“A fast-paced noir thriller. The Ice Maiden deserves a spot at or near the top of your reading list.” –Best ThrillersA serial killer is abducting, torturing, and murdering young women in a small community in central Maine. Seeming to select his victims at random, he acts out the rituals of the Spanish Inquisition before committing their bodies to the sacred waters of nearby Sebec Lake. Anne … sacred waters of nearby Sebec Lake. Anne Quinn, an investigator for the Piscataquis County sheriff’s office, and Detective Douglas Bateman with the Major Crimes Unit of the Maine State Police join forces in tracking him down. Hiding in plain sight, the killer is clearly from the local community and plays a deadly “catch me if you can” game with Quinn and Bateman. He seems determined to humiliate them and demonstrate his superior intellect, leading them to suspect that perhaps there is a deeper motive and purpose behind his string of murders.

I consider it more of a 4 1/2 star book. It kept me interested and guessing right up until the end. However I found the end of the book to be too abrupt.
It’s not really for the squeamish as there are descriptions of the torture deaths of the victims.
This was an extremely disturbing book.
violence against women vividly detailed. Disgusting
Great book a must read!
The local law enforcement must find a twisted killer who mimics the tortures of the Spanish Inquisition.
This is the most scary story I have read in a long time. Lots of twists and turns. Liked the well documented information that made everything validated. Very intelligently written and again, very scary.
This could have been a great book, the basic storyline was intriguing. The writing, however was very immature, for lack of a better word. I found myself skipping whole pages of boring and pointless mediocre descriptions. The resolution was abrupt and spoon fed to the reader via a direct confession from the murderer, vs. being a natural conclusion based on the work of the investigators. The one redeeming feature of the book was the characters, who were likable and interesting.
Well written.
A really good read. For the first in a series, it sets the bar pretty high. I’ll be reading the next installment over the weekend. Talk about dropping a subtle hint that may or may not be a red herring, making you think you know what happens next only to discover it wasn’t – this book does keep you guessing.
Kept me guessing until the very end!!
Grabbed me quickly and kept the pages turning. Wish to read more by this author.
Loved the characters. Now reading the second book. Love it!
Rambled a little in the middle but overall entertaining.
Loved it. Well written characters and plot! Love this series.
The cover and title were intriguing. The reviews mixed so it was a new author to me and decided to try it. DULL-DULL-DULL. Did I mention Dull.
It barely captures you from the start. There is no excitement to the reading where you want to turn pages and keep going. Easy to put down and forget to pick up.
The characters were likable so that made this sad to me because too often the main characters are so flawed you absolutely can not get involved with them. Doug was likable and you could understand his flaws and relate to them AND THEY DID NOT RULE HIS CHARACTER. Same can be said of Anne and Tom.
but THE OVER USED DESCRIPTION OF THE SETTINGS WAS BORING AS HELL. I felt this was used to fill pages…AND IT DID…PAGE AFTER PAGE OF DESCRIPTIONS that held no interest or use to the story.
The chapters did not have an even flow. In reading sometimes I went back because I felt like chapters were missing because first they have a body and now Ann is talking about going out biking and lunches and dinners and renovating and then we are back to the murder – BUT THE TIME FRAMES SEEM SO FAR OFF.
Too disjointed to be a thriller or thrilling.
I would not read another of this author. My time for reading is important to me and I want something I sink my teeth in and enjoy reading. I felt I knew who the killer was and that I was reading just because I bought it and so I read it.
Quick read, good storyline, likable characters.
Grabs you and doesn’t let go. Looking forward to the next book .
great read.
It was a chiller.
Great serial killer book. Keeps you interested throughout.
