A “sharp and funny romantic tale” (O, the Oprah Magazine) from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers.Ellen O’Farrell is a professional hypnotherapist who works out of the eccentric beachfront home she inherited from her grandparents. It’s a nice life, except for her tumultuous relationship history. She’s stoic about it, but at this point, Ellen … She’s stoic about it, but at this point, Ellen wouldn’t mind a lasting one. When she meets Patrick, she’s optimistic. He’s attractive, single, employed, and best of all, he seems to like her back. Then comes that dreaded moment: He thinks they should have a talk.
Braced for the worst, Ellen is pleasantly surprised. It turns out that Patrick’s ex-girlfriend is stalking him. Ellen thinks, Actually, that’s kind of interesting. She’s dating someone worth stalking. She’s intrigued by the woman’s motives. In fact, she’d even love to meet her.
Ellen doesn’t know it, but she already has.

This is a page-turner, right to the very end! Love this author!
This is a book about romantic relationships and how actions can be looked at from different perspectives. I liked the characters, they all had to deal with some emotional issues in their lives and it was interesting to see how the author resolved the situations that she had put her characters in. I liked the hypnotism aspect, it added an unusual element and I had no previous knowledge of it being used as an aid to help people in therapy. The writing is easy to read and the story is interesting, although the book could have been somewhat shorter. I had lots of fun reading this and would recommend it for people who are looking for a book for their book club.
I have enjoyed each of the Liane Moriarity novels I’ve read, and this was no exception. The shifting points of view in this book are both effective and well done, and the characters are wonderfully and realistically believable. As the plot unfolds, and as the reader is drawn further into the two main character’s lives (one of whom is an almost likeable whack-a-doodle), it becomes nearly impossible to stop reading. Most interesting, and an unexpected bonus, I learned a lot about hypnotherapy as a practice – something I knew absolutely nothing about beforehand, and now something I find wholly intriguing. This is a thoroughly satisfying read!
A good beach read.
This is the story of Ellen O Farrell, a hypnotherapist who has had three unsuccessful relationships. Now a thirty-something, Ellen doubts she’ll find Mr. Right. So when she meets Patrick, she is pleasantly surprised that he likes her, she likes him, and he appears normal. Patrick is widower with one son, who also seems lovely. The catch? Patrick’s ex-girlfriend—Saskia, whom he met after his wife’s death—is stalking him.
I recommend this for any woman who has ever been in love or jilted! Read my full review at: https://cyndiezahner.com/2019/08/20/the-hypnotists-love-story/
enjoyable read. Love this author and the characters she creates. The stalker element is creepy and yet, a kind of comfortable triangle. The tolerance for this behavior does stretch the imagination. Who wants to date a guy and his former girlfriend. Has a happy ending and actually lends itself to some interesting conversations
Favorite author
I liked it. Very interesting and not a book like I’ve read before. Insight into person with visions. Always wondered what people with gifts would do with information they knew and didn’t know what to do with.
Lots of twists and turns
A sweet story.
I’ve liked all her other books I’ve read but just couldn’t hook into this one.
The world of hypnosis, while unconventional, is probably one of the best tools to allow us to create our own calm. Not only does the author portray this, the author cultivates characters seeking assistance to stop smoking, conceive, speak publicly, every day nuances of life. Until a client crosses the line, showing up in the strangest places.
Liane Moriarty is a great story teller! And this book did not disappoint!
Loved it! Quick read.
Entertaining in a sad strange way.
I liked it
Unexpected ending
Awful!
