This is an oldy but definitely a goodie. If you like detail, this is for you.
Bell cow of the genre. And worth every moo.
One of Clancy’s best, in my opinion. The movie was great, too. Good suspense in any age of “blinkmanship.”
I nearly gave up because of all the technical details but stuck through to the end of an exciting book.
i must admitm i didn’t read the book. i saw the movie in tital and in parts several times tho. and it is clancy.
I’ve always meant to read this series and now I finally am! Started with this book by Tom Clancy so I could compare it to the movie. Really enjoyed the additional insights and getting to spend more time learning the full depth of the characters of Jack Ryan and his other CIA pals, as well as Ramius. If you enjoyed the movie then don’t miss this book!
Classic action thriller
Such a great book. The first Tom Clancy book I read and it made me have to read the others.
This is was a, “One of a kind “, when it was written and is totally relevant today. I have no doubt that this scenario could take place today and very well might. Let’s all hope that Tom Clancy is not a clairvoyant and just a phenomenal novelist.
I purchased and read this book shortly after it was published in sometime in the early 1980s and purchased the Kindle edition when that became available. I have no idea how many times I’ve reread it over the years. Red October is a riveting story with innumerable memorable characters with a background of top-secret military technology that Clancy somehow described with uncanny accuracy. It and Clancy’s next book, Red Storm Rising, are two of the best “fictions” that I have ever read.
This is the original and the best of modern military and spy books. I’m sure it has inspired dozens of authors to emulate reality with fiction
One of his greatest thriller books. I have read them all.
Tom Clancy’s best books, especially if you like submarine thrillers.
One of my favorite books
This book was so good that I nearly lost a girlfriend over it. I started to read the book on our way to Hawaii… was unwilling to hit the beach until
I finished. I became a Clancey fanatic as a result of this book. His Jack Ryan books were all good but this in my opinion was the best.
Have read it or listen to it at least 6 times. A go to book when all the new book’s are just boring!
One of Clancy’s earliest and still one of his best.
When “Red October” came out, some folks thought Clancy should be charged under the Official Secrets Act for telling tales to the details of which he had no right. Others (me included) thought it amazing that a non-military man could produce a book about submarines and submarine operations in such accurate detail. The Hunt For Red October was the start of a genre that continues to proliferate today, 30+ years later. Don’t miss it!
One of the first books, along with Red Storm Rising, that got me hooked on reading
One of my all-time favorites!
