It was a great story…
Takes you into the underbelly of the workings of the US and Russia. Lots of excitement and intrigue. We’ll worth taking the time to read.
My favorite book
Tom Clancy’s first and one of his best. Jack Ryan, then a CIA analyst, is introduced and is thrust into the middle a deadly game of submarine warfare; US v. Russia. This spy/military thriller should not be missed.
This is the book that set many, me included, on the trail of Jack Ryan’s many adventures. And what a read! Well worth the time spent reading it.
i didn’t read this: i saw the movie with my dad and my grandfather when my grandmother died. we were just kind of sitting there, but the movie captured us anyway. movies don’t know how to do this – it had to be clancy
I read this book several years ago and find it to still be a good book to reread. I really like the main character and have since read several of the continuing books about him. I am currently reading the most recent novel about he and his son.
Great techno-thriller. Tom Clancey at his best.
A classic page-turner from the cold war.
I had read this years ago, and having recently re-read it, I can honestly say this is one of those very rare instances where the movie is better than the book.
As usual, Clancy gives the reader a suspenseful novel full of intrigue. Enjoyed it tremendously.
A little dated but still a great read.
One of Clancy’s best.
One of the best I’ve ever read. Always felt like I learned so much after reading an early Clancy book.
Back before Tom Clancy was an industry, when he was just beginning to be an author, he did a lot of research about submarines and related matters and wrote a best selling book. Clancy spins a good yarn. As a first book this one has yet to succumb, at least not too much, to building invincible characters who are least believable in their perfection. So his protagonist, Jack Ryan isn’t yet the unbelievable guy for which Clancy’s later novels with Ryan build such a magnificent pedestal; that comes in later books. I find Clancy’s early work to be his best, and this one to be THE best.
First I saw the movie which made me read the book and I was hooked on Tom Clancy. This book is intense. The story is weaved together in such a way that you are breathless at the end of each chapter and have to just keep reading!
as great as when I first read it!
Clancy was one of the best at the techno-thriller. Very detailed. Excellent read.
… very different from the film, much more detailed and is a must-read!
WAY to techy for me. The action was great when it finally came.
