the story.
I like the way Sam Mariano doesn’t push feelings at the reader. I enjoy her books a lot, and although this one didn’t dazzle me I think it is totally worth reading.
This book was perfect for me! 5 stars
The way Alyssa and Brant met was unorthodox to say the least (and I will not spoil it), but I was intrigued from the beginning and captivated through this whole book! It felt like a soap opera, and I mean that in the best way because I have watched them for a lot of my life! Alyssa was a loyal person who loves with her heart and soul. She was imperfect, a little crazy and a joy to read! Brant is a loner who has walls up and protective of his family. He was also imperfect and a little crazy! But their brands of crazy and imperfections were perfect for each other and a delight to read! The climax of the story was a little crazy, but that is what I love about a Sam Mariano book! It is usually a crazy, twisty emotional ride (like a soap opera!), and I enjoyed every minute of it. I enjoyed every minute of this perfect-for-me book!
I loved this book! Sam Mariano has a gift for creating characters that are so real. You either love them or hate them and there was plenty of love and hate for the characters of The Imperfections. The plot was fast paced and kept me glued to my Kindle. I will definitely be telling everyone to read this book!
I’m not sure how she does it, but Sam Mariano can take a guy who is totally despicable in the beginning and then bring him on around to the point of love.
And no, it’s not that he’s brainwashed me.
It’s that he was broken to begin with and just hadn’t found someone to put him together.
Brant. Yep. Those early scenes had me in shock. Mouth hanging open, hand over mouth, gasping because OMG DID HE REALLY JUST DO THAT?
And right when you think that, the answer is yes. Yes, he did THAT.
And somehow you’ll love him in the end anyway.
Sam writes depraved and debauched with the best of them. It’s a well established art in her world and her catalog reflects it.
Brant and Alyssa unfortunately fall a bit short of what I’ve come to expect as strong characters from Sam.
The heat is there, the depravity is there. I personally was missing that special something from these two that I’ve treasured so much in the Morelli series and Untouchable.
It’s still a well written steamy, age gap romance with some surprises…..I just had extremely high hopes and this duo didn’t quite meet them.
Y’all just don’t know how long I’ve been trying to get through this bad boy.
NOT IN A BAD WAY!
ARC kindly provided by the author. All thoughts in this review are my own.
So it looks like I’ve been reading this book for over a week but let me tell you about it.
This bad boy landed on my Kindle literally as an anesthesiologist was putting a needle in my hand for an IV to put me under for a dental procedure y’all. LITERALLY.
You know those people that try to count all of the numbers before they succumb to the intravenous drugs? Well I said, let’s see how much I can read before I go out. I made it to page 2 or 3.
That was at 1:00 in the afternoon on a Tuesday and I didn’t wake up until 8:00am on Wednesday, and was still very much out of of it on Wednesday. I left for a 3 day long weekend getaway with just me and my son on Friday and he kept me going until Monday night when we got home. I love my kid. Really…. but I was so sad knows this was on my Kindle just waiting to be devoured. Things finally calmed down enough for me to carve out time and I have done a very good job of ignoring my family on Thanksgiving but I was so freaking invested. I am so happy I finally got to finish this beauty.
So what you’re really here for… the goods on the book. I first read Sam Mariano when Untouchable blew the fuck up at the end of 2018/beginning of 2019. My book bestie said I HAD to read it so it was my first read of 2019 and I fell in love with Sam’s whacked out antihero. So I was expecting much of the same here and she delivered for the most part. But this hero had a different side to his crazy and I ate it up like catnip. So I don’t want to reveal too much because with some authors, going in as blind as possible gives readers the best reading experience and I believe Sam is one of those authors. So very broadly I’ll say, this is age gap. It isn’t all sunshine and flowers. But I was shocked by the tender side to Brant Morrison. When I first started reading, I wasn’t sure if I was going to care much for our heroine, but I really came around on that. She completely won my over not long after my initial feelings. So Brant is fiercely protective of his family and Alyssa has gotten on his radar as a potential problem. And if there’s one thing Brant does, it is solve problems for his family. Does it handle it his traditional way or find a different work around? You’ll have to read to see for yourself. This story felt very fresh to me. It didn’t feel like an author changed some names and a few details and tried to pass a story off as new. I don’t feel like I have met these characters before in any book and their story is THEIR story. There was plenty of the steamy to make my pervy ass very happy. Now, there is a level of fuckedupness that I was living for, personally. Others may shy away from it but if you’re an open minded reader and don’t mind dark then jump on in here… because I was screaming at what was happening and waiting to discuss with my sister in law but also not needing her to know the level of crazy I prefer… she isn’t ready. And she’ll never let me niece borrow books from me in the future.
But I adored this. Loved every single word. I cannot wait to read all of Sam’s words. I’d even order Accidental Witness and they lost it in the mail. I will be telling everyone to pick this shit up and have their minds blown!! Seriously, just read Sam and then come to me and I will tell you who to read next because you’re going to want more and I am your girl!
JUST READ THIS SHIT!!
YOU’RE WELCOME!!
This is my first book from this author and the story had me on the edge of my seat! there’s a lot of twists and turns you will not see coming, but they will, so keep an eye open once you start reading this story!
