This book wound up to be so much more than I expected. The narrator, Thomas Bestwick’s accent and narration was so good and kept me hanging on his every word. The story was so different and unusual. The main characters were so likable and the side characters were just as interesting. I immediately went to see if there was any books on the side characters but was so sad there is none at this time. I will be checking on this author and can’t wait to get more in this world.

I will admit, this book sent me for a SPIN. I’m normally able to pin down how a story will go within the first couple of chapters. However, this author did an excellent job on keeping me on my toes. I was thrown for a loop time and again while I traveled down this paranormal rabbit hole. The first thing I loved about this book was Nessa. She’s the main character and has a lot of spunk. One of the reasons I fell in love with her so hard, is because I used to be like her, stubborn, always taking care of myself, never needing to ask for help. So watching her slowly fight with herself before she finally conceded and admitted that this was out of her realm of capability was absolutely adoring to me.
Ailes. Let’s talk about him for a moment. So, when I first met Ailes, I was like, “You’re a cocky ba**ard! I don’t like you!” and I didn’t like him. Not until there was a scene in his apartment where he was working out and there was a KITTEN nibbling at his toes! A KITTEN! Need I say more!? I’m sorry, but seeing a man cuddle with a kitten was absolutely enough to melt my heart. However, I still didn’t give in. Not until he started getting sweet on Nessa. His personality reminded me so much of my husband that I had to laugh! He altered between being an ass to being something so sweet that I couldn’t help but gravitate to it. In the end, he won me over and I was left cheering Nessa on to give in and give him a chance! Which, she did! Eeeeeek!
Brylan was absolutely adorable. The way he kept needling at Ailes and how he and Isla kept ganging up on him to help Nessa was absolutely precious. When he walked in on them, I almost felt bad, but then I was like, “Ha! That’s what you get for needling at him!” However, no matter how much he harassed Ailes, his one true goal was to help his old time friend actually protect someone he loves.
Mike, on the other hand, terrified me. He’s a shadow demon in this book and took a liking to Nessa. I don’t know if anyone has ever dealt with a stalker, but I can say for certain that if you have and reading these types of books upset you, then DO NOT READ. His actual behavior, Demon or not, was that of an actual stalker. It made my heart pound and I found myself both annoyed and relieved whenever someone interrupted my reading while I was reading one of his scenes. Honestly? I’d like to decapitate him. Unfortunately, I have no way of doing so.
When I first met Mike, I’m not going to lie, this was the first twist that threw me for a loop. He called Nessa a mate and I thought to myself, “Okay so this is gonna be a demon taming book and Nessa is gonna take care of him.” Oh boy. I couldn’t have been further from the truth. He was Nessa’s worst nightmare and there was nothing redeemable about him. *SPOILER* Especially when he killed Marlow! I was not okay with that!
If you are looking for a recommendation for a novel with lots of emotions and action-packed, this one is for you. It does contain a dark theme, but I love my books that way!
